LIQUID-MEASURING VALVE.
Application filed October as, 1926. -Serial No. 144,827.
The present invention relates to valves for controlling the flow of water or other'fluid,"

'With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein the figure is a median section ofthe device in open position, portions being shown in elevation.
In carrying outv the invention there is provided a casing 7 having the removable screw 1 bottom 8 through the central portion of which is screw-threaded-a tubular inlet member 9. A lock nut 10 is threaded on the member 9 to bear against the bottom 8 and maintain the adjustment of said member. The casing 7 has an outlet neck or portion 11 centrally of the top of the casing, and it will be apparent that the device may be disposed in various positions although it is described in upright position. a
The top 7 of the casing has a valve seat '12 surrounding'the outlet, and against which a valve disk 13 is seatable from below to close the passage through the casing 7 between the inlet and the outlet. The disk 13 may be of any suitable kind, such as a metal disk having a covering or coating of rubber agamst the seat formed by the flange 20 surthereon.
The valve disk '13 is carried by an expansion, chamber 1% disposed within the casing 7, whereby the expansion of said chamber will seat the valve disk 13, whereas the con' traction of said chamber will unseat said valve disk. The chamber lt iscomposed, of
the top and bottom corrugated diaphragms 15 and'16, respectively, attached together at their outer edges by a suitable seam.
The chamber 14 is mounted on the inlet member 9. Thus, a plug 17 is screw-thread.-
" ed into the upper end of the member 9 and passes through a central opening in the bottom diaphragm 16, and said plug has aflange 1$overlapp1ng the inner edge portion of the glapiragm 16 to clamp same on the inc-m er r r The valve disk 13 is mounted on theupper diaphragm 15, and, for this purpose, a tubular member 19 extends through a central" opening of the diaphragm 15 and has a flange 20 overlapping the inner edge portion of said diaphragm. The disk 13 is screwthreaded on the member 19 to clamp the inner edge of the diaphragm 15'betweeu the disk 18 and flange 20. The valve disk 18 is thus moved upwardly and downwardly with the dlaphragm 15, and the distance ot movement ot'the valve disk 13 from the seat 12 is controlled by adjusting the member 9 upwardly and downwardly relatively to the bottom 8 of the casing.
The member 9 has openings 21 therein to permit the fluid to flow from within said member into the casing, and a collar 23 is screw-threaded on the member9 within'thc casing and may be employed for controlling the flow of fluid through the openings '21 by screwing said collar more or less across said openings. The member 9 may also be I adjusted downwardlyso that theopenings 21 are controlled by the bottom 8 of the casing.

A relief valve 27 is seatable' upwardly the member 19. A coiled spring 29 surrounds said stem and is confined between the lower end of the member 19 and a nut 30" threaded on the stem 28, whereby to seat the valve 27 The member 19 forms a shield surrounding the stem 28 to prevent the fluid which flows past the valve disk 13 and through the outlet from tilting the stem 28 and opening the valve 27 during the closing operation of the valve disk 13.
A plunger 31 is slidable through the neck portion 11 of the casing and has a knob or push button 32 at its upper or outer end, with a spring 33 confined between the push button 32 and portion 11 to normally retract the plunger 31. A collar 3 1- on said plunger limits the upward or outward movement thereof, and a cushion wash r 35 surrounds the plunger 31 and is disposed between the collar 34 and portion 11. The plunger or push rod 31 is in alinement with the stem 28 so that when the push button 32 is pushed down, the plunger 31 will contact with the stem 28 and move the valve 27 open.
In operation, with the valve disk 13 hearing against the seat 12, and the chamber 14 filled with fluid, said chamber is expanded to holdthe valve disk 13 seated. This shuts off the flow of liquid or fluid from the inlet to the outlet of the casing. By pressing down on the push button 32, the relief valve 27 is opened. thereby relieving the pressure from within the chamber 14. inasmuch as the. fluid within the chamber may flow throng-h the opening 26 and member 19 to and through the outlet, and has a result of the relieving of the internal pressure within the chamber 14, said chamber will contract, thereby moving the valve disk 13 open, as seen in the illustration. When the internal pressure within the chamber 14 is reduced by the opening of the relief valve 27, the external pressure on chamber will assist in the collapsing of said chamber to open the valve. The fluid may now flow through the device, and during such flow, as indicated by arrows in the drawing. and when the button 32 is released, the plunger 31 and relief valve 27 are immediately restored to normal position.
Consequently, as the fluid flows through the device, the pressure will force a small stream of fluid through the opening 23 into the chamber 14, thereby gradually building up the pressure within said chamber and expanding said chamberuntil the valve disk 13 is moved against the seat 12, which will shut oil? the flow of fluid after a predetermined amount of fluid has passed through. The length of time that the valve is kept open. for purpose of regulating the amount of flow of fluid, is determined by adjusting the member 9 upwardly and downwardly. and by adjusting the needle valve 2 1. As the valve disk 13 approaches the seat 12, this will increase the pressure of the fluid in the chamber 14, thereby equalizing the pressures within and without said chamber to close the valve gradually in its final movement.
The pressures on the opposite diapbragms 15 and 16 is substantially the sameboth externally and internally of said chamber.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed as new is 1. A valve device comprising a casing having an outlet, an inlet member adjustahly mounted in the casing and through which the fluid enters the casing. an expansion chamber carried by said member within the casing, a valve member carried by said chamber to close said outlet by the expansion of the chamber, said inlet member having communication with said chamber. and means for relieving the pressure from within said chamber.
2. A valve device comprising a casing having an outlet, an inlet member through which the fluid enters the casing having; an opening at one side within the a collar adjustable on said member and coin trolling the flow through said opening. an expansion chamber carried by said member within the casing. a valve member carried by said chamber to close said outlet when the chamber is expanded, said inlet member com-- municating with said chamber, and means for relieving the pressure from within said chamber.
3. A valve device comprising a casing having an outlet, an inlet member adiustahly mounted in the casing and having an open- .ing through which the fluid flows trom said member into the casing. said opening being arranged to be controlled by the portion ot the casing through which said member extends, an expansion chamber carried by said member within the casing. a valve membercarried by said chamber to close said outlet when the chamber is expanded. said inlet member communicating with said chamber, and means for relieving the pressure from within said chamber.
4. A valve device comprising a casing having an outlet, an inlet member extending into the casing opposite to said outlet and through which the fluid flows into the easing, an expansion chamber mounted on said member within the casing. a valve member carried by said chamber to close said outlet when said chamber is expanded, said inlet member communicatingwith said chamber, and means for relieving the pressure from within said chamber.
