This invention pertains topa door check particularly adapted for use' 1n connection l with automobile bodies or similar vehicles..
Heretofore varying types of checks have 6 been used originating ,with the ordinary exposed loop strap 'which would loop outvvardly from the door` when in closed position and be secured at both ends, to the surface of the door and body. Concealed checks '10 have been employed metallic member has within the frame work of the body and door so as to be entirely concealed when in closed position, as well as groove and slot checks mounted onthe top of the doorsuch types requiring shock absorbing members and being relatively expensive of manufacture and installation.
The principal object lof this invention is 2 to provide a concealed 'check which will be little,l if any more expensive dinary strap; which will have sufficientresiliency and `give to absorb the shock without provision of an additional shock absorbi'ng member, and which will assume its properposition -in the frame Work of the door or body-so as to avoid interference with the window actuating mechanism and take up a minimum of space. The particular'lfeatures of the invention will be hereinafter fully described and set forth in the accompanying specifications and claims.

In the drawings there is illustrated a portion of a vehicle body 10 having an inner wall or covering 11 supported on the angle iron post 12. Hingedlymounted thereon @in lthe usual manner through the medium of the hinge 13 there is a door 14 having an inner wall or covering 15 and the angle iron frame 16.- As herein shown the check strap isapplied to the new tvpe of metal '55 body construction, .but is equally adapted'to use in a similar manner wherein a y cable or `been slidably secured` than the or- 7 the nature thereof being such with respect-to the wooden type of body construction. Tae face cent thedoor is provided with aslot or pening 17 formed therein which abuts, when the door is in closed position, a similar slot 18 formed in the angle iron post 16.
The openings 17 and 18 are ofsuch size and shape-v as to freely accommodate the check strap. It will be noted that the .opening 18 is formed by stamping out a tongue in the metal post 16 and bending it back onA itself to form a rounded edge 19.
f The strap is formed of a double layer of fabric 20 and 21 by folding it at one end 22 and then folding the folded end over on itself to form an enlarged end member 23.
The folds are secured rigidly at both endsby the rivets 24. Intermediate the layers 20 and 21 there is mounted a iioating metallic strip 25 which is loosely positioned therein and spaced from the ends/ and sides as illustrated. Adjacent .the rnetal strip 25 and positionedv on each sidef thereof there are vulcanizing rubber strips 26 of substantially the same thickness as the metal strip 25. After the strapy has been thus formed itis coated entirely about its surface with vulcanizing rubber27 and vulcanized soas to give a smooth and finished appearance.'

The opening movement of the door is thus limited by the enlarged head 23 of the strap, as to provide a relatively soft cushioning effect while the shock is absorbed throughout the entire im' length of thehstrap aswell .as the head by reason of the yielding nature of the material xoxomo,'1Nn1ANA, AssIeNon rrocoNcEALED :boon cnncx Aof the angle iron post 12 which lies adjafrom .which it is formed. Itwill be noted that the metal strip 25 ioats the layers of the strap and'is not rigidly secured thereto. vTherefore it will in no way affect the resiliency thereof. The function of the metal strip 25 is to prevent any bucki ling of the strap, as well as retain it in proper position adjacent the wall or covering 15 of the door and out freely within los v of the way of any mechno anism contained therein. This gives the strap an added rigidity' so as to retain its proper form and position, while at the same time in no Way affecting its'resiliency.
In the vmodified form shown in Figs. 4
and 5 there is provided a single layer of fabric 121 on one surface of which the metal strip 125 is mounted, said strip being anchored thereto by the rivet 12'6 at one end and extending into a U-shaped metallic head or enlarged member 123 secured to the other end of the strap. This construction is illustrated as being applicable to cheaper and lighter types of bodies.
Whereas the check herein illustrated and described has been shown as applied to a metal body"'st1ucture, it is equally applicable to use in connection with a Wooden structure.
In a modified form shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the enlarged h'ead'isY secured by inserting 'a pin 224; Iin the folded end of the strap vso as to extend between the layers 220 and 221. The pin Will expand the layer so as toincrease the thickness of the strap at the end and' thereby secure the enlarged head 223. The entire surface of the stra-p and enlarged head may then be vulcanized so as to have a rubber covering 227.
The invention claimed is:
1. A check for limiting theopening movement of a'doorcomprising a. fabric strap, an enlarged head on one end thereof, and a metal strip mounted intermediate the ends thereof so mounted thereon as to maintain said strap normally in a straight line and prevent buckling thereof While freely per'- mitting longitudinal resiliency.
2. A check for limiting the opening movementof a door comprising a strap, an enlarged head secured to one end thereof, and
means associated With said strap for normally maintaining'it in a substantially straight line While freely permitting longitudinal re- .silieney thereof.

A check for limiting theopening movement of doorscomprising a fabric strap formed with a plurality of layers, one end thereof being folded over on itself to secure an enlarged head, and a iiexible metallic strip positioned intermediate saidlayers and extending substantially from one end of said strap to the other for normally maintaining said strap in a straight line and preventing buckling thereof, While permitting longitudinal resiliency.
