v. L. OLSON VACUUM CLEANER Filed June 8, 1927 Patented Nov. 20,
UNITED STATES VICTOR L OLSON, OI LEIGH, NEBRASKA.
VACUUM CLEANER.
Application filed June 8, 1927. Serial No. 197,383.
The present invention is directed to improvements in vacuum cleaners. The primary object of the inventlon 1s to provide a device of this character primarily designed for cleaning the upholstery or other parts of an automobile. Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind so constructed that the battery of the automobile is utilized for furnishing current to the motor for actuating the suction fan.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which is comparatively light in order that the same can be conveniently handled when in operation.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on'line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the cover and dust collector housing, showing the manner in which the dust collector is mounted inthe housing.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a casing of conical formation and having a collar 2 upon its minor end in which is fitted a ball bearing 3, there being a closure cap 4 threaded upon said collar.
The major end of the casing is provided with an annular flange 5 to provide a chamber 6, there being a cross bar 7 supported by theflange, the purpose-of which will be later explained.
An electric motor 8 is located in the casing 1 and is mounted rigidly therein upon brackets 9, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, the forwardend of the motor shaft 10 being journaled in the cross bar 7 while the 40 rear end thereof is j ournaled in the bearing 3.
To the outer end of the shaft is fixed a fan 11 which occupies the chamber 6 defined by the The flange 5 terminates in an outwardly 45 flared flange 12 which in turn terminates in an annular wall 13 roviding a housin 14.
A handle 15 is provi ed and has one end xed to the flange 5 and its other end fixed to the wall 13. 7
The wall 13 ofthe housing is formed with an annular flange 16 and upon which seats the rim of the cover 17 said cover being retained'in place by clamps 1 8 of any suitable construction. The cover carries a centrally located nipple 19 and upon which is fitted a suction hose 20, said hose-being equipped with a suction nozzle 20 of any desired form. A fabric dust collecting sack 21 is located in the housing 14 and has its open end provided with a ring 22 which is held upon the flange 16 by spring arms 23 carried by the cover 17.
The motor has leading therefrom a conductor 24:,said conductor being rovided. with a connector 25 which is designed to be-connected to the battery of the automobile in order to energize the motor and rapidly rotate the fan 11. Obviously, when the fan is operating suction will be created in the housing 14; in order to suck dust and dirt collected by the nozzle for lodgment in the dirt collector 21, which being removable, permits the contents thereof to be conveniently emptied when necessary.
Thecasing 1 is provided with a plurality of perforations 26 for permitting the discharge of the spent air.
Having thus described the invention, 1 claim:
A vacuum cleaner of the class, described comprising a conical casing, a bearing mounted in the minor end of the casing, brackets carried by the casing, a motor supported by the brackets, an annular/flange carried by the casing and having a cross bar therein, said annular flange defining a chamber, the motor shaft having one end journaled in the bearing and its other end journaled in the cross bar, a fan fixed to the shaft and rotatable in the chamber, a housing supported by the flange and in communication with the chamber, a flangecarried by the outer end of the housing, a fabric sack located in the housing and having a. ring carried thereby, a
cover for the housing, resilient arms carried by the cover for yieldably engaging the ring for maintaining the sack within the housing when the cover is secured in closed position upon the housing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
