Application filed November This invention relates to cigars, cigarettes,

and smoking articles ordinarily placed in the mouth, and the primarv object of our invention is to provide the butt. end of the cigar or the like with a sheath that will more or less protect the mouth. The sheath is in the form of a coating that may be applied to a cigar or the like by dipping,

s raying or any 1 tion, so that the sheath adheres to the cigar.

Among the properties of the sheath are'nonimpregnating qualitiesv so that the aroma of the tobacco will not be destroyed; pliable so that the sheath will not crack, crizzle or become disengaged from the 'ci ar; nonsoluble in some instances so that 1t will not immediately dissolve by the action of saliva, susceptible to flavoring and coloring. Another object of my invention is to provide novel, means for distinguishing one brand or kind of cigar from another by encircling or inclosing an end or other portion of the cigar with a colored film-like sheath.

In obtaining the above objects we have compounded a harmless coating which will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will not be had to the drawing wherein Figure 1 having the vided with a sheath or coating; and

For an understanding of our invention we have shown a conventional form of cigar 1 and on the mouth or butt end of the cigar there is a sheath 2 which incloses the inner end of the cigar and extends outwardlyalong the cigar a sufiicient distance to form a lip engaging portion for a smoker, so that the lips or tongue may not contact with the tobacco .wrapper or filler. The sheath 2 is in the form of a coating that may be apis a perspective view of the cigar mouth orbutt end thereof pro- A r plied to the cigar in various ways, for instance by dipping the butt ends of the'cigars in the coating. Obviously the coating may be sprayed, painted or otherwise applied. , The parafiin is a wax-like ingredient which will produce a film-like coating and the parafiin constitutes a body or vehicle for other ingredients. Ordinarily a thin coating of parafiin might crack or crizzle, under lip or tooth pressure, so the mineral oil is utilized to render the paraffin pliable so that the coating may be indented or re-shaped when subjected to mouth pressure.

'Sac charine is a fair example of a sweet ening ingredient that may be used alone as a flavor, but towhich may be added the oil of peppermint or any other flavor.

"Oil brown R is a fair example of a harmless coloring matter which may be utilized to distinguish one brand or kind of cigar from another. 7

Another formula'may be compounded to include 2 oz. orange shellac, oz. sugar, 5 gr. Spanish licorice extract, 5 m. peppermint oil.

The above formulas are suggestive of a transparent, translucent or opaque film-like non-explosive and non-injurious sheath that may constitute a vehicle or carrier for other ,ingredients, particularly a tobacco neutralizing agent or medicinal ingredient.

The thinned out paraffin or orange shellac are adapted to form a skin or film on the cigar and when the coating is used simply for the formation of aband or trade de- -marcation, ingredients may be used in the coating which will riot contaminate the tobacco or injure the aroma,.particularly if the band is burned. The skin or film band or sheath is in contradistinction to a paper band by reason of the latter-being opaque and ordinarily of a material that practically destroys the cigarif the band is burned.

We reserve the right to use other proportions of ingredients than herein stated and 'to make such other changes as are'permissible by the appended claim.

What we claim is: A mouth protecting coating for a cigar,

cigarette or the like comprising a film-like pliable sheath applied to and inclosing the mouth end of the cigar, cigaretteor the like, said coating including as a predominating constituent paraflin .rendered pliable by a mineral oil.
