Patented Oct. I9, 1875.

WITNESSES N. PETERS, F'HoTo-AUTHOGHAPMER. WASHINGYON, D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM YOUNG, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,952, dated October 19, 1875; application filed August 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM YOUNG, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State Ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Pump, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my im proved pump. Fig. 2-is a top view, and Fig. 3 is a section on line x.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding` parts.
I construct the'pumpbarrel Ain suitable sizes and with the requisite threads B, to be i coupled onto a galvanized or vulcanized gaspipe C by a union or reducer, D, as may be preferred, and to have a strainer, E, coupled by the same means. I also construct the spout F to attach by a T, Gr, with which I make a joint in the gas-pipe for that purpose at the place where the spout is required; and I, also construct the handle-bracket H and the base-plate I, each with a socket, J, adapted in size to tit on thepipe and be fastened' by a set-screw, K, and in the case ofthe base-plate socket I have it extended below the plate to conceal it and the set-screw, by which it is fastened. For a force-pump I also provide a cap, L, for the top with a stuffing-box, M. These fillings will be made of any suitable material-for instance, the pump-barrel and spout and the packing-cup may be made of brass, and the handle-bracket and base-plate may be ot' iron. N is the waste-valve. It is fitted in a seat-piece, O, screwed into a hole in the side ot' the pipe, heilig arranged to close by the pressure ot' the water when the pump is working, and provided with a spring, P, having power to open it against the water remaining in the pump-tube at'ter the pump stops, to allow the water to run ont, so that the pump will not freeze up in cold weather. The spring P is kept in place by a nut, R, which is perforated to allow the waste-water to run out. Q is the rubber hand-protector stretched on the handle between collars. The tube C may be jacketed with wood S to protect it from freezing.
Havingv thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The baseplate I, connected to the tube G, and made adjustable by the socket J and set-screw K, and the said socket being projected below the plate, substantially as specified.
2. The waste-valve N, seat-piece O, perforated nut R, and spring P, combined with the .v
tube C, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM YOUNG. Witnesses:
