Be it known that LJAMEs S. HAGERTY, of Baltimore, in the county of .Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Lamps, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of lamps, and is particularly designed for street-lamps, its object being to furnish a simple and etlective support for the glass shade orA globe of such lamps, and to furnish a cheap and efficient means of attaching and securing the said glass shade or globe to its seat in such manner that it may be readily applied and detached, and also to permit ready and convenient access to the burners, i'or the purpose of attaching and removing the same when required, or for cleaning or repairing them when out of order.

My invention consists, rst, in a curved arm or standard, provided with a collar or sleeve at its lower-end, adapted to be set over and be secured upon the upper end of a lamp-post or other standard, provided with an annular sup'- port for the lower end of the glass shade or globe, which may be rigidly attached to said standard or pivoted thereto, and having at its upper end a hinged or pivoted arm, carrying or supporting the lamp top or cover at its end, which is adapted to set upon the upper edge of the glass shade or globe, and hold it in place, and which can be readily elevated or thrown out of place for inserting or removing the said glass shade or globe, as fully hereinafter set forth and shown; second, in combination with the curved standard of a curved arm, hinged or pivoted thereto, and provided with a flat horizontal bearing-surface at the lower end, adapted to set against a similar bearing-surface in the bottom of the slot in the curved standard, and with projections eX- tendiug to the rear of said arm to limit its motion, as more fullywhereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of the same.

The letter Arepresents a bent arm or standard, having formed on its lower end, or attached thereto by any suitable means, a sleeve Y secured upon the upper endet' the: lamp post or standard B.l Said arm is of such shape as to extend upward-at one sideof the glass globe or shade, which is `represented by the'letter'C, and, for the sake of neatness and beauty, is generally made to conform as nearly as possible to the outline of said glass shade or globe. D represents an annular support for said glass shade or globe, with an annular recess, d, on its upper side, forming a seat for the same. Said support may be rigidly attached to or formed on the standard or arm A, but I pre-- fer to provide it with a slotted shank or arm, d', and pivot or hinge it to said standard, the standard being provided with stops all and a2, to limit its motion, so as to secure the support in a horizontal position when the glass shade or globe is in place, and allow it to be turned upward out of the way of the burner, so as to allow the same to be readily and conveniently reached when desired. The upper end of the bent standard is slotted for the reception of one end of a curved arm, E,which extends up over the center of the glass shade or globe, and to the upper end of which the cap or cover F of the lamp is secured in any convenient manner. Said cover is made of any suitable material, generally of metah'however, and is provided with an annular recess or downwardly-projectly rim on its lower edge, which sits over the upper edge of thelglass shade or globe when said vcap or cover is in place, and securelyT holds said glass shade or globe to its seat. The lower end of the standard or arm E, where it is pivoted to the standard A, is formed with a flat horizontal bearing-surface, c, which sets against a similar bearing-surface at the bottom of the slot in the standard A, and holds the said arm E in such position as to support the cap or cover horizontally upon the glass shade or globe when down, and the extreme lower end of said arm E is extended horizontally to the rear of the arm A, or at right angles thereto, forming a stop, which prevents the arm from being thrown too far back, in order to keep lhe cap or cover always in a convenient position, and prevent it from being broken or injured.

The method of applying the glass globe or shade will be readily understood from the fore-1 or collar, a, which is adapted to set over and be lgoing description. The annular support being in a horizontalposition, the lower edge4 of the; glass shade or globe is set in the-recess `t-liereiinand the cap brought down over its upper edge so as to hold it securely in place.

To remove said glass shade or globeit is only necessary to throw back the cap or cover and lift it oif, and,whileoi', the burner may be readily reached for cleaning, repairs, or any other purpose, by elevating the annular support, so as to throw it ont of the way.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An improved support for a lamp shade or globe, consisting of a curved arm or standard, the annular seat D, and the cap or cover iF, secured tothe 'bent arm E, hinged or pivoted to the upper end of the standard A, and adapted to set over `and secure the globe or nshade to itsseat, substantially as described.
