Description

July 17, 1928. 1,677,145
, F. LERNER GARMENT Filed Sept. 21, 1927 ATTORNEY Y Patented July 17, 1928.
UNITED STATES FRANK LERNER, F NEW Y.ORK,` N. Y.
GARMENT.
Application tiled September 21, 1927. Serial No. 220,882.
The object of the present invention is to provide a garment formed of tubular piece of knitted or woven material in such manner as to enable rapid manufacture and reduce waste of the material to a minimum.
The invention will be described with ref erence to the accompanying drawings inV which- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the completed garment;
Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation of the completed garment;
Figure 3 is a plan view of a tubular piece, cut1 to form the blanks for two garments; an
Figure 4 is a view in transverse section on the line fir-4, Figure 3..
In manufacturing the garment, a tube of the desired length is cut in the form illustrated in Figure 3, forming two blanks. Each blank consists of one leg portion a, the lower body portions b and the upper body portions c and d and the upper back portion e. The dotted line 3 indicates one side or fold of the garment, the back of the garment being indicated at l and the front at 2 (Figure 3).
The two blanks are separated on the lines 4, and section e is swung in the direction of the arrow, Figure 3, until the edge 5 comes into contact with the edge 6, these edges then being seamed. Inasmuch as the garment is tubular, two plies and two separate seams will lie at the point-s 5-6, VFigure 2, when the garment is completed. The section e will be cut along the line 7 so that the two plies e may overlap in the arrangement illustrated in Figure 2 when the garment is assembled, so that one section may carry buttons n` and the other section formed with buttonholes o. The upper portion of lower body member b along the margin will be provided with an elastic band indicated at g, Figure 2.
The two sections cut outof the centre of the tube and indicated at h, Figure 3, being bound at the right and left kby the dotted lines will serve as gusset members for the legs, as indicated in Figures l and 2. Each of the two leg plies L of the tube will be seamed at 8 (Figure 3) tovform the two tubular leg portions of the garment.
The bottom of each leg portion may be provided with an elastic braid, or finished in any other suitable manner, and braid or lace may be employed to nish the neck and arm-hole margins of the garment.y Such finish will serve the additional function of reinforcing the garment and preventing stretching thereof when a knitted or other elastic material is employed.
Having described myv invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows, it being understood that the .form and arrangement of the tube and blank may be changedi 1. The method of manufacturing union suit garments, which comprises cutting a tubular piece of fabric transversely for a portion of its width, and thence longitudinally thus forming an extension and a main body portion, narrowing the extension by cutting out marginal portions thereof inter mediate its length, and carrying the outer end of the extension back to the main body of the tube and stitching it into position, all substantially as described.
2. The method of manufacturing union suit garments, which consists in cutting a tube transversely, and thence longtudinally to form an L-shaped structure, with a transverse member of the width of the tube and a longitudinal relatively narrow member, cutting out opposed marginal intermediate poi'- tions of the longitudinal member, so that said member is of greatest width at its end at its base, and unit-ing said end and base portions of the said longitudinal member, slitting opposed margins of the said transverse member of the tube for a portion of their extent to form two plies, and seaming together the opposed margins of each ply to form leg members substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
FRANK LERNER.
