This invention relates to vibrators, and more particularly to means for attaching the vibrator or vibrator casing to a device which is to be operated upon by the vibrator, such as a flask, a casting, core box or the like used in heres to the walls of the articles and must be removed, usually by pounding on the walls of these articles, or by a scraping operation. As
the boxes or flasks are quite often damaged in this manner, and as it is more or less of a tedious operation, it has been found to be much more expedient to use vibrators operated by compressed air or the like in such a manner that the vibrators are caused to act upon the flask and shake out or dislodge the material therefrom.
In such operations, it is, of course, necessary to attach the vibrator to the flask and remove it therefrom as soon as the operation is completed, so that the vibrator may be successively used upon a number of flasks. At the same time the connection between the vibrator and flask should be such that the vibrations will be .transmitted to the walls of the flask without serious loss of energy or power therebetween,
that is, the connection should be such that,
while the vibrator may be easily and readily attached to and removed from the flask, the latter will be properly acted upon by the vibrator so that it will be shaken out in quick time. It is, therefore, quite advantageous to provide the vibrator with some sort of attaching means by which such a connection may be made.
One object of this invention is the provision of a jaw member for vibrators such that the latter may be readily attached to and detached from a flask or the like, and atthe same time will bear firmly against the flask so that the vibrations will be properly transmitted thereto.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a jaw or attached member for vibraprovision of a jaw member which may be secured to or formed integrally with the vibrator head, the jaw member being of such shape that it will readily fit over the walls of flasks of various sizes and shapes to properly transmit the vibrations thereto.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an arrangement wherein the weight of the vibrator may be utilized to urge the arms of the jaw or other flask engaging element into, contact with the walls of the flask.
To these and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In Fig. l of the drawings, I have shown in a somewhat conventional manner a foundry flask 10 supported by the chains 11 and 12 which may depend from a crane hook or the like (not shown) The side walls of the flask in this instance are channel shaped in section, and, as shown in Fig. 2, comprise a web or body portion 13 and upper and lower flanges 14 and 15.
The vibrator structure comprises a body or' casing 16 provided with a compressed air inlet 17. The interior of this casing is hollow and is usually of a cylindrical shape, as shown in my prior Patent No. 1,336,921, and it is contemplated that a piston or ram be used similar to the one shown in the patent referred to.
In the particular form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, the opposite ends of the vibrator casing are closed by the heads 18 and 19 which may be held in position by the bolts 20 Which pass through the projecting edges of the heads and securely clamp them in position upon the casing 16. A bail or the like 21 may be secured to certain of the bolts 20, the bail being provided with an eye 22 so that the vibrator itself, if desired,
t ially C shaped in form having a jaw or opening of corresponding shape to receive the wall of the flask.
The jaw comprises an upper substantially horizontal portion 26, a front vertically extending side 27, a rear wall 28, and a lower forwardly projecting portion 29. When 1n position upon the wall of a flask, the upper portion 26 will be substantially horizontally disposed and will be of sufficient length to accommodate the flange 14 upon the upper wall of the flask. That is, it is contemplated that this part of the jaw be made of a length equal to or greater than any flange commonly used upon the flask wall. Likewise, in order that the'vibrator may be readily placed upon such a flanged flask, it is desirable that the distance between the extreme end of the lower C-shaped part of the jaw and the end 31 of the front wall 27 be at least equal to the length of the upper wall 26. When these d1- mensions are followed any flange will readily be received in the jaw opening which is not too .long to be accommodated between the front and rear members 27 and 28 of the jaw 25. As shown in Fig. 2, when the vibrator has beenplaced upon the flask, itJVill assume a osition wherein the parts of the jaw will be flrmly lodged and bound against the parts of the flask by the weight of the vibrator which is held in a substantially horizontal position. extending outwardly from the wall of the flask, the center of gravity of the vibrator and jaw being spaced outwardly from the wall, whereby considerable leverage is exerted on the arms of the jaw'engaging the flask' so that the vibrations will be roperly transmitted to the latter member. .T e lower arm 29 will bear directly against the side or web portion of the flask wall and the flange 14 will assume a position across the angle between the sides 26 and 27 of the jaw.
Likewise, as shown in Fig. 2, the'sanie jaw will readily be accommodated-to the walls of flasks which have a flange of any width less than the length of the part 26 or to flask walls which are provided with no flange at all.
