POWDER BOX.
applicati@ fue@ Npymber 5, 1927. serial No. 231,274.
This invention relates to improvements in powder -boxes used inpreparing the toilet, and the primary object ofthe invention is to provide a device of this kind wherein simple and eficient means is provided for enabling one to readily cause a powder puff or applicator to take up or receive small quantities of the powder for application purposes, without danger of spilling the powder or taking up an excessive quantity thereof,
A further object is to provide a powder box of the above kind embodying a main box or container and a refill powder containing element removably fitted in the main box or Container so as to be capable lof ready replacement by a new refill element from time to time as found necessary.
A still further object is to provide a powder box characterized as above andV embracing a simple and durable constructoncapable of being manufactured cheaply and readily.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the severalviews,
Figure l is a perspective view of a powder box embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is al transverse section thereof taken on line 2 2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2v with the cover of the main box removed and the powder puff Or applicator depressed as in the act of taking up the powder from the refill element;
Figure 4 is a horizontal section on line -v 4-#4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the refill element with the bottom section of the main box indicated by dotted lines in operative relation thereto.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the present powder box includes a main box or container composed of a lower section having a hollow open top body 5, and a slipon cover 6 adapted to snugly fit over the body 5. The top wall of the cover 6 may be provided with a suitable raised orna1nen tation 7 having a central depression as at 8 within which a suitable trade-name may be tainer 8 as at l0 and secured lthereto kby ad-l hesive or the like. In this way the powder may be placed within the body of the container 8 while the latter is inverted and then the closure sheet or wall 9 The top wall ll of the powder container 8 is of funnel-shape extending downwardlyl and inwardly from the upper edge of the body of the container 8 to a point adjacent but in slightly spaced relationto the bottom wall 9 centrally -of the latter, where it is provided with a central relatively large opening as at l2.
It will'thus be seen that the bulk of the powder is normally retained in the body of the container 8 in surrounding relationv to the opening 12,'and when the usual powder puif or applicator 13 is pressed downwardly through the opening l2 into contact with the bottom wall 9 of the refill powder container, such powder as is disposed in a thin layer upon the bottom wall 9 within the area of the opening l2 will be taken up by the powder puff. It will Yalso be seen that when the puff is elevated a slight suction will be ,created to again draw a quantity of thepowder inwardly to the central portion of they bottom 9 within the area of the opening l2, whereby when the powder puff .is again inserted a quantity of powder will be in position for bemxay be, applied. p
ing taken up. In this way no difficulty will Y be found in taking up the powder in smalll quantities, although taking up` o f excessive quantities of the powder or spilling of theV same will be eifectively prevented. Natu'- `puff whennot in use as shown in Figure 2.
As the lrefill powder container 8 is readily removable from the cavity of the body 5 of the main box, new refill elements may be inserted to replace the used ones as found necessary from time to time. Thus,-I have provided a practical means wherebyv a refill element may be employed handling the powder in loose form instead of cake form as heretofore practiced with refill elements.
Minor Changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
A powder boX comprising a main box body having a removable cover, and a refill elepoint above and in `close proximity to the central portion ofthe bottom of said hollow body7 the hollow body and its top wall being relatively stiff, and a paper closure 2o for the bottoni of said hollow body.
In testimony whereof I aliiX my signature.
JAMES A CLARKE.
