COMBINATION FAUCET AND VENT.
Application filed May 17, 1926, Serial No. 109,527.
This invention relates to improvements in faucets for barrels.
The object of my invention is to provide a faucet of said type of simple and relatively inexpensive construction including self-operating means for introducing air within the barrel in measure as the liquid contents are withdrawn whereby the liquid will flow freely therefrom and without other or extraneous means for venting the barreh embodiment of my invention shown in operative position in a barrel, the latter being shown partly broken away to disclose portions of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section of my improved devices on an enlarged scale mounted in a barrel shown in fragmentary section.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on a still further enlarged scale of the inlet end of the vent-tube element of the invention.
Referring to said views, the reference numeral 1 indicates generally a faucet of my invention and improved construction consisting, specifically, in a body 2 having a passage 3 therethrough and terminating at one end in a spout 5 and at its other end in an externally screw-threaded plug 6 adapted to be secured in a threaded aperture 7 in the end 8 of a barrel adjacent the side wall 10 thereof. Said faucet-body is further formed with a polygonal boss 11 adjacent said plug 6 whereby a wrench may be applied to secure to or detach the faucet from the barrel. The faucet is further formed with a conical valve-seat 12 wherein a valve 13 of usual construction is seated and secured by a screw 15 on its underside.

A vent-tube 22 is positioned insaid bore and its outer extremity is flared, as at 23, over said. chamfered opening 21 of the nipple and is engaged and secured thereat by a gland-nut 25 chambered and internally screw-threaded at 26 to engage the threads 18. The inner end of said chamber is formed with configuration corresponding to the chamfered extremity of the nipple whereby a leak-proof joint is made with the vent-tube, the outer end of the latter which is made of copper or other ductile metal serving as packing material due to its relative plasticity. Said nut is formed with an aperture 27 of the same dimensions as the {core of the vent-tube and in the same axial ine.
Said vent-tube extends through the passage-portion 16 and thence within the barrel where it is given an angular bend, as at 28, and terminates in an open end 30 at the diametrically opposite side of the barrel close to the side wall thereof which will normally be above the level of the liquid therein when the barrel is placed on its side in operative condition for evacuating the contents, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
To secure the faucet in operative position as shown in the views the nut 25 is removed. or loosened so that the tube 22 will turn freelyin the bore 20 whereupon thescrewed into said aperture to secure it in place. The tube is then adjusted to bring the end 30 adjacent the upper wall of the barrel and in upright position. The nut 25 is then screwed down upon the flanged end of the tube which will maintain the tubeend 30 in its upright position.
The mode of operation of the invention isbelieved to be sufficiently clear from the foregoing description taken with the drawings.
