IMPROVEMENTIN PEN AND PENCIL CASES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,723, dated July 20, 1875; application filed February 2, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osEPH U. GEROW, of Brooklyn, in the county oi' Kings and State ot' New York, have invented an AImprovement in Pen and Pencil Gases, of which the following is a specification:

Gases have been made with a pencil at one end and a pen at the other, and the pencil has been projected and retracted simultaneously with the pen by the action of cylinders containing' spiral slots. Pen and pencil cases have also been made with the pen and pencil at one end ot' the holder or case and projected separately by the action oi' slide-bands around the case, or by an extension-tube.

My invention is made for projecting the pencil at one end by a reverse movement of the slide that surrounds the case, and at the same time projecting the extensiontube; and combined with this is a pen-holder and slide operated by a band around the case. By this j construction the pen and pencil are both projected at the same end of the case, the act of projectingthe pen withdraws the pencil, if that was projected, and vice versa, either pencil or pen can be projected or withdrawn separately, and the pencil, it' projected, is retracted by pressing in the extension-tube, and, when the case is closed, the bands occupy opposite ends ofthe case, improving its appearance.

In the drawing, Figure l shows the outside of the case as closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, with the pencil projected and the case extended.

The ever-pointed pencil a is of ordinary character. It is made to slide endwise in a sta tionary tube, b, and around this is a tube, c, with a spiral slot acting upon a pin that projects through a longitudinal slot in the tube b into the screw-formed or spiral slot in c, and

this tube c is free to turn, but is lheld in posi-v tion endwise by shoulders on the tube b.

The spiral slotted tube c is rotated by the spiral tube e, that is moved endwise within the tube It by the connection through the longitudinal slots in the tube h and case g, to the band j'.

By this construction the pencil is moved in the opposite direction to the movement of the band j', and is projected at one end of the case when the slide is moved toward the other end of the oase, and in these particulars corresponds with the pencil-cases that have been made, wherein the same movement that projects the pencil at one end projects the pen at the other end.

My invention, however, differs from those that have before been made, inasmuch as I make use ot' a band, l, and pen-holding slide o within the case g, connected in the-ordinary Way 5 but vthat connection is in the same longitudinal slot in the case g as the connection between the band fand pencil-projecting` tube e,- and, furthermore, I apply the extensiontube r that surrounds and slides upon the stationary tube It, such tube r being inside ot' the pen-holding slide and passing through the ornamental collar t.

By this construction and arrangement the extension-tube r can be drawn out at any time; but if the same is pushed in when the pencil a is projected the bandfis moved by the inner end of this extension-tube, and thereby simultaneously the pencil is withdrawn, and when the pencil is projected, this extensiontube r is simultaneously projected to the extent ot' the movement of band f.

rlhe pen-holding slide can be projected or retracted freely and independently when the pencil is retracted, and the extension-tube may be either drawn out or pushed in, but it' an attempt is made to project the pen when the pencil is protruding, the pencil will be withdrawn by the band of the pen pressing against and moving the band fot' the pencil, so that the pencil cannot remain in a position to become soiled by the ink.

The bands fand l, occupying opposite ends of the case g when the pen and pencil are .re tracted, improves the ornamental appearance of such case.

I claim as my inventionrlhe combination, with a pencil, a, that is projected from the case by a band, f, moved in the opposite direction, ot' a pen-holder, o, projected from the same end of the case as the pencil a by a band, Z, around the case g, and of an extension-tube, r, at the other end ot' the case, passing within the pen-holding slide and surrounding the stationary tube It, as and for the purposes set forth.
