J. A. D. WATT FASTENING FOR BOXES OR CASES CONTAINING ROTARY SHARPENING APPARATUS FOR RAZORS ,AND EDGE TOOLS Filed Sept. 5, 1925 NVE TOR: JAMssAwBlNBYwm' Patented July 10, 1928.
UNITED STATES 1,617,064 PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ALEX DENBY WATT, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
IASTENING ron Boxes on eAsEs CONTAINING ROTARY SHARPENING APPARATUS Fon mizons AND EDGE Toons.
Application illed September 5, 1925, Seria1 No.`54,746, and in Great Britain September 10, 1924.
This invention has reference to improvements relating to tastenings for boxes or cases containing rotary sharpening apparatus for razors and edge tools, and the invent-ion has for its object to provide a 'fastening or catch of this character for securing the lid to the body of the case or box, said fas* tening or catch being alternatively employable as a Windingkey or cra-nk for transmitting rotary motion to the driven roller of the sharpening device which is containedWithin the case or box so that the one fitting serves for the double purpose. Y
The invention consists ofV an improved fastening for boxes orf cases containing rotary sharpening apparatus forl razors and edge tools, wherein the fastening member is pivotally and rotatably connected to one side of the body of the box or case and is adapted when in one position to engage the lid of the box so as to lock the lid to the body and when freed from the lid to serve as a winding key or rotatable crank for transmitting motion to the rotary sharpening apparatus contained Within the box.
The invention will now be described with particular reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein z- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a box adapted to contain a safety razor and a rotary sharpening apparatus therefor and having a fastening member constructed in accordance with the invention, the said member being shown in the locking position,
Figure 2 is a part sectional end elevation showing the fastening member in the locking position.
Figure 3 is a front elevation showing the fastening member in the unlocked position and ready for employment as a Winding key.
Figure 4 is a part sectional end elevation 'with the fastening member in the position seen in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detail view illustrating a modified form of securing the fastening member to the spindle, and
Figure 6 is a part sectional side elevation of Figure 5.
The box or case 7 illustrated in the drawing is adapted to contain a safety razor and a rotary sharpening device for the blade thereof, thebox or case being such that the blade is held in the requisite sharpening position relative to the sharpening device when the razor is positioned in the box or case.
A sheet metal arm 8 having a handlel 9 secured thereto adjacent one end thereof is pivotally connected at its other end Within a shoe 10 secured to the outerend of a spindle 11 by means of a screw;11.- This spindle 11 also carriesa pinion 12 adapted to mesh with a pinion 13 mounted upon a spindle upon which the abrading roller 15 offthe sharpening device "is secured. The mounting of the arm 8 admits of the said arm being turned about its pivot in the shoe A1 0 so that the handle 9 may be engaged Within a socket member 16 located in the lid 7a of the box or case when it is required to fasten the box or case, the handle 9 being shaped to facilitate its engagement and disengagement with or from the socket member 16. When it is desired to employ the sharpening device, the arm 8 is turned on its pivot in the shoe 10 until the edges of the part of said arm adjacent the pivot lie Within and contact With the side fianges 10a of the shoe 10, whereupon if the arln 8 be rotated by the handle 9, the shoe 10 and spindle 11 are also rotated, thereby transmitting the necessary motion through the gear train to the roller 15 of the sharpening apparatus.
It will thus be seen that When the box is in the closed position as seen in Figures 1 and 2, sharpening of the razor blade cannot be effected, and thus damage to the blade edge due to the thoughtless or curious manipulation of the sharpening apparatus, as experienced heretofore with prior sharpening devices of this character, is prevented.
In the modification illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, the shoe 10 is dispensed with and the arm 8 is provided With a forked section 8a, the jaws whereof are disposed on either side of the spindle 11 and are pivotally mounted on the ends of' a pin 17 secured Within said spindle, this method of mounting the arm 8 admitting of the desired pivotal and rotary motion of the said arm in a lnanner generally similar to that hereinbefore described.
As a further modification, the handle 9 may be slidably mounted in the arm 8 so that the said handle may be pressed inwardly to engage Within the socket member 16 to fasten the box, or the said handle may be drawn outwardly when desired for admitting of the Ithe exterior of the box, and arranged to overlap the lid, engaging means carried byY therturning means, and a cooperating engaging part carried by the lid and adapted to be engaged by the engaging lneans on the turning means When the said turning means is moved about its pivot to overlap the lid.
2.4In combination, a box having a lid, a sharpening apparatus including a tool r0- tatably mounted in said box and including a drive shaftV for said rotatably mounted sharpening apparatus projectingfrom said rotary shapemng apparatus, a crank arm pivotally connected to the drive shaft on the exterior of the box-to impart rotary motion to the said shaft, 'and' arranged to Aoverlap the lid, a handle carried by the ,free end oil. the crank arm by Which the said arm is adapted to be turned to impartrrotary motion to the drive shaft, and a socket memberV arranged in the lid and adapted to be engaged by the said` handle Wlienthe crank arm is moved about its pivot to overlap the lid.
3. In. combinati-ion,` a box having a lid, a
sharpening apparatus including `a tool rotatably mounted in said box, a drive shaft for said rotatably mounted sharpeningl apparatus projecting from said'rotaryj sharpi ening apparatus, a shoe mounted on said shaft, a crank arm pivotallymounted at one end within the said shoe so that said crank arm is arranged to be moved betvveentwo extreme positions, in one of which Vits free end overlaps the lid, a, handle carried by the free end of the crank arm by which the saidA arm is adapted to be turned when in the other extreme position to impart rotary motion to the driveshaft, and a socket member arranged in the lid, and adapted to be I engaged by the said handle when the crank arm is moved about its pivot to overlap the lid. f
vIn testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification. I
