Application led October 3, 1925. Serial No."60,220.
The object of the invention is to providel improvements in writing instruments and particularly in that type commonly known as magazine encils.
Another o ject is to provide` an instrusembly; and Fig.'4 is a diametrical view of certain of the elements shown in Fig. 8 also in ali ment.
I e erring 'to Fig. 1 of the drawings, a writlng mstrument'is shown as comprislng a ment of this character, wherein the reservoir\central reservoir portion 1., terminating upof a fountain pen is adapte-d to be filled with fluid by means of a plunger, and the mechanical -details of the pencil are located within the hollow shaft that actuates said l plunger.
A further object is to provide an impro-ved instrument, whereby the former is free to rotate with respect to the latter, and upon y necessity can be removed from said body portion, when assembled there being no external evidence of the manner in which the union l is maintained.
Still another object is to provide a construction which permits the insertion of a. fresh length of lead within the end portion of a holder, while the latter is in extended position in one direction, and upon rotating the terminal operating member until the holder reaches its other extreme position a j slender rod extending centrally through the said shaft serves to loosen any portion of the lead still gripped by said holder, so that the lead may be dropped from the instrument solely by gravity when turned into vertical position.
And a still further object is to provide all of these features and others in combination with a unique cap for the instrument, which is adapted to contain a large number of renewal leads of the same or different colors from the one which at any time may be located operatively within the'instrument.
With these and other objects in mind, the invention comprises further objects and advantages fully brought out in the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side view of a writing instrument comprising one embodiment of the invention, with the magazine cap shown partly in section and thereby exposing to view the fountain pen portion of the instrument; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of the instrument, showing the pencil portion of the mechanism in diametrical section; Fig. 3 is a group figure showing the several parts of the said mechanism in elevation and I in alignment for operative aswardly in the fountain pen portion 2 of the mstrumen't, described in a .co-'pending application, and normally covered by a magazine cap also described in a separate co-pen'ding application, and containing reserve leads within a cylindrical compartment '4, besides terminating in an eraser 5. The lower end portion of this instrument comprises a magazine pencil section 6, from which the exposed end of a writing lead 7 is shown protruding. As described in the. co-pending-application above referred to with respect to the fountain pen, the fluid for the reservoir is forced thereinto by means of a plunger 8, surround- .ed by a gasket 9 which slidably engages the inner surface of the walls of the said reservoir 1, while said plunger is provided with an axial threaded bore 10 adapted to receive the correspondingly threadedhead 11 of a member shown in Fig. 3. The head of this last-named member terminates in one direction in an enlargement 12 which serves to prevent .the head from passing entirely through the bore 10 of the plunger, while the opposite -end of this head is provided with an axially extending rod 13.
Referring now to Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive. the lower end of the reservoir 1 is spanned by a closure 14 secured into the end thereof,
and terminating downwardly in a reduced threaded portion 15, which receives in normally'xed relation a member 16, which is provided with an axial bore 1.7 in alignment with the corresponding bore 18 of the closure 14. The lower end portion of the member 16 is also reduced at 19 and provided with a circumferential groove 20. in which is positioned, yet but partially embedded, a
radially resilient ring 21.
The terminal member 6 comprises any external configuration thatmay be desired for the sake of utility and convenience, but internally is provided with a bore 22 adapted 'toslidably receive the reduced portion 19 of the member 16, and with a groove 23 which normally slidably receives one-half of the cross-section of the ring 21, whereby the member 6 is free to rotate upon the member 16. vDownwardly the bore 22 opens into a narrower bore 24 into which is secured in any suitable manner the knurled end portion 25 of a cylindrical member 26 the up er portion of which latter is provided wit spiral grooves 27, which create spiral ridges u on the interior of said last-named mem er.-
The bore 24 opens downwardly into a restricted bore 28 through which the lead 7 is free to slide and to project when the instrument is employed for writing as a pencil.
Within the member 26 is a further cylindrical member 29, which is provided with spiral ooves 30 preferably throughout its entire ength, except for its lower end portion 31, which latter is restricted and is rovided with an inwardly taperin bore w ich normall receives the-inner en portion of the lea 7. The ooves 30 cooperate with and engage the ri ges caused by the grooves 27 in the member 26, so that when the member 6 is rotated, and the member 26 is thereby likewise rotated, the member 29 is caused to reciprocate through said member 26, since it too cannot rotate, bein rovided with a lug 32 which is slidable wlthin the lon 'tudinal key-way or slot 33 of a c lindrica member 34, supported fixedly wit in the member 16 and surrounding the member 26, the upper end of the member 34 being reduced at 35 vand secured within the recessed portion of the head 11, so that the rod 13 extends therethrough and in reciprocatory relation with the member 29, though longltudinally fixed with respect to the members 26 and 34.
In the operation of the device as illust-rated and as above described, the vari-v ous parts are assembled. as shown in Fig. 2, and the member 6 is rotated so that the member 29 approaches the lower end of the instrument when held as shown in Figs. 1 and 2). ne end of a lead 7 is then inserted through the bore 28 and into the tapered bore of the lower portion 31 of the member 29, so that the lead is thereb gripped and operatively securedwith eac application of the pencil to the writing materlal. 'The member 6 is then rotated in the opposite direction until the member 29, carrying the lead with it, rises within the member 26, and the lead is exposed only the desired distance as shown '1n Fig. 1. Thereafter, as the lead wears away, the member 6 is rotated so as to reciprocate the member 29 and bring a greater portion of the fresh lead into ex osed position and available for writing. cwever if while using a lead of a given color, it 1s desired to change to a lead of a diierent color, the member 6 is rotated so as to cause the member 29 to retreat to its farthest inward osition, where the rod 1 3, extending lthrong the member 29 comes into contact with the remaining piece of lead and loosens the same from its normal position wedged within the member 31. The lead is l then free to drop by gravity from thein- A writing instrument comprising a pen" having a reservoir, a suction plunger there- 1n, a closure for one end of the reservoir, a
hollow shaft extending from one end of the plunger and below sald closure and slidablc through the-latter,l an actuating member on said shaft detachably connected to said closure, an actuating member carried by and rotatable relatively to the tirst mentioned actuating'member, a rotatable sleeve substantially within said shaft partly extending below the same and to which the second actuating member is secured, and means within and coacting with said shaft and sleeve to hold and feed lead.-
