a. Thisinvent on relates to paper perforating devices and particularly to devlces for perforating letters, bills, documents, and any ingand formin loose sheets printed or. written or the like, ready for filing.
The main ob ect of the invention is to provide an improved device for forming two or more perforations in sheets of paper or the like, and another object is to provide improved means for positioning the sheets to be perforated The means I prefer to employ for accomplishing the above-named objects, together. with other novel and advantageous features a modification, and

As illustrated in the drawings, my improved paper perforating device embodies aase portion indicated by the numeral 1, and which base portion is wider at the rear than at the front and has a Quality of upright portions 2 at the rear, in this instance two,

The punches 4 are pivotally connected to the lever branches 7 by pins 13, and there are spring pockets 14 and 15 in the upright portions 2 and' the lever branches. 7 .respec- A tively, and there are springs 16 held in said pockets and coiled around the punches to normally hold the lever 6 and punches 4 in their retracted position. The upper ends of the punches 4 preferably bear against the upper faces of the pockets 15 so that eat force may be exerted on the lever (twitout springing or breaking the pins 13.
It is very advantageous to provide special means to position the sheets of the same are being perforate and the means I prefer to emplo for. this purpose are illustrated particular y in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings.
The base portion of the device is provided with a channel or groove 18, and in said groove is a gage bar 19, preferably with a gaging portion 20, and it may also be notched on the side edges as at 21. In order to hold of the said bar, and in this form of the invenaper .when
tion the die plate 5 extendsforward far enough to cover the groove 18and a portion of the gage bar 19 therein. A screw such as 23 may be placed in the forward part of the plate 5 and by'meansof said screw the plate can be brought to bear on the gage bar to different degrees so that said bar is held by friction of the several parts after it has as the plate 5 which forms the" ity of branches 7, in this'insta-nce two in number, to corres 0nd with the number of punches 4, and t ere is a knob 8 onrthe been moved to any desired position alon saidgroove. There is a trigger 24-pivot on a boss 25 on the side of the rtion l 1, and thereis a-detent portion of said trigger which is preferably pointed so as to engage with the notches 21 when pressed toward the same by means of the spring 26. If it is desired to perforate standard size sheets, thenotches and detent may be used. The operation of using the above-described gage bar for gaging or positioning the paper to be perforate is-to set the gaging portion 20 by pushing'it' to the proper position, and a then to locate the sheets of paper by placing them with their right hand edges against the said gaging portion 20. The knob 8 is then pressed down and the perforating of the sheets is effected. When the spring pressed trigger 24 is used, it automatically moves into the proper notch when the same is moved opposite to it on moving the bar 19.
Figs. Land 5 illustrate a modified form of gage bar and the holding means therefor. In this construction the gage bar 19 is beveled at 28 on each side throughout its length and is held in position by the front edge of the plate 5 and the rear edge of the bar 29 which'are beveled to conform to the edges 28. Screws 30 are provided to secure the bar or strip 29 in place and to vary the friction of the same on the adjacent edge of the gage bar 19 so that said bar can slide with greater or less facility as desired. A spring plunger 31 is provided which is adapted to engage with the notches 21 in the side edges of the gage bar 19. a
Tn the form of the gage bar shown in Fig. 6, two springs 32 are provided to secure sufiicient friction on the gage bar 19 but otherwise the construction is similar to that in Figs. 4: and 5 except that the bar 29 and the spring plunger 31 are omitted and the channel 18 for the gage bar 19 is arranged to allow some play or looseness and the necessary resistance to hold it in its set positions is obtained from the said springs 32.
Fig. 7 illustrates another mode of giving frictional resistance to the gage bar. Tn this form the gage bar 19 is curved downwardly as at 19 and the depth of the channel 18 is such that the plate 5 when secured in place exerts pressure on the bar 19 to slightly compress the portion 19 thus giving a stated amount of friction to retain said bar in the desired positions. The bar may also be curved at the parts 19 and 19 to give more working length to the bar 19 with the same frictional effect.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a paper perforating device having a base embodying a plurality of upright portions, each having a piv- 0t fulcrum, a vertical punch bearing and a sprlng pocket, of a lever having a plurality of branches, and a knob in the portion connecting such branches, a plurality of pivots one on each lever branch for pivoting the same on said upright portions of the base which pivots are less in diameter than the fulcrums and movable laterally therein, a plurality of punches, one for each of said bearings, a plurality of transverse pins joining the punches to the lever branches, and a plurality of springs, one in each of said spring pockets bearing against said transverse pins, for retracting the lever and punches.
2. The combination with apaper perforatnewbie lever is oscillated on the same,'of a lever fulcrumed by means of said fulcrum and having endwise movement at the fulcrumend when oscillated, a lever pivot secured to the part of the lever next the fulcrum and movable laterally in said fulcrum when the lever is oscillated and with the lever in its. endwise movement, a punch jointed to the lever and movable vertically only by the same, and a die secured to the base portion under the punch .andcooperating with said punch.
