Description

A1;.v. SIHEFFIELD. Method of Uni.ting t`he Soles and Uppers of Bouts `and Shoes. No.l68,420.
Patented Oct. 5,1875
4 maman i N. PETERS. PMoTo-LITDGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
GEORGE Y. SHEFFIELD, OF NEWYORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND MARTIN BENNETT, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF UNITING THE SOLES AND UPPERS OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 68,420, dated October 5, 1875 application filed June 5, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE V. SHEEFIELD, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Uniting the Soles and Uppers of Boots and Shoes, of'which the following is a specifica tion:
The invent-ion will rst be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure lis a section of a piece of work and a side elevation of a needle and a piece of the wire used for inserting the thread, showing the manner of introducing the wire when making the hole, and Fig. 2 is a section showing the complete stitch and method of making it.
Similarletters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A tine wire, A, is to beheld over the work by any approved means, so that the needle B,
' having a notch in the point connecting grooves C (dotted) in opposite sides, will come down on and force it through the work when it makes the hole. The wire remains when the needle goes back, and a looper of any kind loops the thread through the wire loop D, as represented at E, after which the wire loop is drawn back by nippers or other means, taking hold of both members of it above the work,
drawing the thread loop through, and thus qnadrupling the thread in the hole, and so wedging or binding it that the waxmsticks it ,tasty-making a strong d'diiable fastening.
The wire will be drawn out of the 10op.o` thread in any way, being, if necessary, cut and a piece thrown away. The wire may be drawn up to pull the thread through the work by the take-np of a sewing-machine, while the end is held by nippers, or at the same time partly drawn by the nippers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improvement in the art of uniting the soles and uppers of boots and shoes, consisting in passing a doubled Wire through the same, inserting a thread through the loop of the wire on the under side of the sole, and drawing the thread through the leather by means of said wire, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
GEORGE V. SHEFFIELD.
