SANITARY PUMP.

This invention relates to pumps of the plunger type operated either by hand or power and has for its principal object to provide improved means for preventing polbeing carried into the pump casing by such rod, or in any way entering the casing. In short, the object is to provide an lmproved sanitary pump.
In furtherance of the foregoing my invention contemplates the provision of a telescoping housing structure acting between the pump casing and the pump rod in such manner that the opening or joint between these telescoping housings is at all times enclosed by the pump casing, thus actually preventing the admission of foreign matter to the pump rod or from being carried by the latter into the water compartment within the casing.
My invention will be better understood by reference to the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical section through a pump embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2, is an enlarged section'showing a different form of packing for the pump rod.
While I have shown in the drawing a hand force pump it should be understood that this is merely for purpose of illustration and that my invention is applicable to any plunger type pump either operated by the usual handle or by a power operated pump head, jack, or the like.
The pump shown comprises a pump standard or casing designated generally by 3 having the usual spout 4, a pipe 5 which extends down to the pump proper, and a pump or plunger rod 6. In this particular instance the upper end 7 of the pump casing is cylindrical and has a removable top 8 upon which a suitable cap structure is mounted, including a handle 9. In this type of construction it is customary to connect the handle 9 by means of a suitable connection 10 to the pump rod through the intermediary of a piston rod 11 connected by means of a suitable coupling 12 to the plunger rod 6.
According to my invention I provide an inner housing 13, in this case cylindrical, threaded at its lower end 14 into a cross wall 15 of the pump casing and serving to enclose the plunger rod and to provide for a packing, in one form or another, for the pump rod. In Fig. 11' have shown a common form of packing such as a stuiiing box designated generally by 16. In Fig. 2 I have shown a series of cup leathers 17 con nected to the piston rod 11 and acting against the inside of the housing 13'. The outer housing is of such length that when the pump rod is drawn to its extreme upper position the lower end of said outer housing will still be confined within the pump casing and preferably beneath the upper end of the inner housing so that the two are in overlapping relation. The outer housing may have a sliding fit in the pump casing or a suitable packing may be provided in the joint'if desired. Any accumulation of water within the pump casing above the partition 15 will drain through an opening 21.
It will be seen that my invention provides a practical and efiective means for preventing admission of foreign matter to the water compartment by way of the pump rod. This is due primarily to the fact that the rod is enclosed by an inner housing, such as 13,
and an outer housing, such as 18, in telescoping relation and arranged in conjunction with the pump casing so that the opening or joint between these telescoping housings is at all times confined or enclosed by the pump casing or equivalent structure. This construction protects the pump rod from foreign matter which might otherwise be carried to it by the wind or by other contact. In the event that foreign matter should get onto the housing 18 and work down into the pump casing above the partition 15 there is little or no likelihood of its getting onto the pump rod because of the fact that the latter is protected by both the inner housing 13 and the outer housing. Furthermore, the outer housing is preferably of such diameter and cross-sectional shape as to allow a circumferential space about rm inner housing so that there is no contact between the two. It is especially noted that the lower end of the housing 18 is at all times confined within the pump casing thus providing a protective pump rod housing which is, in effect, permanently closed. This principle of construction also enables ready access to the pump rod and to the packing.
I claim:

In a pump, the combination with a pump casing and a pump rod, of a sanitary housing for the pump rod comprising an inner housing for said rod Within the pump casing and an outer housing fixed to the pump rod and passing down through the top ofthe pump casing and telescoping over the inner housing. v a

In apump, the combination with a pump casing and pump rod, of an inner housing within the pump casing surround-- ing the pump rod and having a packing at its upper end engaging said. rod, and an outer housing secured to the pump rod and passing down through-the top of the pump casing and adapted to telescope over the inner housing.
3. In a pump, the combination with a pump casing and a pump rod, of a sanitary housing for the pump rod comprising an inner housing Within the pump casing and an outer housing in telescoping relation, the
