Appl ication filed March 12, 1925! Seam. 14,891.
This'invention relates to improvements in signal devices for automobiles.
'TlllS invention aims to provlde a simple signal device in compact form, so that one illuminated plate can be used either as a stop signal, or to indicate either a right or left hand turn; and consists of a casing having two pivotally mounted indicator plates therein, one towards the top and one towards the bottom by means of which different sig nals may be displayed by moving either plate from its normal position-substantially parallel with the inner surface of the top, or bottom, of the casing to a position practically casing through the rear of which a socket 2 projects. 3 indicates a lamp mounted in the socket. On the front of the casing are inwardly directed flanges 4 which support a transparent plate 5. Rods 6 and 7 extend transversely through the casing in proximity to the top and bottom respectively of the latter and immediately behind the transparent plate 5. 7
On the rods 6 and 7 stencil plates 8 and 9 are fixed. These stencil plates exhibit signs 10 and 11 indicating right and left hand turns, which may take any preferred form such as the arrows shown'in the drawlngs.
12 designates a housing attached to. one
end of the casing 1. In the housing are cyl- I inders 13 and 14 each having one open end, and pistons 15 and 16 therein. On one end of the casing l and within the housing 12 is an insulating pad 17 havinga pin 18- extending outwardly therefrom. On the latter rollers 19 and 20 are removably mounted. One end of each rod 6 or 7 projects into the housing 12 and has a spring 21 or 22 around it which tends to move the rods into such position that their respective stencil plates 8 and 9 are brought into a position substantially at right angles to the transparent plate 5.
To the outer ends of the rods 6 and 7 arms 23 and 241 respectively are secured. Cords 25 and 26 attached to the outer ends of these arms pass around the rollers '19 and 20 respectively to the pistons 15 and '16 to which they are also attached. On the insulating pad 17 two terminals 27 and 28 are placed, and each arm 23 and 24 has a contact member 29 and 30 thereon, so that when one of the pistons which operates one of the arms moves to the closed end of its cylinder its contact member, 29 or 30, connects the terminals 27 and 28. When this occurs one of socket 2. The other lead 35 from thesocket is then also connected to the said source of energy. 7
- From the foregoing it will be clearly seen that'I have devised a simple and effective signal device, and though the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown it is understood that the construction is susceptible to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
In a device of the character described, the combination of a lamp casing having a transparent closure plate, indicator plates within said casing, one of said plates being pivotally mounted longitudinally of said casing ad acent to its upper margin and adapted said second casing, pneumatically controlled tension members, and means in said second conduits extending to said 0 linders respeccasing for normally maintaining said intively, pistons slidable in sai cylinders, arms dicating plates in the first named casing in 10 fixedly secured to said indicating plates, a inoperative position With respect to said 5 pair of flexible tension members extending transparent closure plate.
from saidpistons to said arms respectively, I a single guiding in said second casing for said ISAAC E. GOUCKENOUR.
