My invention relates to a new and'ini- [prove-d band-box.
7 One ofthe objects of my invent-i'on is t 'o --make a ba-ndbox of relatively fr'a ile material such as thinpaper which shal have superioi' durability.
Another 'bject of my invention is to-,pre vide arelatively large-baiidb0x of th typ'e used for. packing millinery in, whicliEthe coverof the box is-connected to 'theb'ody portion of the box by an'intermediate flexible strip which will permit the cover of the box to fall back until it can rest upon the support upon which the body of the box is located. v I
Other objects of my invention will beset forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment-thereof, it being understood that the above general statement of the objects of my invention is intended to merely generally explain the same, and not to limit it in any manner. i
Fig. 1 is-a' perspective view showing my improved box.
Fig. 2 is a view.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hinge.
The body portion 10 of the box is made of thin flexible card-board which may be covered with any suitable flexible ornamental covering material and which preferably has a standard shape illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows a fiat rear wall 12 and an outwardly bulging front portion. The cover 11 of the box has substantially the same contour-as the body portion, and said cover 11 is made slightly larger than the body portion of the box so that the cover 11 can be easily forced into the closing position and can be easily swung into the open position shown in Fig. 1.- However, the cover 11 has acertain frictional fit'with respect to the body portion 10. I
The .cover 11' is connected to the body portion 10 by an intermediate strip 13 preferably made of card-board or other flexible material, this being scored along the two hinge-like lines shown in Fig. 2, for example, to facilitate the bending of the said intermediate connecting strip 13. The first flange of the connecting strip 13 is connected to the fiat rear wall of the box longitudinal central sectional by means of fasteners 15 and the second flange of the strip 13 is connected to the bulging front portion of the cover 11 by tharemainder of the'wau or cover.
flanges of the wall of the cover,
an. seriaiito. 261,581. 5
means of this 14fwhi'cli "are, connected in [the bulging .fr'ont Hence, the second th'e fia't rear any suitablemanner to orti'on of the cover. 7 flange of the strip 13 forms portion of thecover 11. This second'fian-ge is cbntinuous with; and alignment with ea f h As shown n, F1g.,2,'.'w1re fasten ing' members 14 of the, ,ordinary type imaly I loyed for connecting the "ears '14 to e e from or curved portion of the cover.
When the cover 11 is moved to the open position, then due. to the flexibility pro-- vided by the'double scoring of the member 13, the said cover 11 can fall back until it'rests upon the double or other support upon' which the box 10 is mounted. This prevents the breakage of the strip 13 be cause it is not compelled to support the weight of the cover 11. It will be noted that in, the position shown in Fig. 2 that v the weight of, the cover 11 mposes littleor no strain upon the strip 13. The intermediate strip 13 difiers from a hinge in that the cover 11 can be moved longitudinally with respect to the body 10, when the cover has been raised from the body. Hence, to
close the cover, it isturned until it contacts v with the body, and the cover is then slid forward until its depending wall can pass over the body. v
I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions could be made without departing from its spirit.
Claims: I
1.A box having a body provided with a flat wall, acover for said box having a contour corresponding to the contour. of said body, said cover having a wall adapted to fit over said body, and an intermediate rigid connecting strip having an intermediate portion connected to two end flanges which are bendable with respect to said intermediate portion, one of said being connected to the wall of said cover and constituting afl at wall portion thereof directly adjacent the flat wall of the body, said flat portion being continuous with and in alignment with the remainder the other of said flanges being connected to-the flat wall of the body below the top thereof.
2. A box havin a body provided with a flat wall, a cover or said box having a contour corresponding to the eeiitour of said body, said cover having a wall-adapted to fit over said body, and an intermediate rigid connecting strip having an intermediate portion connected totwo end flanges Which are bendable with respect to said intermediate portion, one of said flanges being connected to the wall of said cover and con stituting a flat wall portion thereof directly adjacent the flat wall of the body, said flat portion'being continuous with and in alignment with the remainder of the wall of the cover, the other of said flanges being con nected to the flat wall of the body below the top thereof, said flanges being sufliciently bendable with respect to said intermediate portion to permit said cover to swing freely back until its free edge is at the levelof the bottom of the body.
i 3. A box having ,a cardboard body probendable with respect tosaid intermediate portion, one of said flanges having end projections connected to the Wall of the said cover, so that said. flange constitutes a flat wall portion of said cover directly adjacent the flat wall of the body, the other of said flanges being connected to the flat wall of the body below the top thereof, said flanges being freely bendable in both directions with respect to said intermediate portion.
In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature.
