Description
NITE) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HUNT BYRON, OF GOVERNORS ISLAND, NEW YORK.
PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,711, dated March 3, 1857.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it lmown that I, GEORGE I-IUN'i` BYRON, of Governors Island, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful instrument, consist-ing of a united arrangement of pen or pencil holders and handles on a diagonal expanding frame for the purpose of ruling parallel lines at'equal or unequal distances, to which I have given the appellation of Expanding or multiple pen or pencil holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of t-he con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view; Fig. 2 an obverse view; and Fig. 3 a perspective and side view of the handle.
In Fig. l A is the handle and pen or pencil holder combined, B pen or pencil holders and handles attached to diagonal frame c, c diagonal expanding frame; l arms, working independently of each other,
,secured by pins at the upper extremities of the diagonal frame, and by thumb screws working in slots in the handle of the holder; e slots in holders; g, Fig. 2, thumb screws.
In Figs. 2 and 3, the same letters refer to the same parts.
The instrument may be constructed of any of the known metals, wood, irovy, &c., or of any substance affording the necessary stability for the purpose set forth.
It consists of a central handle and holder combined, having on each side a diagonal expanding frame; the upper extremities of which are connected with the handle by arms permanently secured by pins to the diagonal frame at one end, and secured to the handle at the other end, by thumb screws.
To use the instrument, arrange the necessary number of pens or pencils that the points are exactly parallel, and when expanded to the required width secure them in that position by the thumb screws g, Fig. 2. The distances can be further varied by removing any of the central pens or pencils.
I do not claim the diagonal frame, nor the holders as my invention; but
I claim- 1. The attachment of the handles of the holders to a diagonal expanding frame and the general arrangement.
2. I also claim the handle A Fig. 8; and the arms Z working by pins in slots, in the attached holders and secured by thumb screws to the handle A, as new.
Neither do I limit myself to any number of holders, which may consist of any re* quired number.
3. I also claim its application, by attach ing pens, known as music pens insteadk of the ordinary writing pen, for ruling several staves of music at one operation.
GEORGE HUNT BYRON.
Witnesses R. JACKSON, I. C. BOYD.
