Patented 'f Dec. 6, 1927.
i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER M. SCHWARTZ, or PHILADELrHiA, PENNSYLVANIA, AssieNoR To rnocron TION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
PANEL.
Appiicatimi andl Mays, 192e. seriai No. 107,675.Y
My invention rela-tes to certain improvements in metal panels, preferably ot the typer material between the havinO' non-conducting b t1 I Panels ot this type inner and outer Walls'.
are used in drying apparatus for prevent-ing heat trom radiating through the Walls ot One object o this invention is to provide a panel with a recess at the edge for thereception ot a non-conducting strip of material, preferably cork.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the panels that when the panels' are assembled, the, cork insert ot" one panel will be in contact with the insert ot lan ad A I liied panel ot a drying machine, While the ,other panel l is arremovable panel detach' joining panel. n
lii` the accompanying drawings:
panel;
Fig. 3' is a sectional vieiv of a panel in Which the iiaiive is orinedby bending one' ot' the plates ot the panel; f
Fig. l is 'a sectional perspective vieilv or the panel shoivn in Fig 2; 1
Fig. is a sectional perspective. view show- I plates 2 and v3). The plate Q is a flat sheet, ivhile the plate 3 is bent atright angles to form a ivall 4l and is bent at 5 parallel With the plate 2, the portions 5 beingk spotfwelded to the'plate 2. The depth ot the angular wall 4f determines the thickness ot' the panel. The space between the two plates 2 and 3 is lilled with any suitable heat non-conducting material (5. such Yt'oi' instance as asbestos.
A channel 7 is tornied at the edges oit the panel either by welding or. otherwise 'securing a light angle strip 8 to the plate 2,
as iii Fig. 2, or bending the edges ot' the' plate 2 to/.toim a flange 8, Fig. 3.
The first-mentioned construction 'is preterablyused on a removable panel, and theV other construction is used on a tixedpanei as infFig. 5, but either forni may be adopted as desired. y. Y
Fig. l is a tace view ot niy improved Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 9.-2, Fig. l;
method is a vieiv showing the arrangement ln the `channel Jornied by the flanges is located a stripv ot non-conducting material 9. suchas corlr. 'The corkfis cut to size and is t'oi'ced into the recess, the surface 'of the Vcork extending above the 'Flange so that there will be no metallic contact of one panel vvithV l anotheror with a structural support. Y
The panels 'are so arrangedtliat there is a clearspace 0 `between the edges of the panels as in Fig. 5.
.By the above construction a comparatively small amount of heat is conducted from' the inner plate ot a drier to the outer plate.
ln Fig. 5 is a view showing tivo panels arranged side by side, one panel l@ being a ably secured to the fixed panel by any suitable'clainp 10. .A
Fig. 6 illustrates one arrangement by ivhichthe panels are secured to the structui'allangle bars ot a drier; and Fig. 7 isa vieiv showing how the corners are termed.'
rllhe cork inserts rest uponjtlie surface of a small angle iron ll which is located a. short distance beyond the main, corner angle iron 1Q. Glaiiipingbolts are used suchas shown in Fig. 6. l f
l claims 'f n l. The combination in a panel, ot tvvo plates spaced apart forming` the trent andr the bach o't the panel, one ot said plates being bent lat. an angle at the edge andsecured to the other plate; a channel beyond the edge ot the bent panel; and an insert off,nonfconducting material located in the channel, the bearing tace of the insert-niaterial being parallel with the surface oic the Y panel.
The combination in a panel, of tivo platesspaced apart; non-conductingmaterial Yin the space betiveenthe plates, one of said plates beingl bent at an 4angle at its 'tour edges. the end of said bent panel extending parallel with the ,other plate and secured thereto; a wide channel torined'oii all sides ot saidpaiiel; and an insert oticork or other non-conducting inaterial in the flange beyond the edge ot the bent panel, the beaiing suri"ace ot the insert being yparallel with the body of the panel.
