Description

C. SOHO EN BEIN.
Hat and Coat Hooks.
Patented Aug. 17,18 75i- INVENTOB: ATTO:N:Y%
WITNESSES UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SOHOENBEIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT m HA'l' AND COAT HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,8 15, dated August 17, 1867 application filed July 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that 1, CHARLES SGHOENBEIN, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Hook, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a top view, of my improved clothes-hook.
Similar letters'of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved hook for coats, hats, &c., on which the clothes may be hung without tearing the hanger or changing the shape, being securely retained thereby, and quickly taken off.
The invention consists of a horizontal supporting-arm with forked levers pivoted thereto, of which the upper one is weighted at the rear end to bear on the lower lever and open the front ends, which close like jaws on the coat or other article suspended from the lower lever.
In the drawing, A represents the supporting main arm or standard of my improved clothes-hook, which arm is secured by a baseplate and screws to the wall, or to a folding frame, or to any other suitable place where the clothes are intended to be hung up. Two forked levers, B and O, are fulcrumed to the main arm A, the upper one near the middle, the lower near the front part of the same, the upper lever being suitably weighted at the rear to bear on the rear part of the lower lever, so as to depress the same until detained on projecting stop-pins a of arm A. The front ends of the levers B and 0 form jaws with grooved or roughened surfaces, which jaws are finished in plain or fancy shapes, as desired.
The coat or other article is suspended on the lower jaw, the weight of the same forcing the end of the lower lever up against the jaw of the weighted upper lever, and its front jaws down on the coat-collar, so as to press firmly thereon and retain the same firmly between the jaws. The upper jaw is also provided with an upward-extending hook part, D, for placing thereon the hat.
' When the coat is removed the jaws open instantly by the action of the weighted lever, and are ready for repeated use.
The quick and convenient mode of hanging up and taking 011' the clothes renders the hook device very convenient and practical for hotel, restaurant, and household purposes.
If it should be desired that the jaws should be locked for the safe keeping of the coat, a locking device, E, is applied to the upper lever and standard, securing the lever in closed position on the article suspended until unlocked for taking off the same.
Having thus described my inventiomlclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A hook for suspending clothes, hats, &c., composed of a main arm, A, with fulcrumed upper lever B weighted at the rear end, and a lower lever, O, fulcrumed in front of the top lever to close by the front jaws on the article suspended and open on the detaching of the same, substantially as specified.
CHARLES SGHOENBEIN.
