IMPROVEMENT IN BARBERS" CHAIRS.
Spacification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,498, dated July 13, 1875 application filed October 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN OTT, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbers Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a specification of the same.
In the annexed drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the chair; and Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in sections.
The same letters are employed in both figures in the indication of the same parts.
A is the frame of the chair, and B is the foot-rest, supported on the sliding frame 0,
back F is separate from the arms, and hinged to the chair frame by hinges G on each side. In order to sustain the back of the chair, a bar, H, of strength sufticient amply to sustain the weight of an occupant of the chair, is hinged to the frame and extended upward, so as to bear against the back at I, where metallic lugs confine it. A pawl, K,is attached to the lugs by a pivot, and its teeth are made to engage ratchet-teeth in the back of the hinged bar H. The arm of the pawl hangs down and keeps the teeth normally engaged with the ratchet-teeth of the bar, so that the weight of the occupant will rest on the back and be sustained by the bar, thus relieving the hinges. To lower the back it is necessary to raise the arm of the pawl and disengage the teeth, which become re-engaged when the pawl is released. To raise the back it is only necessary to lift it, as the pawl does not interfere with movement in that direction. The
head-rest is adjustable also, being in like manner held by pawl and ratchet M.
I am aware that a support for the back of the chair attached to the seat-frame and confined by a latch has been employed. My invention is distinguished from that in this, that I extend the hinged piece and cause it to support the chair-back near its upper end, where it is confined by the pawl. By this means the leverage is diminished and the danger of breaking, which might result in a most serious accident to the person being operated upon, removed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the frame and hinged back, the hinged support H, fastened by a joint to the frame, and bearing against the back, where it is confined by the ratchet and pawl K, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- JOHN OTT.
