My present invention relates to the manufacture of leather and more particularly to an improved process or method of slicking hides during the manufacture thereof.
In my copending application, SerialNo. 175,199, filed March 14, 1927, I have described and claimed an improved method of slicking hides consisting essentially of, tale ingfthe hides or skins as they issue from the putting out machine, `passing the same over a roll for applying adhesive thereto, simultaneously associating board, passing the same tol a slicking machine such as is described and claimed in my copending application, Serial No.`190,749, filed May 12, 1927, and then passing the slicked hide onto a drying compartment or to a yplace where other operations may be performed thereon. I have found that to obtain the best effects from the slicking process that other operations than that p'erformed by the slicking machine should be performed on the hide or skin, and, further, due vto lack of room, means shouldjbe devised for permittingthe slicking of more than lone hide or skin on the slicking board.
In developing this invention, I have de- `vised a method by means of which a plu rality of operators may work together as a team for placing and slickingthe hides or skins on the slicking board, in addition to that operation performed by the slicking machine and for sending back in a practicallly continuous stream, the slicking boards for attaching thereto on the other side thereof a second hide or skin. By this method of operation, each slicking board has slicked thereon and on each face, a hide or skin so that a considerable investment is saved on slicking boards and in the cost 'of drying chambers or ovens.
'Ihe object of my invention, therefore, is an improved method of slicking hides or skins. While the method of slicking constituting the present invention may be practiced solely by hand, I have foundit more economical and practical to perform certain of the various operations by machines and have, therefore, in the accompanying drawing, illustrated a schematiclayout for practicing my im roved method.

Referring to the drawing, 10 designates` a putting out machine in which the-hide or skin 11 is moved from left to right, or in the direction of the arrow shown and'. onto a conveyor 12, which passes the hide or skin. onto a roll 13, which applies adhesive thereto. After passing over the adhesive roll 13, the hide or skin 11- is moved onto a conveyor 14, orwould be moved onto it were it not for the fact that an operator, standing adjacent to the conveyor 14, grasps a slickingl card 15 arranged in a pile andy places one of the cards under the adhesive roll 13 and onto the conveyor 14,'itk being understood thatthe surface speed of the roll 13 is equal to the speed of conveyor 14. The hide or skin 11 is, therefore, placed in position on the slicking board 15 and'is carried Valong by such conveyor and into position under the operating'mechanism of a slicking-machine 16. Grouped about theV slicking machine 1,6, and preferably 'as shown inthe drawing, are operators positions 17 ,18 and 19.v After the completion of the slicking operation on the hide 11, in'position on the slicking board 15, the slicking board 15 with attached hide 11 may be passed to eitherlof the operators at positions 17,18 and 19, wherev additional operations suchas slicking the shoulders, cheeks or butts maybe performed.' Assume for a momentthat the slicking board 15 with attached and slicked hide 11 passes to fthe operator at position 17, where such operator performs the additional operations' necessary, after such operations are completed, the operator at position 17 turns the slicking board lvdownward, on a platform 20, vand a workman carries the slicking board 15, or a plurality of slicking boards 15 if such are positioned at 20, and moves along the dash line shown in the direction of the arrow, placing-the same eventually in the position from whence it started. If the slicking board 15 with the slicked hide or skin 11 thereonpasses from the slicking machine 16 to the operator at position 18,7such operator performs the extra operations necessary thereon and turning the slicking board 15 over,places it in the position indicated at 21, Where the Workman above referred to Will in his travel along the dash line, pick up such slicking board or boards and place-it or theniin the position from When'ceit started; The same .is true likewise if the slicking board 15 with the slicked hide or skin 11 thereon passes to the operators position indicated at 19, Where the extra operations being performed thereon, such slicking board 15 is turned over and placed in the position indicated at 21, Where the Workman above referred to in his travel alongthe dashi line will pick up the slicking board 15 with attached and slicked hide 11 vthereon and place the same in the position from whence it started. Preferably 'at each position 17, 18 and 19, there are two hand operators in order to expedite the procedure. As the slieking boards 15 are passed onto the conveyor 14 the second time, that is, with one skin 11 already slicked thereon, such slicking board passes V,to the slicking machine at 16 and from thence to either of the positions 17, 18 and 19. After the extra operations have been performed on the hide or skin 11, the slieking boards 15 noW provided With a skin on each face, are place-d on tables (not shown), at each operators position 17, 1,8- and 19, from whence they are collected periodically by Workmen andy hung upon hooks, as isiusual, and placed in the drying room. ,v
By properly routing the slickingvgboar'ds 15 through the various operators and dispensing with the slow laborious method of applying adhesive to the Ahide or skin 1'1 and positioning the hide or skin 1l manually on the slicking boards 15,I speed up production to a great extent and Yby .performing the major operation of the slicking operation by mechanical, as distinguished from manual means, I am enabledto perform a better slieking operation and one which will produce a better nishe'd hide or skin than has heretofore been possible. By grouping the operators at positions 17, 18 and 19V to per'-V forin the eXtra operations on the hide or skin, and by properly routing the hidesV or skins on the slicking boards `back to the Y starting point to be sent: through the process a second time for the `purpose ofV applying skins to both Vfaces of the slicking boards, I econoinize greatly on room and yexpedite to a great extent the method of siicking. The result is a supe-rior product produced vat less cost than has heretofore been possible;
