My invention relates to the class of devices that are employed to regulate or govern the speed of motors, and an object of my invention, among others, is the production of a governor that is simple in construction and that is especially effective in operation.
One form of device embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be atttained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in side elevation of a portion of a motor illustrating my improved governor attached thereto, the latter being shown in central longitudinal section, on a plane priming through the pivots of the counterweights and axis of the shaft.
Figure 2 is a view in cross section through the governor showing the braking members in inoperative position.
Figure 3 is a similar View but showing the braking elements in action.
While my invention is not limited in its use to a motor of any special construction, yet as I have produced it especially for employment in connection with an electric motor such has been selected by me for the purose of illustrating my invention in the rawings herein, in which the numeral 5 indicates a motor a ortion onl of which is shown, having the usual hub 6 with a shaft 7 pro ecting from within the case through,
said hub, in a manner common to structures of this class.
My improved governor comprises a stationary cylindrical housing that may be secured to said hub, or that may be otherwise suitably secured in place so long as its, inner surface is concentric with the shaft 7 The inside of the housing is formed to present a smooth, finished surface a ainst which a braking pressure is exerted y the centrifugal action of the counterweights 9, preferably two in number, that are supported by the shafti'.
In the preferred form of construction, and
as shown herein, these weights are pivotally the tension 'of a spring 12 in the form of a. split'ring that is secured, as by means of a s ouldered pin 13, to said weight at a distance from its pivot. An suitable kind of a spring may be employe in the structure herein shown a single spring being secured to both weights toward that end of each opposite the hinging pin.
The outer surface of the counterweights are preferably equipped with felt or other proper friction material 14 to eifect the desired braking pressure against the inner surface of the stationary housin 8, the centrifugal action of the weights be1ng limited and controlled by the tension of the spring which may be such as to suit the purpose for which operates as if the governor were not in place.
The instant, however, that the load is re-= moved and the motor commences to race under idle conditions, the governor promptly acts to set up its control and by its braking action prevents excessive s eed of the motor, the former condition be1ng illustrated in Figure 2 and the latter condition in Figure 3. 1
It is essential that in electric motors particularly the shafts shall be free to float endwise, and. it is to be noted that the governor illustrated and described herein is so constructed and applied as to ermit this free floating of the armature sha t.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the p inci-= ples of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodimcnt thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.
I claim- 1. A governor comprising a housing and a motor shaft reiatively IiIOVBiOlG, a plurality of counterweights supported and relatively movable with respect to said shaft and adapted 'to make contact with said housing substantially entirely around its inner surface, and a single resilient split ring seoureel at difierent points thereon to said Weights to control the action of the latter under oentri'f ugaljorce.
2.- A governor comprising showing and a motor shaft relatively movable, a plurality of eounterweights supported anol relatively movable with respect to said. shaft, and a single resilient split ringsupportecl lay and secured to all of said counterweights to oontrol the solemn thereof unrler centrifugal force.
