APPARATUS FOR USE WITH HOT-AIR HEATING SYSTEMS.

Application filed February 2, 1927. Serial No. 165,390.

The invention relates to apparatus for use with hot air registers in connection with house heating furnace systems.- It often happens that, due to wind direction or other cause, it is impossible to secure a proper or sufiicient flow of heated air to a particular room. The present invention is designed to provide a. simple, inexpensive means for overcoming this difiiculty, or to secure an extra amount of heat in some particular room without disturbing the register shutters in the other rooms or going to the basement and changing the regulation of the various dampers in the hot air supply pipes.

35 Briefly stated, this is accomplished by the use of a casing carrying an electric fan and having a. suitable outlet in its side through which the fan dischar es, the casing being open at the bottom an also on one side, so

29 that the casing may be either seated over a floor register or may be placed with its open side in opposition to a wall register. When the casing is in use over a floor register, the opening in its side is closed by a suitable door or shutter. In this manner the fan is made to provide a suction in the casing, and

so draw heated air from the register. Certain embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawing,

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is-a floor register with the hot air pipe 2 leading thereto, and 3 is a sheet metal casing, open at the bottom, and seated upon the floor 4. The casing is provided with a shelf 5, which supports the electric fan 6, and with an outlet opening 7 forward of the fan. A second openmg 8 is provided through the rear wall 0 the casing 1n 0 position to the fan. When the device is use over the floor register, as indicated in Fig. 1, the opening 8 1s closed by a suitable door 9, such door being. preferably ided for horizontal movement in the gui es 10. The path of the air, as it is sucked from the pipe 2 by the fan and discharged through the casing, is shown by the arrows.

When the apparatus is used with a wall register 12, as shown in Fig. 3, the door 9 over the opening 8 is removed, the bottom opening to the casing being closed by the floor 13, and the direction of the flow of air is as indicated by the arrows. Even though the rear wall of the casing does not engage the wall 14- of the room surrounding the register, the draft produced by the fan is sufficient to produce the desired result. The apparatus may in this manner he used with both types of register, which are ordinarily found in one residence, the floor registers being used on the lower floor and the wall registers on the upper floors.

Figs. 4 and 5 show a construction similar to that of Figs. 1 to 3, except as to the mounting of the fan 15. This mounting comprises a ring 16 riveted, or fastened by screws, to the casing 17 around the outlet opening, to which are secured the spider arms 18 secured at their inner ends to the casing of the fan. This mounting has certain advantages as compared with that of Figs. 1 to 3, but has to be made special and supplied with the casing, while the apparatus of Figs. 1 to 3 may be made and sold without the fan equipment, which may be supplied by the purchaser, as any ordinar house fan may be used upon the shelf. handle 19 is provided upon the top plate of the casing in both forms of apparatus for convenience in moving such apparatus from place to place.

What I claim is:

1. In combination in hot air heating apparatus, a portable casing open on the lower side and adapted to rest upon a floor and surround a hot air register, and also open its rear side, so that such opening may be laced in opposition to a wall register, a door or such last opening, and an electric fan in the casing facing away from such last 0 ening, an outlet opening being provide in tfzhe front wall of the casing in line with the 2.