3. In a paper perforating device, the comloination with a base portion provided with a transverse groove, of a vertically movable punch, a die plate having a perforation in line with and cooperating with the punch and a portion extending over said groove and secured to the base portion at one side only of said groove, and a gage member slidable in said groove and normally held in position therein by the inherent resiliency of said die plate.
4. The combination with a paper perforating device having a base, of a lever pivoted thereon which has endwise movement when oscillated, punches movable vertically only and jointed. to said lever, a die plate under and alined to the punches and secured to the base, and means for positioningthe paper to be perforated which include a gage bar slidable under the paper having a gage portion at one end and spacing means including elements spaced along its length and a member secured to the base of the device to cooperate with said elements.
5. The combination with a paper perforating device having a base portion, of means for positioning the paper to be perforated which embody a gage bar slidable in a channel in said base portion, and means to slidably hold the gage bar in said channel which embody a plate over the channel and means to hold said plate which include a screw at one side, to cause pressure of the same on said gage bar to different degrees.
6. The combination with a paper perforating device having a base portion, of
means for positioning the paper to be perforated which include a gage bar slidable under the paper and having a gage portion at one end and notches spaced along its length, and a trigger pivoted on the base portion and having a detent portion adapted to engage with saidnotches.
7. The combination with a base member having two upright portions each provided with a pivot fulcrum and an overhanging portion having a vertical punch bearing, and a die plate secured to said base member and having two perforations respectively under said overhanging portions and alined to said punch bearings, of a two branched lever,two punches one for each lever branch and movable vertically only in said punch bearings, two pins whereby the punches are connected to the respective lever branches, and two pivot pins one for each lever branch for pivoting the lever on said upright portions, smaller in diameter than said pivot fulcrum to permit lateral movement of the pins when the lever is oscillated and endwise movement of the lever.
8. The combination with a base having two upright portions each having a pivot fulcrum and an overhanging portion provided with a vertical punch bearing, of two punches movable vertically only in said punch bearings, a die plate secured to the base and having two perforations respectively under and registering with said punches, a lever having two branches each jointed to a punch by a pin and each branch having an additional surface over the punch for operating the latter, and two pivot pins whereby the lever branches are pivoted in the fulcrums in the rear of the punches and which pins have a lateral movement in conjunction with end-wise movement of the lever when the same is oscillated.
9. The combination with a paper perforating device provided with a base portion having a lever fulcrum which permits lateral movement of the lever pivot axis when the lever is oscillated on the same, of a lever fulcrumed by means of said fulcrum and having endwise movement at the fulcrum end when oscillated, a lever pivot secured to the part of the lever next the fulcrum and movable laterally of the fulcrum when the lever is oscillated and with the lever in its endwise movement, a punch connected to the lever by a joint pin and movable vertically only by the same by means of the joint pin and an additional surface on the lever over the punch, and a die secured to the base portion under the punch and cooperative with the latter.
10. A paper perfora ting device comprising a base having a pluralityof upright portions, a vertical punch bearing in each of said uprights, a plurality of punches, one
slidable in each of said bearings, a lever having a plurality of branches, a pivot joining each of said branches to each of said up- I rights, whereby the lever may be oscillated, and a pivot pin joining each of said punches to each of the branches of said lever, said lever branches each having a cam surface contacting with the upper end of each of said punches, whereby a downward punching force exerted on said lever is transmitted to each of said punches through its respective cam surface and pivot pin.

The combination with a paper perforating device having a base provided with a plurality of upright portions each having a punch bearing, of a plurality of punches, one slidable in each of said bearings, said upright portions each having a pivot fulcrum, a lever having a plurality of branches each connected to one of said punches, and a plurality of fulcrum pins, one connecting each of said lever branches to one of said upright portions, said fulcrum pins being of less diameter than said fulcrums and transversely movable therein, whereby said lever,
when oscillated, is capable of endwise move-' ment transverse to the axis of said punches.
12. The combination with a paper perforating device having a base provided with a plurality of upright portions each having a punch bearing, of a plurality of punches, one slidable in each of said bearings, said uprightportions each having a pivot fulcrum, a lever having a plurality of branches each connected to one of said punches, each of said branches having a cam surface contacting with the upper end of one of said punches, and a plurality of fulcrum pins, one connecting each of said lever branches to one of said upright portions, said fulcrum pins being of less diameter than said fulcrums and transversely movable therein, whereby said lever, when oscillated, is capable of endwise movement transverse to the axis of said punches.
