This' invention relates to reciprocating punching tools, and more particularly to machines of the type known as nibblers,
although I contemplate the use of my improvements in any field for which they are adapted by their nature. The object of the invention isto provide a machine of the above type with a device in the nature of a latch or coupler serving to control the range of movement of the tool-carrier relatively to the work-support. Provision is made for manual operation of the coupler so that it can be withdrawn when it is desired to raise the tool completely from the work to permit the work'to be cleared, for observation, or
to be shifted on the work-support so that operation can be started at a different region of the work.
Provision is also made for adjustment ofthe tool-carrier relatively to its actuating devices, and for a more extended clearance of the tool to permit such an operation as the re-adjustment or sharpening of the tool, or
its removal and replacement, or the substitution of another tool therefor, 01' any other necessary or desirable operation requiring a more extensive movement ofthe tool relatively to the work-support than is involved inthe conventional punching operation.

Figure 1 is a side view, partly in-verticaI' section, of a nibbler or punching machine in'the construction of which the invention has been embodied. The tool carrier 8- reciprocates in a vertical bore 11 of the head 1 and derives its movements from a sl1aft-12, bymeans of a crank 13 which acts. upon a slide 1d working in an enlarged upper continuation'lfi'of the bore -11, and this slide is connected with the toolcarrier 8 by a rod 16, the lower end 17 of the latter being screwed into a socket 18 of the tool-carrier, while the upper part 16 passes upwardly through a central bore 19 of the slide 14;, to which it is connected against relative rotation by adetent 20 having a nose 21 takinginto a groove 22 formed on the under surface of a handle 23 pinned to the rod 16 at 24. By turning the handle 23 the rod 16 and its screw-threaded part 17 are turned'to lengthen or shorten the reach of the tool-carrier 8 and its tool 5.
The connection and the slide 1i is completed by a latch or coupler 25 having a body-portion'which is in plan view, in Figures 3 and 4:, with legs 27 preferably bevelled at 28', as shown in Figure 2,for engagement sliding, y with the undercut ways 29 formed in the lower "end of the slide 14, and having a crotch 31, with shoulders 32 adapted to fit snugly over a shoulder 33 formed on the rod 16, for apurpose now to be described in accordance with this invention.

In accordhowever, the latch 25 may be readily withdrawn to the position shown in Fig. 4, which clears the shoulders 32 from the path of the shoulder 33 on the rod- 16, so that then, by grasping the handle 23, the operator can ralse the rod 16, toolcarrier 8 and tool 5, to clear the pilot 7 from the work. This upward movement of the rod 16 would soon be checked by engagement of the collar 33 with the under surface of recess 36 in the under surface of the slide 14, to permit longer relative movement between the rod 16 and slide 14,'so that the work can be exposed sufficiently for observa. tion, and can be shifted on the work-support for the purpose of starting operation at a different region of the work.
The tool? can also be withdrawn further for observation and repairer replacement, by rotation of the handle 23, so that the threaded portion 17 of the rod 16 is turned within the threaded socket 18 of the toolcarrier 8 until the tool is clear not only of the work, but also clear of the foot or guide 37.- Thelatter is mounted on asliding post 38 adjusted by a screw 39 and held by a clamp 40.
In order to resume the nibbling operation, it is only necessary to set the rod 16 at its lower position while the slide 14 is held in a relatively high position by the crank 13, so that the shoulders 32 can' readily enter between the shoulder 33 on rod 16 and the bottom of slide 14, when the coupler 25 is (pushed inward, after which the slide 14 an tool-carrier 8 will. be reciprocated by the crank 13, being coupled together firmly by the latch 26 as shown in Fig. 1, hereinbefore Having thus described my invention, I claim: 4
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame provided with a work support, of a slide having two parts movable relatively to each other, a. toolcarrier connected-with one of said slide parts for operation thereby, means to reciprocate said slide, and means connecting said slide parts, said means being adapted to efi'ect add ustinent between said slide parts, and also arranged to permit relative axial play theretween at times, and a manually operable coillilphng device-to prevent said play at the w of the operator.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame provided with a support, -a tool-carrier, a slide and nectingsaid-slide and tool carrier with a rtaln amount of play therebetween, and means to take up. said play at the will of the operator, said means comprising ashoulor on said rod and a coupling device supthat I prefer to provide a tool-carrier and exten means to take up said play at the will of the operator, said means comprising a shoulder on said rod and a coupling device supported by said slide in position to be introduced between said slide and said shoulder, said tool-carrier and slide having means to permit relative axial adjustment therebetween by rotation of said rod independently of its co-operation with said coupling device.
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame provided with a work-support, means to reciprocate said slide, of a rod connecting said slide and tool-carrier with a certain amount pf play therebetween, and means to prevent said play at the'will of the operator, comprising a latch su ported in ways on the bottom of said sli e in position to coupling engagement with said ro movable play. 4

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame provided with a work-support, a tool-carrier, a slide and means to reciprocate said slide, of a rod connecting said slide and tool-carrier with a certain amount of pla therebetween and means to prevent said p ay at the will of the operator, comprising a U-shaped latch su ported in ways on the bottom of said slj e in position to embrace said rod, and movable transversely into and out of coupling engagement therewith.
.6; In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame provided with a Work-support and having a head rovided with a slideway, aslide and a too mounted to reciprocate co-axially in said slide and. tool-carrier, a rod connecting said slide and tool-carrier with an allowance for axial play therebetween, and a couplingevice mounted on said slide and having a handle, extending out through an aperture in said head, by which said coupling device may be moved transversel of said head into coupling engagement with said rod, to prevent said play between said slide and toolcarrier; said rod bein screwed into said ing freely upward therefrom through said slide, presenting abovesaid head a portion operable manually to rotate said-rod, whereby into said tool-carrier more or les, to vary the relative axial positions of said slide and tool-carrier, and means to control-rotation of said rod.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame provided with a work-support and having a head provided with a slideway, a slide having two parts movable together in said slideway' and d head, by which said adapted for adjustment relatively to each other, and a tool-carrier mounted on one of said parts to reciprocate therewith in said slideway, a member connecting said slide parts with anallowance for axialplay therebetween, and a coupling device mounted on said slide and having a handle, extending out through an aperture in said coupling device may be moved transversely of said head into coupling enga ement with said slide to Erevent said play etween the parts ofsaid S de, said connectin member being connected with one of said slide parts and extended freely therefrom through the other part of said slide, presenting beyond the latter a portion operable manually to vary the relative axial positions of said slide and tool. carrier.
