Mylinvention relates to typewriting andlilie machines and more particularly to line spacing mechanism therefor. l
The main object-of the invention, generally stated, is to provide comparatively simple,
yet highly effective, mechanism of the character specified in which provision is made for assuring an engagement of the linespac= ing pawl withthe proper tootlrof the ,line spacing wheel in accordance with the setting of the line'space regulating dev ce, and in which effective means are provided for preventing overthrow of the line spacing wheel and platen.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices set forth-in the following description and particularlyv pointed out in the appended claims.

This provides a simple means by whichthe forcev of the spring exerted on the detent carrier may be adjusted at will. 'One of the side arms of the detent carrier 8 is extended forward of the detent roller, as
shown, to provide a forward extension 15 having an upper contact edge v16 which is inclined to provide a cam-like bearing surface. The means by which the line spacing wheel is turned step by step comprises, in the pres ent instance, a line spacing pawl 17 pivoted atone end on a headed, shouldered pivot screw 18 received at its threaded end in a tapped opening in asupporting car 19. As more clearly shown in Fig. 7, the outer end of the screw 18 extends beyond the car 19 and receives a shouldered nut 20 which acts as a lock nutfor the screw 18. The cylindrical hub 21 of this nutconstitutes an abutment, contact or lockingmember which coacts with the contact edge 16 on the detent carrier 8 when the line spacing pawl 1'? reaches the end of its line spacing movement, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig.4. This locks thedetent carrier and detent against movement away at 23 to receive the stem or" a headed guide screw 24 received at its threaded end in a tapped opening in the bracket. An off-set arm of the slide is connected forward of the ear 19'withan arm 25 of an angular line space lever 26. The connection between the line spacing lever and sllde is best shown 111 Fig. 5, from which it'will be seen that a depending pin 27 in the lever arm 25 enters a short slot 28 in the slide 22. This same pin 27 constitutes meansfor firmly connecting an upstanding post 29 to the lever arm 25. This post, after a slight extent of lost motion of the arm 25 relativelyto the slide 22 (due to the pin and slot connection 27-28) will coact with the edge 30 of the pawl above the pivot 18 thereof, and tends to hold the pawl against accidental upward displacement. The line spacing lever which is made of two connected parts is pivoted on a shouldered pivot screw 31 threaded into the bracket 3 and firmly held in place by a lock nut 32, as shown in Fig. 5. Adepending pin 33 on the lever arm 25 passes through a slot 34 in the bracket and is connected to one end of a'coiled returning spring 35. The opposite end of this spring is connected to an up wardly extending pin 36 carried by a sheet metal housing 37 for the spring. This housing is substantially U-shaped in cross section, and from one of the side arms extends an integral foot piece 38' supported against the bottom Wall of the bracket and held in place by the nut 32. The line spacing lever includes a forwardly projectin arm 39 which terminates in a finger piece ?not shown) by which the lever and the parts controlled thereby may be actuated as the carriage is returned to the right. Such indicating means comprises a flange 54 formed as a part of the arm 51 and l1 ving indices 1, 2 and 3? on the upper side thereof. One or another oi these indices will register with the overlying pin'42 on the line spacing pawl, in accordance with the setting of the arm 51 for line spacing of one, two or three teeth of the wheel as in my prior construction.
By my present invention I have provided improved means for insuring the engagement oi the line spacing pawl with the proper tooth of the wheel at each actuation of the pawl, in accordance with the setting of the hue space regulatlng dev ce 41 for a one, two or threete-eth movement of the wheel, andnot permit a faulty operation by engagement of the wheel which would result in an improper line space. Such means comprises what 1 term a guard member in the nature of an arm 55 pivoted at one end,as at 56 preferably to the line space regulating arm 41. The main body of the arm55 is oil-set from the pivoted port-ion thereof, so as to overlie the contact edge 43 of the regulating device. The lower edge 57 oi" the guard arm gradually slopes towards the member 41 as the rear iiree end of theguard arm is approached. The sin 42 on the line spacing pawl underlies t 1e guard arm and the latter prevents said, pin from moving oil the edge 43 in the rapid operation of the pawl, as will presently appear. It will be seen that the guard member 55 is in the nature of an angular lever, the depending arm 51 that extends 58 of which is connected to one end of a contractile spring 59 whose force 18 directed out of line with the pivot 56 of the member 55.
The lower end of this spring is connected to a suitable point, as to an arm 60 on the con trolling member or arm 51. This spring has a two-fold function. It acts on the guard member 58 and through the latter tends to press the pin down on the contact edge 43 of the line saace regulating member, and as the pin 42 advances along said contact edge it forces the free end oi the guard arm up againstthe force of the splin 59, thus prevent the pin 42 in a rapid operation oi the pawl mom moving off the edge 43 of the regulating member. Consequently the pawl will be accurately guided and caused to enthe proper tooth of choline space wheel irrespective of the position of adjustment of the regulating device 41. By reason of the fact that the guard member 55, 58 is carried by and adjusted with the regulating device 41 in the adjustment of the latter, said guard. member will always hear the same normal relation to the pin 42 and always be positioned to accurately coact therewith.

