DISPENSING APPARATUS.

This invention relates to dispensing apparatus with particular reference to apparatus for dispensing matches, and the like for advertising purposes.

It is an object of this invention to provide an advertising device adapted to dispense small articles such as matches while at the same time exhibiting a number of advertising lantern slides by the operation of a switch associated with the match delivering mechanism, thus arousing the interest of the person helping himself to a match.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a simplified and i 'iproved vending machine mechanism that can be manufactured at slight expense and will be simple and rugged in service.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.

This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings'and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown on the drawings:

A suitable base 10 has a pair ofoppositely disposed outwardly curved channel members 11 mounted thereon with a vertical partition 12 joining the webs of the channel members at approximately the center thereof. An outer casing 13 envelops the two channel members and the rear portion, narrow flanges 14 overlapping the front flanges 15 of the channel members but spaced therefrom to form guide ways for a grid or slide 16 carrying a number of translucent or transparent colored advertising slides 17 such as are commonly termed lantern slides. The

casing 13 is properly located onthe base relative to the channel members by the keys 18 projecting through slots in the base, the casing being held downby spring-lil re lugs 20'struck from the top of the rear flanges of the channel members; these lugs eXtending through apertures in the casing and also through aligned apertures in a cover 21, the opposite side of which is held by indentations 22 struck therein to enter apertures in the top of the front flanges l i of the casing. The match vending mechanism comprises a match container 23 inserted back of the partition and having a nose portion 24 taper mg towards the partition to feed the matches thereto, the matches being held back by a spring stop member '25 which extendsdown from the bottom of the partition and presses back towards the lip of the nose portion to hold the matches back in the container, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 5.

The match vending lever 26 is pivoted at 27 and has a cam-like or eccentric surface 9.8.contacting the nose or lip of the match container and holding the spring stop member outwardly in the full line position of Figure 5, the eccentric surface producing a receding cylinder-like surface as the lever is pushed dowinallowingthe spring stop to bend back and the match container to move downwardly, the combined movements tending 'to align the matches in parallel relationship in the container and thus preventing clogging thereof. The curved surface 28 of the lever merges into a tangential surface 29, a notch 30, of a depth suitable to receive one match, being located at the juncture of these surfaces so that as the lever is pushed down, this notch is carried past the edge of the spring stop, thus delivering one match at a time asthe notch is so formed as to allow the match to drop out thereof and roll down the lever when the latter reaches The its f limit of downward movement. lever is returned to its upper position by a spring 31 acting on a lug 32 formed on the inner end of the lever.

A switch actuating spring 33 is secured underneath the cam surface 28 at one edge of the lever and pushes a shaft 34: upwardly when the lever is depressed, the upper end of the shaft 3i actingto lift the lower of two insulated contacts 35 into contact with the upper one, the shaft 34 being urged downwardly by a spring 36 in the mounting 37. The wiring circuit comprises an attachment plug 38 and a two wire cord, one wire 89 of which leads directly to two lamp sockets 40 in parallel on the front side of the partition back of the lantern slides, while the other wire 41 leads to one of the contacts 35, an other wire 42 leading from the second contact to the other terminals of the lamp bases. With this arrangement, a circuit is completed to light the lamps 4:3 whenever the lever is pushed down so that the attention of a person operating the device to obtain a match is drawn to the advertising slides lighted by the lamps.

I am aware that numerous details of the process may be varied through a wide range without departing from the spirit of this invention, and I do not desire limiting the patent granted other than as necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

1. An article vending machine comprising a pivoted lever having a cam-like curved surface merging into a tangential surface with a groove near the merging point, said groove being adapted to receive one article at a time, an article receptacle having an in- Wardly tapered back, the bottom edge of which rides on the cam-like surface of the lever, and a flat spring stop forming a movable closure for the front of said article receptacle, the bottom edge of said spring stop also riding on the lever surface in such a position that the groove in said lever passes back and forth under the stop during the lever movement, said cam like surface causing movement of both the receptacle and the stop to facilitate the rearrangement and feeding of the articles therein.

2. In an article vending machine, a movable container for articles to be vended, a resilient closure for said container, a spring controlled lever for actuating said container and said closure to suitably dispense said articles, said lever having a cam surface thereon abutting said container and closure and an upwardly bent pow; on on said lever to define a stop to retain a LiiSPGIlSGCl article upon said lever.
