Louis E. EisELEQQF"rnrn n LPHrmrEnNsYnvAm f FIREPLACE ATTACHMENT.
1 Application filed 111M 28, 1927. Serial No. 202,028.
My invention relates to attachments-for tachment is installed in a fireplace-.-
Another object of .my invention is to so design the attachment that it will be incon-.
spicuous when installed in a; fire place and itsparts'so'arranged that the screen and blower may be removed fromthe frame of i the attachment with'a minimum of labor.
which' f g p 1 Figure 1 is'a front elevatioiupartly broken These objects, 1 and 7 other advantageous ends which will appear hereinafter, I atmin in the following manner, reference beingliad to the accompanying drawings in away, of a preferred embodiment of my invention,f
Figure2 a vertical sectional view taken on linef22 on Figure 1, y
Figure 3 a sectional plan view taken online 3-3 on'Figure 1," j r .Figure 4 a fragmentarywsectional view taken on'linc 44 on Figure '2, I
'Figure '5 a perspective view of agulde plate, forming a part of my invention, and
Figure 6 an enlarged perspective view of a pulley support, vention.
Referring now forming a partof my inings, the attachment may be provided with any suitable type .of frame but has beenshown as having a frame 'lO'on the outer edges of which outstanding flanges 11 are formed. .plate 12 is removably secured to -the'jlower part of each side of frame-10 in any: suitable manner, as by screws 13, and has guideway sections 14 and'15 fix d on'one of its faces. Guidewayjsections16 and 17 are fixed to the upper part of each side of frame 10 and align with guideway sections "1 1 and 15 respectively; the ends of the sections preferably abutting one another so as to form a smooth channel on the inside of each guideway.
A pulley support 18 has a pulley 19 rotatably mounted in a' bracket bearing '20- formed near its upper end and is provided with a notch 21 adapted to engage the sides of a screw 22 threaded into the upper part 7 of each side of frame 10. While a screw 22 has been shown, it will be readily understood that a rivet, or other connector having its head spaced from the side of frame 10,
may be employed in lieu thereof and, while more in detail to the drawthe lower end ofeach pulley :support 18 been shownas being attached to framelOby a screw223, it isevide'nt that other means 3 25 whichare of nearly thesam'e' weight so f that they may counterbalanceione another. A cover. plate 27 is secured to the'front and rear of the upper part of frame lOwith'its lower edge aligned substantially with .the
bottom ends of'guides 16'and'17, Reinforc 1- ing angles 28,,having theirbacks flush with the lower. edges of cover plates 2'7, extend across the front and rear of frame 10 and are suitably secured to both flanges 11 and cover plate 27 so as to stiffen the frame at this point as well as to provide awsupport for tiling, plaster or masonrywhenthe at tachmentis installedin the front ofa fire place.-
In installing my improved attachment in. i
afire place, frame 10 isseti in the masonry so that the inner edges of the guideways come flush withthe faces of the side walls? I and-with the front of the attachment set into the masonry sufficiently to allow" for setting the tile or other material thatmay be employed infacing the fire; place.
When it is desired to start a. fire, or to greatly increase the "draft uponra firein the fire place grate, blower 25 is pulled down-.
wardly by inserting apoker. or other tool in a handle or slot formedin the lower edge of the blower. This movement screen 24: to ride to the top" of frame 10, as
will cause the frame is a little more than twice the height of the screen or blower. Whenthe firezis burning satisfactorily, blower 25 .is
pushed upwardly until its lower edge is ap- I proximately flush with or just above angles Y 28 and this movement will cause screen 24 to move downwardly until'its lower edge is in substantially the same plane as the lower edge of blower 25.7 .After a new fire has been started, or material is being burned which is apt to cause sparks to fly out of the grate,'or if the coal is heaped so far above.
the grate that it may fall outwardly upon theheartln screen24 is pulled downwardly in the same manner as described for blower 25, andthus prevents any'sparks or coals from leaving the fire place, i a In case elther screen 2401* blower needsrepairing or replacing, screws 13 and 23 are removed so that pulley support 18 maymovie downwardly and the screen, blower, pulley supports 18, and plates beswsung outg wardly and removed from rame -10. The
different parts are .re-installed by reversing th-isprocessh 1 i K It will thus evident that my improved -:attachment provides adequate protection against sparks orvcoals fromxleaving the fire orgburn out during use; it being understood t'hat'scrcws 13- and 23, are preferably of a di'fierent metal than istl'ran'ie 710' or plates 12,- the screws preferably-being o'f'brass and the.
plates and frame of iron.
While I have" described my invention as taking a particular-form, it willbeunder p 7 V V cured to the lower part of each side o fhthe, V a 75 stood that modifications may be made With-v out departing from the :spirit' thereoflnnd 7 hence I do not limit myself to .the precise construction set forth, but consider that-l:
' am at'liberty to make such changes and theifixed guid'eways, ascreen and a lower;
alterations as fairly come within the scope oi? the appended claims.
fIQcil aim:- i
