Application filed September 22, 1926. swam. 136,557.
My present invention relates tojimprovements in combination )adlocks of the type utilizing a U-shape slicing shackle and rotary rings combined therewith. The primary object of the invention is. the pro vision of a lock of this character which is adapted for many different uses, and is composed of a minimum number of parts to insure low cost of manufacture. The device is simple in construction and may be operated or manipulated with facility to render it free from unauthorized use.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangementof parts involving the rotary locking rings and slidable shackle as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention in which the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a combination padlock involving my invention; 2
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view of the padlock showing by dotted lines the bars of the shackle in open position;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view at line 3-3 of Fig. 2; s s
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional View showing the friction devices between the rotary rings and the body of the padlock; and
Fig. 5 is a cross sectionalview of one of the rotary locking rings. V 1
In carrying out my invention, I employ an interior body or core 1 having spaced heads 2 and 3 preferably of circular shape and riveted or otherwise rigidly secured at the opposite ends of the body as at 4. The round body and its heads 2 and 3 thus form a rigid structure upon which are mounted a number of rotary rings designated 5, 6, 7 and 8. The number of rings may be varied,
and they are interposed between the two heads 2 and 3 of the padlock. The rings are independently rotatable and each ring is provided with an annular rib 9 on one face and a complementary groove 10 on its other face in order that adjoining rings may have the ribs and grooves in position to retain them in alinement and to guide them in their rotary movement. The head 2 is fashioned with an annular groove '11 for a r b on ring 5 and the head 3 is fashioned with a complementary. annular rib 12 to'fit in a groove lOof the rotary ring 8. In this manner, the rings whiclrare interposed be tween the two heads arer'etainod' in position spring blades 15 corresponding to the number of rotary rin s, each blade being an chored at 16 in theybody l, of the padlock. The. interior fare of each ring is notched as at 17, and the free end of a spring 15 engages with these notched portions of the rotary ring to hold it in stationary position. It will be understood of course that the rotary rings may be freely rotated, but
the spring detents 15' provide frictional engagement to retard the movement of the rings and to retainfthemin adjusted position.
to be rotated independently of each'other and of the two spaced heads. In Fig 1, it
.Eachrota ry ring is fashioned withan interior annular flange 18 and'each flange is prov ded with a complementary notch 19.
vided with a series of false notches 20.
The shackle 21 is of U-shape and is designed to slide into and out of engagement with the operating partsof the padlock. Its
and the bar 23 having a longitudinal groove 25 on its outer face. The head 2 is provided with circular openings 26 and 27 for these bars, the body 1 of the padlock is provided I s with I semi-circular grooves 28 and 29 for guiding the bars of the shackle, and the In addition to notch 19, each flange is prohead 3 is provided with sockets '80 and 31 I for the respective endsof the bars 22 land- 23 of the shackle when it is inserted inlocked position. s
It will be understood that the rotary rings are first brought into position with the notches 19 in alinement with each other and with the openings 26 and 30 of the respective ends. In this position the shackle may be inserted and shoved down to operative position within the padlock as shown in Fig. 2, then by turning one or more of the rings the flanges 18 of the rings are turned in the complementary notches '24; of the shackle, thus locking the shack-1e in the padlock. Thereafter, to restore the rings to position for alini'ng their notches 19 in order to withdraw the shackle, the co1nbination indicated on the exterior of the padlock is resorted to, and when thus alined the shackle may be withdrawn. 7
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure byaU-sliaped shackle for co-action with said rings having transverse notches in one bar anda longitudinal groove in its other bar.
In testimonywhereof I afiix my signature.
ALEXANDER CHISHOLM.