, This is particularly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings where the vibrator is shown positioned upon a flask, the wall of which has a. very short flange. It will be seen that the vibrator is in 'substantiallythe same position in Fig. 2 as in Fig. 2, and for this reason a vibrator provided with a jaw member of this type has universal application to the side walls of foundry flasks or kindred devices without regard to the exact cross-sectional shape of these walls, so long as the wall of the flask may be received between the points 30 and 31.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, I have shown a vibrator casing 35,- havingheads 36 and 37 secured thereto, these heads being provided with projecting lugs 38 and 39. The Vibrator casing 35 is mounted within a housing 40 having a body portion 41, side shoulders 42 and 43, and legs 44 and 45 designed to lie against the lugs 38 and 39 and be secured thereto. The side shoulders 42 and 43 are adapted to closely embrace the heads 36 and 37 of the vibrator housing so that a firm contact is made therebetween. A jaw member 46 is.
secured in this instance to the housing 40', this jaw member preferably being of the same shape as the member 25 described in connection with Figs. 1 to 3 of thedrawings. It will be apparent, therefore, that this jaw member may either be directly formed upon or secured to one of the vibrator heads, or may be securedto the housing within which the vibrator is adapted to be mounted. When, .as-shown in Fig. 4, the jaw member is provided upon the housing, it will be apparent that, as the vibrator may be readily attached to and detached from the housing, the former may be used if desired. with a number of housings having differently shaped j aw members which may be adapted for different clames of Work. These housings may be provided with bails 47 to assist in the handling of the device.
While I have described and shown some preferred embodiments of my invention, it
to all the details shown, but is capable of modification and variation within the spirit of the invention and within thejscope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: 1. A vibrator comprising a casing and a aw member rigidly secured thereto, said jaw member being provided with an opening adapted to receive a partof a member to be vibrated and to support the vibrator thereon. 2. 8. A vibrator casing having secured thereto an open mouthed aw member comprising an upper wall with front and rear parallel depending sides, the opening of said jaw member being not less than the length of the upper wall.
9. A vibrator comprising a casing having an open mouthed jaw member secured thereto, and designed to receive therewithin the side wall of a foundry flask or the like, said jaw member having an upper wall designed to rest against the top portion of the side wall of the flask, and a depending leg disposed at substantially right angles to said wall adapted to be positioned within the flask adjacent the inner surface of the side wall thereof.
10. A jaw member for vibrators having an upper wall and front and rear dependin sides, and'a member on one of said sides an projecting toward but terminating short of the other side, and means for securing said jaw member to a vibrator casing.
11. A jaw member for vibrators or the like having an upper wall and front and rear de' pending sides, one of which is longer than the .member to a vibrator casing.
12. A jaw member for vibrators or the like, having an upper. wall designed to rest atthe upper portion of a member to be vlbrated, and

means attached to the casing for engaging a part to be vibrated and supporting said vibrator, comprising means for engaging an inner surface of sald'part, and ineans for engaging an outer surface of said part, both of said means being adapted to be urged into 4 contact with the part by the weight of said vibrator.
21. In a vibrator, a casing, a ram mount: ed in said casing for vibratory movement,
means for transmitting vibrations to a part to be vibrated, comprising means for pivotally supporting the vibrator on the part, and means for engaging a wall of said art to limit the movement of the vibrator :1 out its. pivotal support, saidwall engaging means being adapted to be urged into contact with said wall by the weight of the vibrator.
22. In a vibrator, a casing, a ram.m0unted in said casing for vibratory movement, and means for supporting said vibrator in a sub stantially horizontal position on and inalignment with the part to bevibrated, said means comprising an arm adapted to engage an inner wall of the part, an arm adapted to engage an outer Wall of the part, and means adapted to rest on an upper surface of the part, said last named means being spaced outwardly from the extended path of said ram at least as far as the upper edge of said casing.
23. In a vibrator, a casing, a ram mounted in the casing for vibratory movement, and means attached to the casing for embracing a part to be vibrated and supporting the vibrator thereon, said vibrator when so supported extending outwardly from the part in a position inclined slightly below the horizontal, whereby said embracing means may be urged into contact with the part by the weight of the vibrator.
