Application ,filed March as, 1928. Serial No. 265,296
- This invention relates to hair curhng or marcelling irons, my principal objectbeing to provide an iron of this general character so constructed that it will fiattenthe individual hairs with-which-it-comes in contact, provided of course that the instrument is properly manipulated. The purpose of this is to enable the hair being treated to be given the flat form in cross section which is common to all naturally curly hair, as distinguished from the round form of non-curly hair. By means of my improved iron, therefore, in connection with the use of certain chemicals,I may impart to previously straight hair an actually permanent wave, and this without the use of the expensive equipment now being necessary, and without the iron having to remain engaged with the hair for a great length of time as is now common with the forming of the present so-called permanent waves.
At the same time my iron may be used for ordinary hair curling purposes just as the ordinary hand curling iron is used.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly efiective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
' Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved iron partly broken out.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the cooperating jaws in a hair clamping position.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the iron comprises a pair of cooperating jaws A and B which are pivoted together at one end as at 1 and provided with'operat-ing handles 2 arranged to be moved together as the aws approach each other.
The jaw A is the male element and consists of a relatively long rigid spindle 3 provided at the end adjacent the handle with an enlarged shoulder 4t andat its outer end with a short enlarged tip 5, which is preferably cut on a taper toward its outer end and in the direction of the jaw B.
Turnably mounted on the spindle between the shoulder and tip and having a neat runfit on the spindle is a sleeve formin f aroller.
'The jaw B is the femalefjaw element and comprises .a substantially semicircular trough 7, the'same length asthe A and adapted to receive the latter therein with a slight clearance along the sides. The trough is provided with. a slot 8 in the bottom the same length and in the same relative location as the roller .6, into which slot the upper periphery of a roller 9 projects slightly, the roller being the same length as the roller 6. The roller 9 is turnably supported by lugs 10 depending from the aw, B at the ends of the roller. The pivotal connection 1 of the jaws is so disposed relative to the rollers that when the handles are closed, the rollers will bear evenly against each other from end to end, so as to impart equal pressure to all hairs passing between the rollers at any point in the length thereof. v
In operation the jaws are spread andthe hair to be curled is disposed so it passes across 7 pull the hair. This operation gives the hairs the properties necessary for sustaining a permanent curl or wave, and if the hair is treated Y at the same time with certain chemicals, such 3 permanency will be assured.
From'the foregoing description it will be readlly seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my 1nvent1on what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hair curling iron including a pair of cooperating jaws between which the hair to be curled is passed, means for moving the aws,
into close relationship with each other, and
means provided with the jaws for clamping engagement with the individual hairs when pressure is exerted against the jaws to tightly close the same.

A ha1r curling iron lncludlng a pan of cooperating jaws between which the hair to be curled is passed, means for moving the jaws into close relationship w'vitli each other, and longitudinally extending rollers mounted in" eanaeatiah 'w'rzit h" the jaws and" between vvhichthe hair passes; the rollersmovin'g into vvheii tlr'fe jatvs are 3". A hair curIing'ii'n' includi g a pair of cooperating awvs' between'which" the hair to be curled 1s passed, means for moving the v I roller and a roller mounted below the trough and projecting throughout its length into the :trough'throug'h slot provided in the bottom thereof; said rollers being parallel to and adjwgthrv i testimony'whe'reof I am m signamre:
