UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
JOHN M YOUNG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR '.'lO 'AMERICAN CAN COM- PANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CONTAINER.
IApplication led May 22,
This invention relates in general to side tearing strip key-opening cans, and has for a. principal object the provision of means for guiding a key in the strip removing action.
E VJA'further and principal object of my invention is the provision of a can having van internal band adapted to extend up and form a neck upon which may be engaged the coverA and edge flange after the tearing strip has l@ been removed after the manner of a slip cover in which the fastening means between theA band and the body may cooperate with the cover' seam to guide a key in its opening action.
In side tearingstrip key-opening cans it is particularly desirable that the key be started in its tearing action accurately in order that the tearing on the score lines may be straight and evenly distributed. My lnvention con- 2@ templates the insurance that this tearing will be accurate, easy and complete and to this end provision is made for the guiding of the key 1n its' initial action and for the coninement of the lines of tear to the encircling score 25 lines setting olf the tearing strip.
Numerous other objects andadvantages of .the invention will be apparent as it is etter understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accomanying drawin s, discloses a preferred emodiment thereo l n the drawings,
`Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can embodying my' present invention;
ig.` 2 is an enlarged partial sectlon through a side of the same and showing the action' of the key in the initial tearing oper- .atiom Figi. 3 is a side elevation of a band; and
Fig. 4 is a section ltaken substantially on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3 and showing the connection between the band ends.
a The canshown on the vdrawing as a preferred embodiment of my present invention 45 comprises a body 11 having a bottom seamed toit at 12and a top or cover 13 seamed to the body at 14. This cover seam in the present instance is the ordinaryI double seam welllknown in the art and usually employed inv process cans. v Below the top a .pair of parallel encircling score lines 15 are provided and. between these are arranged diagonal score lines 16 for directing the lines of tear back to the score lines 15 should there be a. tendlines 15.

ency to tear inwardly in the removal of the strip 17, i. e. the material between the score -A band 18 is arranged within the body and extends about the entire inner circumference of the can and from a point well below the lowermost score line 15 to closely adjacent the cover 13. This band has its ends formed with a lock seam 19 as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, this seam being located behind the outer face of the band in its nished form. The band is insertedv in the body and the body and band are pressed out at 21 just above the lower band edge. This forms an outwardly extending rim or rib of large diameter beneath the band. The outward extension of the can body at 21 resulting is given a dimension substantially that of the outer circumference of the seam 14. Reference character 22 indicates a key adapted to engage a tongue 23 forme on the can body 'and extending beyond the side seam 24 in any usual or preferred manner. It is, of course, intended that the ke shall engage the tongue and then be rotat yto cause the tongue to wind upon the key and severance progressively occur along the lines 15 so that the strip 17 is finally removed and the cover, with the resulting ange part 25, may be removed and used as a slip cover upon the upper end of the band, the band also serving to confine the contents during and after the removal of the strip. Since the outer diameter of the enlarged portion 21 of the body andA the outer diameter of the seam are the same, these parts are adapted to form bearings for the key in the initial turning action and keep the key accurate position at the starting of 'and during the tearing action with resultant even the diagonal score linesservingto return the lines of tear to the score lines 15 should departure tend to occur at a later point in the removal of the strip. If the beadat 21 were small relative to the seam 14 the key would beinclin/ed and would wind up the top edge of the tearing strip 17 fasterthan the bottom edge and a transverse strain put on the strip, which would sometimes tear across a diagonal score line 16V and the object of the improvement would be frustrated. i
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understoodfrom the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form and construction and arrangement of the parts without departing.
from the spirit and scope of the invention or cover, said can having a bead beneath said score lines forming with the rconnection between the cover and body a circumferential track adapted to guide' a key employed for removing the strip, and an internal band secured within said body and extending above said score lines to provide a means for receiv-A ing the torn-away top of the can, said band having its ends joined in a lock seam'and being tightly secured within the can body, the
outward projections of the cover seam and of the bead relative to the can wall being of the same extent so that the key is maintamed operation. i
2. A can, comprising a body having a, cover seamed thereto and provided beneath said cover with a strip set off by encircling score' lines adapted to be torn away to remove the cover, saidv can having a bead beneath sald score lines forming wlth the connection'beltween the cover and body a circumferential track adapted to guide a key employed for removing the strip, and an internal band secured within said body and extending above.
said score lines to provide a means for receiving' the torn-away top of the can, said band having its ends joined in a lock seam and having the lower edge, thereof held in4 the bead of the can body with the lower end of said band formed and embraced in said bead, the outward projections -of the cover seam and of the bead relative to the can wall being of the same extent so that the ke is maintained at right angles to the strip u ing the tearing operation.