In a typewrit-ing machine, the combination of a line spacing wheel, a line spacing pawl, an adjustable line space regulating device on which said pawl normally rests and on which it has a sliding movement in its line spacing operation, an overlying arm that holds the pawl against accidental displacement from said re ulating device, a single spring, and means by which said spring tends to hold said regulating device in adjusted position and said arm in effective position.
5.111 a line space mechanism for typewriting or like machines the combination of a line spacing pawl, an adjustable spring-pressed line spacing regulating device on which the pawl normally rests and on which it has a sliding movement in its line spacing opera tion, a separate hand-controlled member coacting with said regulating device to control its adjustment, a pin, a. series of pin-engaging notches between said regulating device and hand controlled member, whereby an adjustment of the hand-controlled member will adjustthe regulating device to difierent line determining positions and the regulating device will act as a spring detent to hold the hand-controlled member against accidental displacement from the line determining position to which it may be adjusted, and an overlying arm that holds the pawl against accidental displacement from said regulating device.

In a line space mechanism for typewriting or like machines, the combination of a line spacing pawl, an adjustable spring-pressed line spacing regulating device on which the pawl normally rests and on which it has a sliding movement in its line spacing operation, a separate hand-controlled member coacting with said regulating device to control its adjustment, a pin, and a series of pin-engaging notches between said regulating device and hand-controlled member, whereby an adjustment of the hand-controlled member will adjust the regulating device to difierent line determining positions and the regulating device will act as a spring detent to hold the hand-controlled member against accidental displacement from the line determining posi .tion to which it may be adjusted, and a guide engaging notches between said regulating device and hand-controlled member, whereby an adjustment of the hand-controlled member will adjust the regulating device to dilierent line determining positions and the regulating device will act as a spring detent to hold the hand-controlled member against accidental displacement from the line determining position to which it may be adjusted, an overlying spring-pressed arm coacting with said pawl and exerting its spring force against the pawl to prevent an accidental displacement thereof from said regulating device, the

