PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES P. CLEVELAND, 0F MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATER TURBINE.
Application filed January 25, 1926. Serial No. 83,699.
. This invention relates to a water turbine,
the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the water will act upon the wheel in two directions, first as it flows around the wheel casing in a circular direction and secondly, as it passes. through the bottom of the casing.
Another object of the invention is to make the wheel with radial blades, each of which is provided with an inclined lower part upon which the weight of the water will act as it passes through the casing.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the severalparts, to be hereinafter fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 1-- Figure 1 is a top plan view with the cover.
casing removed. l Figure 2 1s a central sect onal view. Figure 3 IS a bottom plan view.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through the .wheel. H
In these views, 1 indicates the casing and 2 indicates the cover plate. The casing is formed with an upperchamber' 3 which has a spiral-shaped, wall and a lower part 4 which has a circular wall, a flange 5 being arranged between the two parts of the easing. The inlet or penstock 6 enters the upper casing at a tangent.
The shaft 7 of the wheel 8 has its lower end journaled in the spider 9. at the bottom l of the casing and the upper part of the shaft passes through a hole in the cover plate and may be suitably connected with the device to be driven. Each blade 10 has a vertical upper part 10 and an inclined lower part 10", this lower part being preferably arranged on a 45 angle and is located in the chamber 4, While the parts 10' are arranged in the chamber 3. The blades are notched, as at 11, to receive the flange 5.
From the foregoing, it will be seenv that the water entering the upper chamber through the inlet 6 will strike the ends of the blades and thuscause the wheel to rotate and then the water will drop down into the chamber 4 and flow to waste, so that its weight and downward movement will act on the inclined parts 10 of the blades and thus give the wheel another rotary impulse faces of the hub,
With this invention, the maximum effect it is secured from the flow of the water so that great power is producedfrom a relatively small volume of water.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I clalm 1S A water turbine comprlsmg a casing, a
flange disposed inwardly from the inner side walls of the casing in a manner to form an upper chamber provided with a spiral wall and a lower chamber provided with a circular wall, said casing having an inlet arranged at a tangent. to the upper chamber, a wheel in the casing and including blades, each blade being formed with a vertical part and a rearwardlyand downwardly inclined lower part of the same length as the upper part, the vertical part being arranged in the upper chamber and the inclined part in the lower chamber, and each blade being notched in its outer end at the juncture of the vertical part with the inclined part to receive the flange and for disposing the free end of said lower part in close proximity to the wall of the lower chamber.
In testimonywhereofl atfix my signature.
JAMES P. CLEVELAND.
