My invention relates to drill "sharpening mechanisms, and more particularlyto hole steels are ening. v
An object of my invention is to provide subjected in formation or .resharpan improved hole opening mechanism of the type described. Another ob ect ofmy invention is to provide an improvedhole opening mechanism having improved con-t trolling means. A further object of my invention is to provide an improved percussive tool operated hole" opening punch having means. for automatically controlling the operation of'th'e percussive tool in accordance with the position of the work with relation to' the punch. Other objects and advantages of my invention Will hereinafter more fully appear. e In the accompanying drawings I have Fig. 1 is a viewpartially in elevation and partially in central longitudinal vertical section through one illustrative form of my improved mechanism.)

In this illustrative form of my invention, the same is shown mounted upon a supporting frame 1, which frame carries at its rear end, that is, the end away from which the blacksmith stands during the drill sharpening operation, a percussive punch operating or pinning motor 2 which is shown more or less diagrammatically, as it may assume any desired form, and to which motive fluid is supplied through a passage 3, the motive fluid being distributed herein by a piston 4 which reciprocates in the cylinder 5 of the top of the frame 1.

It the'vise jaws are suitably guided, in an appropriate manner, for sliding movement transversely in the carriage 25. Ihe carriage 25 is longitudinally movable in the guides 28 carried by A rack 29 is carried by the carriage 25 and an arcuate toothed member 30 interengages with the rack and, being pivoted upon a shaft 31 which may be rocked in bearings 32 upon the frame 1, is capable of effecting longitudinal movement in opposite directions of the carriage 25. For the purpose of oscillating the shaft 31, a lever 33 is secured thereto, which lever is provided with a manually releasable latch member 34 cooperating with a fixed abutment 35 upon the frame member 1. It will be observed that when the carriage is in its rearmost position, the lever 33 is held by the latch 34 and abutment 35 and accordingly that the carriage 25 cannot move forwardly except at the will of the operator. A fluid supply connection 37 controlled by a valve 38 communicates by a passage 39 with the passage 3 previously referred to. The valve 38 has a stem 40 projecting through the cover of its housing 41 and adapted to be engaged by spring pressed abutment member 42 carried in the 1 rear end of the frame member 25, the memher 42 being backed by a spring 43 of such strength as to be able to overcome the pressure of the motive fluid upon the valve when the latter is closed, and to maintain thevalve closed until the carriage starts upon its movement toward the motor 2.
The mode of operation of my improved mechanism will be clearly apparent. By operation of the handle 26 the vise jaws 14 and 15. are moved to receive and clamp a drill steel D. The handle 33 is then moved in a clockwise direction (Fig. 1) after the latch. has been released. As a result of the move ment of the handle 38, the toothed member 30 cooperates with the rack 29 to move the frame 25 and with it the drill steel D toward the pinning tool 10. The carriage 25 is moved by operation of the lever 33 in such manner as to cause the pin to penetrate for' the necessary distance into the hole in the steel D and when the hole has been opened to the necessary amount, the movement of the handle 33 is reversed and the steel drawn back. In case the pin sticks it will be more readily loosened by reason of the hammering during retraction, It will also be observed that as soon as the carriage 25'starts tomove toward the pinning tool, the valve 38 is opened by the pressure of the fluid transmitted through the pipe 37 and fluid then passes by way of passage 39 and passage 3 to the motor 2 and causes the piston to reciprocate and actuate the tool 10. It will further be noted that the motor is operated during the entire forward movement of the drill steel;D and will continue to operate until the steel has been moved entirely out of the range of action of the tool 10 andthe carriage returned to its rearmost position in which it will be held by the latch 34:. The drill steel D may then be removed and other steels operated on in V a similar manner WVhile I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be under-' stood. that this form of the same isshoWn for purposes'of illustration and that the invention maybe modified and embodied in other forms 1 without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims;
