SELF-CLGSING BAG.

My present invention relates to bags which, while particularly adapted for use as an inner receptacle for iron fillings and chemicals used in chemical heat bags, is also capable of a much wider and more general use, such as a package for ganular or comminuted material of various kinds suitable for mailing, or other shipment, or for general commercial purposes.

A primary object of the invention is the provision of bag of this character which is self-closing and is: provided with a convenient filling opening which automatically closes after the bag is filled, preventing escape of the contents without requiring any manipulation or adjustment, or a separate closure of any kind.

Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connect-ion with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.

Referring to the drawings,

Figure 1 is an elevational view of a selfclosing bag in which my invention is embodied; and

Fig. 2 is a partial section, taken substantially upon the section line 22 of Fig, 1.

In said drawings, I have shown, for illustrative purposes only, av preferred. form of my invention, in which the reference character 11 indicates a fabric body, which 1s seamed about three edges, as indicated at 12, and has a filling opening at one corner thereof. Said opening is provided by folding inwardly corner flaps 18 of the opposite sides of tee fabric body, the material being thereafter stitched along lines 14 and 15 to provide a passageway of funnel shape through which the materials may be conveniently directed in filling the bag. The seams 12 are continued through the. folded corners, as shown. at 16, to bind the edges of the opening so that a definitely defined funnel is formed out of the material of the bag itself. The inner tip portions 17 of the folded corners 13 overlie each other and after the material has been inserted, they tend to close together and cling to each. other so that even though the bag be inverted, or handled freely under various conditions of use, the material will not spill out, unless said tips 17 are separated from the outside.

In this manner, an efficient self-closing bag 7 operations required are the cutting of the fabric and the seaming in the manner shown in the drawing, and the bag has the advantagein service of being easily filled and requiring no attention whatever for closing.

It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it willbe apparent that various changes may he made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages. the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof; f

I claim:

A self closing bag comprising a sheet of fabric folded upon itself and secured at its side and top edges, one corner of the l 1' structure being left free and folded inwardly to present two contiguous fabric walls terminating in loosely lying pointed flap portions, and two converging lines of stitohin securing said inturnc-d corner walls together to form a funnel shaped filling opening, said lines of stitching terminating short of said.

loosely lying flap portions, whereby when the bag is filled said flap portions tend to cling to one another and obstruct the filling aperture to materially aid in preventing the escape of the contents of the bag.
