T. K. WOOD CIGARETTE BUTT EXTINGUISHER Filed Sept. 30. 1926 726497fi) Jrimz 75 0 27W 9- Patented Feb. 21, 1928.
TRUMAN K. WOOD, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
CIGARETTE-BUTT EXTINGUISHEB.
Application filed September 30, 1926. Serial No. 188,600.
My invention relates to a cigarette butt extinguisher and has for its princi a1 objects the revision of an ornamental evlce that com ines with an ash tray or receptacle a plate or disk that is provided wlth a series of recesses or perforations that are adapted to receive the lighted ends of cigarette butts for the purpose of extinguishing the same and consequently preventing further smoke "I from arising from the butt after it has been discarded.
A further object of my inventlon 1s to provide a cigarette butt extinguisher that is constructed so that the cigarette butts or stubs placed in the extinguisher may be readily dischar ed therefrom into a recap tacle that functlons as an ash receiver.
Further objects ofmy invention are to rovide a device of the character referred to that is. relatively simple in construction,
inexpensive of manufacture, and of ornamental a pearance.
With 0 foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel 8 features of construction and arrangement of parts that will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompan ing drawing, in which- Fig. 1 1s a pers ective view of an ornamental object or xture that includes my improved cigarette butt extinguisher and an ash tray.
Fig.2 is a plan view of the cigarette butt extinguisher. I
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. K 7
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a practical embodiment of my invention, 10 desi nates a tray or shallow receptacle, referab y circular in form, and which is a a ted to function as an ash tray, and mounte on the edge of said tray and projecting u wardly therefrom is a standard 11, pre erabl a statuette, and supported by this gure or statuette and positioned directly over the central portion of the tray 10 is a disk 12 through which is formed a series of vertically arranged a ertures 13, the diameters of which are slig tly greater than that of the average cigarette. The upper ends of the apertures 12 are preferably counter sunk as designated by 14 in order to facilitate the entrance of the lighted ends of the cigarette butts into said apertures.
Depending from the edge of the disk 12 is a pin or rivet 15, upon which is pivotally mounted a disk 16 that serves as a closure for the lower ends of the apertures 13 and this disk is mounted on its pivot pin so that it may be turned to one side, thereby opening the lower ends of all of the apertures 13 so as to permit the cigarette butts and the ashes that have accumulated in the a ertures 13 to discharge downwardly into t e tray or receptacle 10.
In the use of my improved extinguisher, the
lighted end of the cigarette butt is inserted in one of the apertures 13 and the butt is forced downwardly in said aperture until the lighted end makes contact with plate 16. Inasmuch as the burning end of the stub can receive practically no air to support combustion, the fire will very quickly be smothcred, thereby eliminating the objectionable smoke that arises from smouldering cigarette butts.
By swinging plate 16 laterally in either direction .so as to open the lower ends of the apertures 13, the cigarette butts that have been placed in said apertures may be discharged into the tray or receptacle 10.
My improved device, and particularly the perforated disk that receives the li hted clgarette butts, may be constructed 0 any suitable fire-proof material such as metal, glass, porcelain, or the like.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a relatively simple, practical and convenient device for extinguishin the butts of cigarettes, ci ars, and the e, and which device is com ined with an ash tray to provide an ornamental and convenient device.
It will be understood that minor changes in the'size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved cigarette butt extinguisher may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my' invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A cigarette butt extinguisher com rising a disk provided with a series of per orations and a closure plate pivotally connected to the underside of said disk so as to swing in a horizontal plane and adapted when positioned directly beneath said disk to close the lower ends of all of the perforations in said disk.
2. In a. device of the character described,
a receptacle, a standard projecting upwardly from the side of said receptacle, a disk supported by said standard said disk being 6 provided with a plurality of perforations and occupying a position directly above and over the center of said receptacle and a plate pivotally mounted on the underside of said dlsk so as to swing in a horizontal plane in either direction and adapted when po- 10 sitioned directly beneath said disk to close the perforations therein.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
TRUMAN K. WOOD.
