such construction as to preventthe passage of a projectile, mustlargely absorb the im-.
pact of the projectile and must present a minimuznofi waterresistance when the vessel is in motion.
The device of my invention possesses all of the above mentioned, and other desirable properties as will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and its accompanaying drawings.
In order to accomplish the desired objects, my device comprises two differently con structed parts,one of which protects the bow and stern of the vessel and the other of which protects the sides of the hull.
A consideration of the contour of a vessel shows that when it is in motion, the force of the water is against the face of the protective means at the bow and stern, while the force of the water is parallel with the face of the protective means at the sides of the vessel.
It is evident, therefore, that the construction of the device must be of such a character as to otter the least possible water resist-- ance at these respective portions of the vessel.
I accomplish this by forming my device of a grate-like construction at the fore and aft portions of the vessel, thus allowing free passage of the water therethrough, and forming the side portions of a conduit-form to allow of the unimpeded passage of the water therethrough.
By making my side portions of a double reversed U-shape instead of a closed conduit, I reduce the amount of metal thus reducing the weight, I reduce the amount of surface friction and'I produce a device having a certain amount of spring which will absorb the impact of a projectile to some extent, thus reducing the ellect of the blow upon the hull.
The advantages of my device will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and its accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating one form of the device of my invention, similar parts are designated by similar numerals.

The particular: form .of the. device: of. my invention shown in the. accompzmying, drawings comprises a plurality of double reversed U-shaped supports 10, each having the stays l1 and 12 These supports are fixedly attached to the opposite sides of the hull 13, preferably by stay- rods 14, 14. The U-shaped supports l0, 10 extend along each side oi. the hull 13 toward the stem and stern of the vessel, the latter two parts being protected will be described later. Fixedly attached to the outer faces of the Lshaped supports is a protection plate 15.
The stem and stern of the vessel are protected by a grate composed of two base bars 16, 16 connected by a plurality of spaced grate rods, or bars, 17, 17. This. protective grate is attached to the hull of the vessel by means of the angle supports 18, 18 and by means of the ti- shaped supports 18, 18, similar to those already described.
It will thus be seen that the entire hull of the vessel for a considerable distance belou the water-line carries a protective device and that it offers but a very slight increased water resistance. I
When the vessel is in motion, the water passes ireely through the forward protection grate which is the same general contour as the bow of the vessel, anu then passes along the sides of the hull, meeting with only the face resistance of the U-shaped protective plates and then outwardly through the stern protective grate.

What I claim is 1. In a protective device, in combination tective grates carried by of said hull and with the hull of a vessel, a plurality of double reversed U-shaped members attached to the sides of said hull, a protective plate carried by said U-shaped members and prothe bow and stern of said hull.
2. In a protective device, in combination with the hull of a vessel, a plurality of double reversed U-shaped members attached to the sides of said hull, a protective plate carried by said U-shaped members, a protective grate carried by the bow of said hull and having the general contour of said bow, and a protective grate carried by the stern having the general contour of said stern.
3. In a protective device, in combination with the hull of a vessel, a plurality of double reversed U-shaped members attache to the side of said hull, a plurality of: brace d day of July, 1927.
