This invention has for its object a particularly light pressing element for pressing machines, as the head or the buck of a pressing machine and particularly a sheet metal head or buck and means for distributing the heat throughout the ironing face of the head or the buck or both.
The'invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.

The pressing elements as the head and buck of laundry and garment pressing machines have heretofore been made of cast iron which distributes the heat substantially equally.

Also, such cast iron bucks or heads are comparatively heavy and when one of them is movable it requires heavy counterweights. The counterweights as well as the heavy heads necessarily cause the machlne to operate slowly.
This invention relates to a hght movable pressing element or head so that the weight of the head and also that of the counterweights or springs is reducedand the machine has a quick snappy action in Opemng and closing rather than a slow cumbersome action.
I have here shown my invention as embodied in a machine in which the upper pressing element or head is movable toward and from the lower element or buck and'is carried at the front end of the yokeor lever having a counterbalancing weight at its rear end.

Thus, the buck 1 is formed with a heating chamber, directly above the wall 9. Means is provided for distributing a heating medium over .the inner face of the wall 9 so that the outer or pressing face 10 will be evenly heated.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the walls of this heating chamber opposite the wall 9 is formed with a plurality of passages for the heating medium, these passages being distributed throughout the length and breadth of the heating chamber, and automatic means is provided for controlling the opening and closing of the passages. This automatic means comprises normally-open, thermostatically-operated valves controlled 90 by the heat within the heating chamber above the wall 9. p
As here illustrated, the interior of the buck 1 is divided by a partition 11 into upperand lower chambers 12 and 13 and this partition is formed with a plurality of passages 14 therethrough. Also, the upper chamber 12 is provided with an inlet 15 for a heating medium as air or steam and the lower cham- "her 13 with an outlet 16. The inlet 15 opens through the top of the chamber 12 centrally thereof and a deflector 17 is located within the chamber 12 opposite the inlet 15.
-The thermostatically operated valves for controlling the passages 14 are here shown as disk shaped heads 18 which are connected by a stem 19 to a thermoresponsive element that is, a thermostatic elemenet here shown as a' dished bimetallic disk 20. When the disk 20 becomes heated, it warps or distorts 1 in one direction to close the corresponding passage 14.
The heating medium preferably air is circulated through the chambers by means of a pump 21 mounted on the yoke lever 5 and having its inlet pipe 22 connected to the outlet 16 of'the chamber and having its outlet 23 connected to the inlet 15 of the chamber 12. The air is heated while being circulated, and as here shown it is heated .in the outlet pipe 23 of the pump by an electrically heated heat generator 24:. Any other suitable form of heating means may however be provided. In order that the sheet metal body may retain the heat, it is lined or partly lined with a heat retaining layer of asbestos material 25.
In operation, assuming that the head is cold, all of the Valves 18 will be open. Upon the starting of the pump 21 the air passes through the pipe 23 into the chamber 12, it being heated while so passing through the pipe 23. From the chamber 12, it passes through the openpassages 14 throughout the cham ber 13. however, on account of the nature or sheet metal, the wall 9 thereof will be hotter in some spots than in others. The valves located in the hotter portions of the chamber will expand and closethe corresponding passages 11 so that the most of the heating medium will pass to the cooler portions until the heat is evenlydistributed throughout the wall 9;
This invention is particularly advan tageous in that it allows a light sheet metal buck to be used instead of the heavy cast iron heads requiring large counterweights and heavy supports which sheet metal buck can be readily and ironing face.
What I claim is 1. A hollow pressing element for pressing machines having a heating chamber, one wall of which is'formed with a pressing face, means for circulating a heating medium throughout the heating chamber and thermostatically controlled valve'means within the chamber fordistributing the heating medium over the wall of the chamber formed with the pressing face. 2. A pressing machine element having an internal chamber and means for circulatin .a heatin medium through the chamber and a plura 'ty of thermostatically .0 rated valves in said circulating system tributing the heating medium throu hout the chamber, the valves being opera le indeor diswall on one side thereof provided with a pressing face, another wall of said'chamber being provided with a plurality of inlets for a heating medium, means for circulating the heating medium through the saidinlets and the chamber, and thermostatically controlled valves operable independently of each other for controlling the inlets. v
5. A pressing machine element comprising a hollow body enclosing a chamber having a wall on one side thereof provided with a pressing face, another wall of said chamber eing provided with a plurality of inlets for a heating medium, means for circulating the heating medium through the said inlets and the chamber, and thermostatically controlled valves operable independentl of each other for controlling the inlets, the t ermostatic elements of the valves bein located in contact with the wall formed wit the pressing face.

A pressing machine elementcomprising a hollow body enclosing a chamber having a a wall on one side thereof provided with a pressing face, the opposite wall of said chamher being provided vwith a plurality of. inlets for a heating medium, means for circulatin a heating medium through the said inlets an the chamber, and thermostaticall controlled valves operable independently 0 each other for controlling the inlets, said valves having their thermostatic elements in contact with the wall provided with the pressing face. quickly heated throughout its and thermostatically operated valves for controlling the flow of heating medium throu h said passages, the valves being operable in ependently of each other, the valves having theirthermostatic elements located adjacent the wall of the body rovided with the pressing face whereby said by the heat conducted from the portions of said wall in the localities of the thermostatic elements of said valves.

A) pressing machine element compriselements are controlled ing a hollow body having a wall on one side 1 thereof provided with an outer pressin face, a partition within the body dividing it into two chambers, said partition extendin in the same (general direction as the wall w ich is provi ed with the pressing face, saidpartition being formed with a lurality bf passages therethrough distribu over the-area of said partition and normally closed thermostatically operated valves for controlling the flow of a heating medium through said passages and means for passing said heating medium through said chambers and said passages.
9. A pressing machine element comprising a hollow body for receiving a heating medium, the wall on one side of the hollow body having a pressing face, a partition dividing the interior of the body into compartments, the partition extending in the same general direction as said wall and being formed with a plurality of passages therethrough distributed over the area of the partition and thermostatically operated means for controlling the flow of a heated medium through said passages, an inlet for the heating medium open ing into one chamber, and. an outlet leading from the other chamber.
10. A pressing machine element comprising a hollow body one wall of which is pro vided with a pressing face, the hollow body having a heating chamber and said wall forming one side of the heating chamber and another wall of the heating chamber being formed with a plurality of passages distributed throughout the length and breadth of the heating chamber and thermostatically operated valves for controlling the flow of a heating medium through said passages.
11. A pressing element for pressing machines comprising a hollow metal body and thermostatic means within the body for distributing a heated medium throughout the pressing face of the body. 7