Ina line space mechanism for typeyjvrit ing or like machines, the combination of a line spacing wheel, a line spacing pawl, a spring-pressed pivoted line space regulating devicecon which the pawl normally rests and hasa sliding movement in its line spacing operation, the position of the regulating device in turning on its pivot determining the point in the throw of the pawl where it engages the line spacing wheel, a separate hancbcontrolled memberpivoted to turn in an are at an angle to the are through which the pivoted regulat ing device turns and coacting with said regulating device to control its pivotal adjustment, the regulating device coacting with said hand-controlled member to operate as a spring detent to hold it against accidental displacement from the line spacing determining positions to which it may be adjusted, an arm pivoted on said regulating device and overlying said pawl to prevent an accidental displacement thereof from said regulating device, and a single spring connected to said arm and also exerting its force on the regulating device to cause it to act as a spring detent as stated.
9. In a typewriting or like machine, the
combination of a line spacing wheel, a piv-' oted line spacing pawl that extends longi tudinally in one direction'from its pivot, an overlapping pivoted line space regulating arm that extends from its pivot in the opposite direction and on'which the pawl slides combination of line spacing wheel, a line spacing pawl, a pivoted adjustable line space regulating arm on which said pawl normally rests and on which it has a sliding movement in its line spacing operation, a guard member comprising an angular lever pivoted to and adjustable with said regulating arm, one arm of said angular lever coacting with said pawl to prevent an accidental displacement thereof from said regulating arm, and a spring connected to the other arm of said angular lever and also exerting its force to hold the regulating arm in its adjusted position. In a line space mechanism for typewriting or like machines, the combination of a line spacing pawl, an adjustable springpressed line spacing regulating device on which the pawl normally rests and has a sliding movement in its line spacing operation, a separate hand-controlled member coacting With said regulating device to control its adjustment, a pin, and a series of pin-engag ing notches between said regulating device and hand-controlled member, whereby an adjustment of the hand-controlled member will adjust the regulating device to different line determining positions and the regulating device will act as a spring detent to hold the hand controlled member against accidental displacement from the line determining position to which it may be adjusted, a guard member pivoted on said regulating device and coacting with said pawl to prevent an accidental displacement thereof from, the regulating device,and a spring connected to said guard device to hold it in effective position and also exerting its force to maintain an interlocking engagement between said pin and engaging notches.

In a typewriting or like machine, the a combination of a line spacing wheel, a detent roller cooperative with said wheel on the top thereof, a substantially horizontally disposed spring pressed carrier for said detent roller, said carrier being in the nature of a lever pivoted at one end and with a forwardly projecting substantially horizontally disposed armthereof carrying a cam, a line spacing pawl, a slide on which said pawl is mounted, a line spacing lever for moving said slide, and an abutment on said slide brought into en agement with said cam and overl Te ing said arm at the last part of each line spacing ope. etion to hold the carrier and tent roller against upward displacement away from the line spacing wheel and thereby prevent an overthrow thereof.

In a typewriting or'li'ke machine, the combination 'of a linespacing wheel, a detent roller therefor, a lever-like sheet metal carrierfor said detent roller, said carrier being pivoted at one end and substantially U,-shaped in cross-section at its body portion, a contractile spring connected-at one end to said carrier, adjustable means connected to the other end of said spring for varying the force of said spring on said carrier, a rigid extension on the carrier, a line spacing lever, an
engaging member connected with said line spacing lever and moved thereby at the last part of the line spacing operation into contact with the extension on the carrier to hold the detent roller in engagement with the line spacing wheel and thus prevent overthrow thereof.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a line spacing wheel, a detent roller therefor, a lever-like detent roller carrier pivoted at one end and carrying said roller intermediate its ends, the free end portionof said lever-like carrier having an inclined contact face, a line spacing lever, and an engaging member controlled thereby and moved at the last part of the line spacing operation into engagement with said inclined face to hold the carrier and detent roller against releasing movement and thus prevent an overthrow of the line spacing wheel.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a line spacing wheel, a detent roller bearing on the top thereof, a substantially horizontally disposed lever-like detent roller carrier pivoted at'its rear end and carrying said roller intermediate the ends thereof, the free forward end portion of said carrier having an inclined contact face, a line spacing lever, a slide movable fore and aft of the machine by said line spacing lever, a line spacing pawl carried by said slide, and an engaging member carried by said slide and cooperative at the last part of theline spacing operation with said inclined face to hold the carrier and detent roller against releasing movement and thus prevent an overthrow of the line spacing wheel.
