Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'-
WILLIAM A. ALBAUGH AND JOHN TOOLE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. A
IMPRovEME'NT |N BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,195, dated July 6, 1875; application tiled April 3, 1875.
1 To all whom -it may concern: v
Be it known that we, WILLiAM A. ALBAUGH and JOHN TOOLE, of Baltimore, in the county ot'Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented an Improved WhitewashBrush; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part ot' this specification- Figure 1 being a top view ot' the improved brush-block, the bristles being cut ol't' close thereto; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section -ot' the same; Fig. 3, a section similar to that in Fig. 2, but showing the improvement as applied to a brush made with a leather band and nails or tacksv to secure the outerbristles instead ot' twine or thread, as in Figs. l and2.- Fig. 4 is a transverseV vertical section ot' a brush-block, showingv a modification ot' the improvemen l Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the iigures.
Inl the drawings, A represents the brushbloek, and B the bristles secured thereto.
The nature ot' our invention consists in the employment ot' strips of wood or other suitable material applied to the sides of the blockclose to the corners of the edge where `the bristles are attached, for the purpose of spreading the outside bristles, and of aording a means of more tightly and securely fastening these bristles to the block, substantially as herein specified.
As a modification ot the improvement, in-4 stead of the separate applied strips, as above set forth, we may have ledges or ridges on the corresponding parts ofthe block raised above the general surface of the sides thereof in shaping the block itself.
The brush-block A is made as usual, an the strips a, a, which constitute our improvement, are tacked, tied, or otherwisegattached to the block, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. .'lhen, whether the outer bristles are secured by twine or thread b b, as shown in Fig. 2, or by a leather band, c, and `nails d d, the strips a a assist in holding the bristles to the block,
eral surface ot' the sides ofthe block, the outer bristles are well flared outward, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, thereby keeping the brush in good shape, and preventing the iiattening down Aotl the bristles into a thin mass in use. Thus we make a very superior brush, and that with-` out adding materially to the cost of manufacture.
The modification shown in Fig'. 4 whereby the raised form is produced on the sides ofthe brush by making the raised ledges a a integral with the block, instead of separate strips, as in the other figures, produces the same result, with. a difference only in the method ot' construction, the ridges raised above. the general'surfa-ce and having the edges f f 'abrupt in contradistinction to a conical or tapering or inclined formbeing the essential feature.
lhis improvement is applicable4 to whitewash-brushes especially, but may be applied to other brushes of like construction.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
Awhitewa'sh-brush constructed with abrupt edged strips or ledges a aI raised above the general surface ot' the sides ot' the brush-block A, substantially as and for the purposes herein. specitied. Y
Specification signed by us this 31st day of March, 1875.
