VALVE CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed November 18, 1926.
The invention relates more particularly to valve constructions embodying removable valve seats and used under conditions requiring cooling of the seat and other parts associated with the valve, the primary object of the invention being to insure adequate cooling of the valve seat in conjunction with a cooling water system which serves to cool the adjacent parts of the mechanism.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious and in part specifically pointed out in the description hereinafter contained which, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof. Such embodiment, however, is to be considered as merely illustrative of the principles of the invention. In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal section through a valve construction embodying the features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the valve seat and housing separate from the parts with which they are associated in Fig. 1.
The invention is illustrated as applied to an exhaust valve construction adapted for use in internal combustion engines, the exhaust valve housing 1 being detachably held in position against a wall 2 which forms a part of the engine cylinder, the wall 2 being in some instances at the side of the cylinder and in other instances associated with the cylinder head, and being provided with a cooling water jacket or chamber 3. The valve housing 1 is also provided with a suitable cooling water chamber 4 and a removable or replaceable seat 5 for the valve 6.
In accordance with the present invention one or more passageways are provided in connection with the valve seat 5 through which the cooling water runs in passing between chambers 3 and 4, whereby the valve seat is, in eflect, made a part of the cooling water circulating system. As shown, the valve seat is provided with an annular passageway 7 which communicates with a plurality of ducts 8 extending from the cooling water chamber 4 in the valve housing, and the cooling water chamber or jacket 3 is provided with a plurality of duct-s 9 which communicate with a passage 10 (shown as extending all the way around the valve seat) in the valve housing, such passage being in communication with the annular passageway 7 of the valve seat, through a plurality of holes Serial No. 149,065.
12 in the periphery of the valve seat. Thus the cooling water in chamber 3 may flow through holes 12 in passageway 7 of the valve seat-into chamber 4 or vice versa, being drawn ofl from or entering the chamber 4 through any suitable pipe (not illustrated). Usually it is preferred to have the cooling water flow from chamber 4 up through the valve seat to chamber 3. The cooling water accordingly is led into direct contact with the valve seat and since the latter constitutes an essential intermediate part of the circulating system between chambers 3 and 4, a positive cooling action upon the valve seat is insured without any likelihood of air pockets forming under the valve seat, which would impair the cooling action.
Preferably the holes 12 of the valve seat are staggered with regard to the ducts 8 in the valve housing to cause the cooling water to pass at least partially around the valve seat and cool the latter more uniformly.
The joint between the valve housing and the wall 2 may be made tight in some suitable manner as by the gaskets 13 and 14 as illustrated.
lVhile a specific embodiment of the inven' tion has been described, it is obvious that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. In combination, a wall having a chamber to receive circulating fluid, avalve houslng connected to said wall, also having a circulating fluid chamber therein, a removable valve seat, and circulating fluids passageways associated with the above mentioned parts permitting the fluid to flow into direct contact with the valve seat in passing from one chamber to the other.
2. In combination, a wall having a chamher to receive circulating fluid, a valve housing connected to said wall, also having a circulating fluid chamber therein, and a removable valve seat having a circulating fluid passageway therein which ail ords CODTlIIlHIllCfir tion between the above mentioned chambers.
3. In combination, a wall having a chamber to receive circulating fluid, a valve housing connected to said wall, also having a circulating fluid chamber therein, a removable valve seat, and circulating fluid passageways associated with the above mentioned parts permitting the fluid. to flow into direct contact with and at leastpartially around the valve seatin passing from onechamber to the other.
