UNITED STATES I 1,675,781 PATENT OFFICE.
cm 0. ANDERSON, OF HITCHEL, SOUTH DAKOTA.
VALVE-ADJUSTING TOOL.
Application fled December 1, 1927. Serial No. 837,111.
This invention relates to valve adjusting I tools and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and clalmed;
Ordinarily, it is diflicult to prevent a sli ht movement of the adjustmg screw of a vafve mechanism when the lock nut 1s bem tightened thereon, and it is an ob ect the present invention to provide means for securely holding the adjusting screw at the proper position when the lock.n ut is being tightened thereon, without altering the ad- .justment of the valve assembly due to a tendency of the adjusting screw to turn with the lock nut while the nut s being ti htened. ith this object in. view, the tool includes a frame havin angularly disposed end portions, one of w ich 1s provided with spaced lu adapted to straddle the rocker arm of t e valve mechanism. The other- I in the openin of the frame, thesaid .screw is adjusted. en the screw is properly adjusted, the lever is swung whereby the cam end thereof engages the side of the shaft of the screw dnver and fixes the shaft with relation to the frame. Thus, the screw is held at the adjusted osition and when the lock nut is tighten .upon the screw, the screw is fixed at the adjusted position upon the rocker arm of the valve mechanism.
In the accompanyiplg drawings; Figure 1 is a side evational view of the vplvi adjusting tool, showing-the same apie P Figure 2 is an edge elevational view of the tool showing part of the valve mechanism in section and out upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1. 1
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the tool cut on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
The valve mechanism, upon which the tool is used, includes a rocker arm 1 of conventional form, having an adjusting screw 2 threaded therein, and a lock nut/3 threaden in use, the working,
ed upon the screw and adapted to bind against the surface of the rocker arm when tightened.
The valve ad'usting tool comprises a frame 4 provide with an larly disposed end portions, one of which is provided with spaceddugs '5' adapted to straddle the intermedlate portion of the rocker arm' 1, when the tool is applied thereto. The frame 4 is provided at its opposite end portion with an opening 6 adapted to receive the shaft 7 of a screw driver 8., A collar 9 is mounted upon the intermediate portion of the shaft 7 of the screw driver and is held at a desired oint thereon b means of a set screw 10. T e frame 4 is urther provided with a recess 11 which communicates at one end with theopening 6. A cam lever 12 has its working end disposed in the said re-- cess and the said lever ispivotally connected with the frame at a point adjacent the opening 6 and when the lever 12 is swung, its cam end may enter the recess 6 and impinge a ainst the side'of the screw driver shaft 7 w er'eby the said screw driver shaft is held agalnst'rotation in the opening 6.
When being used, the lugs are placed in position at the, opposite sides of the intermediate portion 0 the rocker arm 1 and that end portion of the frame 4 which is provided with the recess is disposed ap- K proximately parellel with the rocker arm. The working end of the screw driver shaft 7 is inserted in the slot of the screw 2 and the screw driver 8 is rotated so that the screw 2 is adjusted to the desired position 'in the rocker arm.
After the screw 2 has been adjusted to the desired position, ressure is applied to the upper endof the ever 12 whereby said lever is swung and its cam end engages the side of the screw driver shaft 7. At the same time, the recess end of the frame is forced down upon the upper surface of the collar 9. Thus, the screw 2 is held against turning movement and while the said screw is being thus confined, the nut 3 may be tightened so that inner surface binds against the, surface of the rocker arm 1 and the screw 2 is secured or locked at the adjusting position, and without disturbing the adjustment.
Therefore, it will be seen that an adjusting tool of sim 1e and durable structure is provided and t at the same may be easily and conveniently used for assuring that the screw of the valve mechanism is held at the proper position when it is bein locked or secured with relation to the r or arm of the valve mechanism.
From the foregoing description of the construction of m improved apparatus, it will be seen that f have provide a simple, inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of m invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various chan es in form, proportion and in the minor etails of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having described my invention, what is claimed is:
1. A valve adjustin tool comprising a frame having an ular y dis osed end por tions one of whic is provi ed with spaced lugs, the other end portion having anopening, a screw driver shaft received in said opening, a collar mounted u on the shaft and engaging the frame, an a cam lever pivoted upon the frame and having a working end adapted to impinge the screw driver shaft.
2. A valve adjusting tool comprising a frame provided with angularly disposed end portions, one end portion having means for engaging the rocker arm of a valve mechanism, the other end portion having an opening and a recess communicating therewith, a screw driver shaft received in said opening, a cam lever pivoted to the arm and entering said recess and having a working adapted to impinge the screw driver 0 ning,a collar carried by the screw driver s aft and en aging the frame, a cam lever received in t e recesss of the frame and pivoted thereto and having a working end adapted to impinge the screw driver shaft.
5. A valve adjusting tool comprising a frame having an larly dis osed end portions, one of whic is provid ed with spaced lugs adapted to straddle a portion of the va ve mechanism, the other end portion of the frame having an opening and a recess communicating at one end therewith, a screw driver shaft received in said opening, a collar adjustably mounted upon the screw driver shaft and adapted to engage the frame, and a cam lever having its cam end received in the recess, said lever being pivoted to the frame and the working end of the lever adapted to impinge driver shaft held in the opening.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
