My invention relates to railway rolling stock and consists in an improved bed structure particularly adapted for electric locomotives in which a motor mounted on the bed. is operatively connected to the driving wheels. l
Many of the features of my invention may be utilized in a locomotive in which the motor is energized from a power line paralleling the track and I contemplate the exclusive use of these features in such a locomotive. However, my invention Ais most fully developed when embodied ina locomotive which generates its own current by means of an internal combustion engine of any familiar type, such as the Diesel engine.
One of the objects of my invention is to simplify and improve the bed structure by making the same of one piece, preferably of a single casting.
Other objects of my invention are to provide such a bed with integral elements forining bearings for the rotoi of the motor and for the rotating elen'ients which connect the l 'motor with the driving wheels.
Another object of my invention is to provide guards for these various rotating part-s made integral with the locomotive bed.
` Another object of my invention is to form a port-ion of the motor frame integrally with the locomotive bed.
Similar objects of my invention are to form portions` of the generator frame or housing integral with the bed and to form portions of the prime mover, such as an in ternal combustion engine, integral with the bed.

The body of the bed comprises a pair of longitudinal members 1. illustrated as being of box cross section although other suitable forms may be used instead. The members are located on each side of the center line of the locomotive and equidistant therefrom and constitute the main supporting structure for the engine E, the generator G, and the motor M. Portions of members 1 project downwardly to form pedestals 2 for the locomotive drivers 8. A third longitudinal member 4 parallels members 1 and is spaced far enough from one of them to accommodate the driver wheels 3 between them. Member 4 is connected to the adjacent member 1 at intervals by transverse members 5 and intermediate these members 5, Imember 4 is provided with integral bearing elements 6 for the journals 8 of the gears 7. The entire bearing for the gear journal 8 may be formed integrally as indicated at 6 or the lower half of the bearing may consist of a. removable cap. YThe gears 7 are flexibly connected to the driving wheels 3 by any suit.- able link mechanismsuch as illustrated in Figure 6. In this arrangement the seg-v ments S are mounted on the drivinggear 7 at a and links Z are connected to the segments at and to the driving wheel 3 at c, the gear 7 being perforated to permit substantial vertical movement of wheel 3 relative to the gear.
Abreast of motor M, member 4 extends upwardly to form a bearing element 9 for the journal 10 of the driving pinion 11 which is mounted on the rotor shaft 12 of the motor. As in the bearings for the driving gears 7. the entire bearing for the drivingpinion 1l may be formedintegrally with member 4 or the upper portion of the bearing may consist. of a removable cap.

Preferably, the entirebearing for the idler journals is formed integrally by member 4 but these bearings, like the other bearings referred to, may be formed in two parts if desired.
Preferably cach of the bearing elements G, f) and 13 are partially surrounded by integral flanged sections 15, 1G and 17, respectively, the same forming an outside guard for the gear and the pinion mounted on the bearings.
In Figure 5 I illustrate lthe integral structure of the motor frame 18 and the longitudinal members 1 of the' bed. By asting the parts it is possible to obtain this construction which avoids the tinishing and labor which would be necessary to assemble these parts if they were made separately, and also makes it possible to reinforce each of the members b v the other. thereby eliminating ther necessity of providing other reinforcing elements` and reducing the quantity of metal required for a given strength of bed and motor frame. The motor frame 18 serves as a traneverse brace for the sills 1 and the latter reinforce and rigidly position the motor frame. It is desirable to have the upper portion 18a of the motor frame removable and this part of the frame is made separately and the portion integral with the bed provided with finished pads 51 for attaching the ren'iovable part.
Similar details are embodied in the construction of the generator frame in which the lower portion 19 is formed integrally with the bed member 1, and forms a transverse brace between tliem, and also extends above them and includes integral bearings Q() for the generator .shaft Q1. The upper ends of the generator frame portion 19 are provided with the finished bosses 9:2 for mounting the upper portion Q3 ofthe generator frame or housing. 'lhe generator frame portion 1S) is provided with suitable slots 19 which permit the ready insertion of windin'gs for an alternating current generator. This ligure also illustrates the integral brackets 54 extending outwardly from the sills and engine crank ease and adapted to support the locomotive superstructure. Uniting these brackets with the crank case and sills reinforces the engine and bed transversely and forms the inner ends of the brackets with deep sections to withstand the bracket loads.
At each end of the bed, integral end sills 3Q connect the ends of members 1 and 4 and formed integrally with the end sills and member 4 are the draft sills 33 and formed integrally with sills 1 are transverse members 34 mounted upon lead or trailing trucks 35 which are pivotally connected to the locomotiver bed at 36.
Figure S illustrates a modified form of my invention in which each driving wheel 3T is driven by an individual motor 38, the upper portion 39 of each of the bearings for the driving gears 40 and the lower portion 4l of each of the bearings for the driving pinions 42 being formed integrally with the longitudinalside .member 43 of the bed, the sill 44 having integral pedestal jaws 45 formed thereon. In this construction the bearings for the driving gears and pinions are completed by the removable caps 46 and 47 respectively. In this construction also the bed casting includes the lower portions 48 of the motor frames, but the upper faces of these frames are finished with suitable pads 49 on which may be mounted the upper portions 50 ofthe motor frames or housings.
This type of construction is particularly adapted for use in electric locomotives receiving current from feed wires or rails rather than locomotives which generate their own elet-trie current. t
In all forms of my construction describe( the locomotive and various parts ot the driving mechanism are Vformed integrally whereby play between cooperating elements iS eliminated which is a marked advantage over an assembly of units in which the assembled elements frequently become loose and permit relative movement of the parts.- The integral construction enables me to provide strong sections at points where the depth or width otl the parts is reduced because of the associated structure such as at the pedestal recesses for the driving wheel journals and atl points where the necessity of clearing the wheels and driving gears restricts the extensions of the bed.
These and various other advantages of my Invention are secured'by the structure described and these advantages may be retained irrespective of variations in the details of the structure and I contemplate the exclusive use of all such modifications as fall in the scope of my claims.
I claim:
1. In a locomotive, a plurality of driving wheels on one side of the locomotive. driving gears for said wheels journaled independent lll) lll

2. In a locomotive, a bed, a plurality ot driving wheels on one side of said bed, wheel driving gears' journaled von said bed, idler gears in mesh with said driving gears and connecting them and journaled on said bed, and driving means for one of said gears.
3. In a locomotive, a bed, a plurality of driving Wheels von one side ot' said bed, wheel driving gears journaled' on said bed, idler gears infmesh'with saiddriving gears and connecting them, and journaled on said bed, and a driving'pinion in mesh with one of said gears and journaled on said bed. n
4. AIn ak locomotive, driving Wheels, a bed, an internal combustion engine mountedon said bed over certain ot said Wheels, a generator mounted on said bed over other of ysaid Wheels and connected to said engine, a moto-r mounted on said bed over other of said wheels and connected to' said generator and operatively connected to certain of said driving wheels, and operative connections between all of said driving wheels.

18. An electric locomotive bed casting coniprising longitudinal members forming driving wheel pedestals at intervals,.and transverse members connecting and reinforcing said longitudinal members and forming the lower portions of the frames of a motor and generator respectively.
19. A one piece casting comprising alocomotive bed and including an internal combustion engine crank case and a cylinder block adapted to mount detachable cylinder forming liners and a' cylinder head.
20. A locomotive bed having sills and an nis spaced from said gear, and a flanged guard for enclosing the upper portion of said pinion, said guards being formed integrally with each other and with said elements.
22. An electric locomotive bed member in cluding a generator frame element and an integral supporting wheel pedestal formed integrally therewith.
