This invention has to do with a pump attachment and it is an object of the invention to provide a pump attachment operable to feed fluid to-the pump. I
It is necessary in various situations to pump heavy or thick fluids such as heavy oils, molasses, etc. In practice difliculty is' experienced in obtaining proper feed of such li uids to a pump. Further, in practice it as been found advantageous to use rotary pumps for handling this general class of flui It is an object of my present invention to provide a pump attachment operable to feed the fluid to the pump.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a pump feed device of a design and construction whereby it is readily applicable to the standard typeof pump commonly employed to handle heavy or thick fluids.
It is another object of this invention to provide a feed device for a rotary pump which is operable from the pump and which is operable to feed the fluid uniformly to the ump.

The device which is the subject of this invention is particularly applicable to rotary pumps or dispensing devices. For example, it may be advantageously applied to pumps of the general class or type setiorth in my co-pending application entitled Device for dispensing fluids, filed March 5, 1925, Serial No. 13,128. In the drawings I have illustrated a simple and typical form of rotary pump operatively connected ticular em odiment of the invention.

The pump includes, generally, a more or less cylindrical shaped casing 12 closed at both sides or ends by end plates 14, a shaft 15 extending throu h the casing and supported in bosses provided on the outer sides of the end plates. The casng 12 is provided with a rojection 17 having an opening 19 througi which the fluid isadmitted into the pump and with a ro- JGCtlOII 18 with an opening through w ich the fluid discharges from the pump. In the particular pump illustrated in the drawings the projections 17 and 18 aretangentially disposed with reference to the body. A rotor 12 is mounted in the casing on the shaft and carries a plurality of blades 12 which operate to carry the fluid throu h the casing from the intake opening to t e discharge. It is to be understood that my present invention is not concerned with or limited to any particular form or type of iluid handling means in the pump construcion.
The device provided by this invention is particularly suited for construction as an attachmentto be applied to a pump such as I have above described. I have -illus trated the device as an attachment for the pump 12 and have shown a form of construction articularly suited for this para The device as shown in the drawings includes, generally, a body 20, a fitting 21 for connecting the body with the intake of the pump, and an impeller 22 operating in the ody. To apply the device to the pump 12 the boss 16 on the end plate 14 at the side of the pump opposite the motor 11 is screw threaded to receive the body 20, and the pump is provided with a shaft 15 which will extend'from'said screw threaded boss into the body 20 to carry the impeller 22. The main part 25 of the body is in the form of a tube and is located so that the shaft 15 of the pump projects or extends centrally into or through it.
The impelleris in the form of a screw mounted on the shaft 15 within the main part of the body to receive fluid at the outer or intake end of the bod and feed it to the inner or discharge en of the body The body has a tubular discharge part 26 extending from the inner end of the main part 25 at right angles to the main part of the body to carry or conduct the fluid fed to the inner end of the body. The fluid to he handled may be conducted to the intake end of the body in any suitable manner, for instance through a pipe provided with a suitable control valve 31.
The fitting 21 is provided to connect the part 26 of the body 20 with the projection 17 of the pump to conduct fluid from the body 20 to the intake of the pump. The body 20 is applied to the screw threaded boss 16 so that the part 26 is parallel with the projection 17 of the pump, in which case the fitting 21 may be a simple U-shaped fitting as shown in the drawings. In the case shown in the drawings the opening 19 in the pump projection 17 is internally screw threaded, so I find it convenient to screw thread a flanged ring into the projection so that it presents a flange 36 suitable for connection with a flange 37 on one end of the fitting 21. The other end of the fitting is provided with a flange 37 to connect to a flange 36 on the part 26 of the body. 7
The impeller 22, as before stated, 1s preferably in the form of a screw, in fact in practice it is usually desirable to make 1t a double pitched screw as shown in the drawings. The impeller is fixed on theshaft 15 as by a key 40, or the like, and is pitched so that it will feed fluid through the body 25 in the desired direction when the shaft is operated to drive the pump.
In practice various means may be provided for connecting the body 20 with the pump 10, it being preferred to' provide the I body at its inner end with a screw threaded socket or opening 42 to receive the screw threaded boss of the pump. This construction is particularly simple and practical as it is very simple to form the socket 42 in true alignment with the main part 25 of the body thus causing the main part of the body to properly align with the pump shaft when the attachment is applied. From inspection of the drawings it will be apparent that the inner end of the body is completely closed except for an opening 43 provided to pass the pump shaft.
In operation the impeller being fixed on the shaft 15 operates continuously during operation of the pump and is effective in advancing fluid through the body 20 and fitting 21 to the intake of the pump. It will be apparent how the impeller acts to aid the action of the pump and is effective in feeding heavy or thick fluids such as are slow to respond to the suction or intake action of an ordinary pump.
From the foregoing description it will he apparenthow the device provided by this invention can be easily and quickly applied to a rotary pump of typical construction.
Further, it will be apparent that the device is simple of construction and operation and can be made easily and at little expense.
Having described only'a typical preferred form of my invention I do not wish to limit myself to the specific details set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any changes 'or variations that may appear to those skilled in the art orfall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. An attachment for a pump having a drive shaftprojecting from it through an externally screw threaded boss including a body to screw thread onto the boss, an impeller to be mounted on the shaft in the body, and a fitting for connecting the body and intake of the pump.
2. An attachment for a pump having a drive shaft projecting from it through an externally screw threaded boss including a tubular body to screw thread onto the boss to be coaxial with the shaft, a screw impeller to be mounted on the shaft in the body, and a fitting for connecting the body and intake of the pump. i
3. An attachment for a pump having a casing with an intake opening at its periphery and an externally scnewthreaded projection at one side with a drive shaft projecting from itincluding a tubular body to be screwt-hreaded to the projection to be coaxial with the shaft, a screw impeller to be mounted on the shaft in the body, and a fitting for connecting the outlet opening of the body with the intake opening of the pump casing.
4. An attachment for a pump having a casing with an intake opening at its periphery and an externally sc'rewthreaded projection at one side with a drive shaft proecting from it including a tubular body to be screwthreaded to the projection to be coaxial with the shaft and having lateral outlet opening, a screw impeller to be mounted on the shaft in the body, and a. U-shapcd fitting for connecting the outlet opening of the body with the intake opening of the pump casing.
