Description
Patented Nov. 29, 1927.
TATES ISIDOR DINSTMAN, OF NEVT YORK, N. Y.
WATGHCASE.
Application filed May 4, 1925.
This invention relates to a watch case which very eiifectively excludes the entrance of dust therein and at the same time the works holder can be conveniently held in the cases without interfering with the proper operation of the time keeping mechanism. By this invention a watch case of attractive appearance and convenient Operation is provided in which a resilient back cover may be snapped in place and ti htly held so as to exclude dust and moisture. At the same time the ring for holding the works is mounted in the case in such a manner that the works are securely held and the ring itself does not interfere with the mechanism.
The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. l is a plan view of the watch case;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough;
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the ring;
Fig. 4 is an edge View of the ring; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section showing one of the details.
In the drawings, reference character 1 indicates a watch case that is provided on the front face with a groove or seat 2 for the crystal. The other or backface of the case is open as shown at 8. A cover 4 is provided to be snapped in place over the lower edge 3. The cover 4 is provided with a resilient flange 5 which is somewhat fanshaped in cross section as more clearly shown in Fig. 5 and is adapted to be snapped over the sloping recess 6 so that it will be firmly and securely held in position thus excluding the entrance of moisture or dust into the inside of the case itself. The back cover a may be detachable or it may be hinged to one side of the case as indicated at 7 in Fig. 2. The case may be made of any convenient number of sides, a case of eight sides being shown in the present illustration. Projections 10 may be provided on opposite sides of the case between which projections the pins 11 extend for the purpose. of serving as a ribbon or leather strap holder in case the watch is to be used as a wrist watch.
Serial No. 27,821.
The back cover 4 extends slightly beyond the rim 5 so as to leave a space between the edge 3 and the back cover 4. A ring or holder 14 is provided for the works. The outside perimeter of this ring or works holder corresponds in shape to the inside of the case 1 and its interior or medial portion is provided with an opening suitable in shape for containing the works themselves. This works holder 14L is provided with an external ledge or shoulder 16 along one edge which rests, when the works holder is inserted in the case, upon the edge 3 of the case 1 between this edge and the back cover 4. The works holder may be made of'thin metal as indicated at so that the space between the outside perimeter thereof and the inside opening for the works themselves may be hollow in order to make the works holder very light. An inside ledge or shoulder 17 is provided at the edge of the inside opening in the works holder against which ledge or shoulder the works rest: A notch 18 through which the stem 12 passes is also provided in the ring or works holder 14..
The watch may be assembled by placing the work in the works holder to a sufficient distance so that the works rest upon the ledge or shoulder 17. The works holder or ring 14: carrying the works is then inserted into the case sufliciently far for the ledge or shoulder 16 to rest upon the edge 3 of the case 1. In this position the dial may rest upon the face or upper edge 19 of the works holder and the hands will be free to revolve in the space between the dial and the crystal in the groove 2. The ring 4 is then snapped into place so that its rim 5 is securely held in the dove-tail shaped groove 6 around the edge of the case 1. The stem 12 may then be passed through a hole in the side of the case and through the slot 18 and attached in the usual manner to the works.
I claim:
1. In a watch, a case having a seat for a crystal on one side, the other side being 9 open and a works holder having a shoulder fitting against the edge of the open side said works holder having an outside peripheral Nov. 29,, 1927. 1,651,201
