Patented Oct. 11, 1927.
UNITED STATES MILTON KAHN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EDUCATIONAL DEVICE.
Application filed December 15, 1923. Serial'No. 680,975.
This invention relates to educational devices.
Some of the objects of the present invention are: as a new article of manufacture means for the reproduction of musical or other compositions including words with a booklet or the like containing the said composition in readable from so thata person may become thoroughly familiar with such com osition by perusing said booklet; to com ine a sound record tablet or disk and a booklet of the character mentioned in such a manner that the tablet or disk in conjunction with a phonograph or the like may be played in the usual manner also allowing the perusal of the booklet, the contents of the booklet being a complete score of the words or music or both as the case may be embodied by the tablet or disk; to produce a booklet or the like containing the complete score of a sound record disk and means for efleoting the association of the booklet or the like with said sound record disk and so that the booklet or the like is detachable; to provide a phonographic sound record disk with a pocket for the reception of a booklet containing the record composition in readable form; to produce an envelope and booklet for association with a phonographic sound record disk, said booklet contalning a complete display in readable form of the matter embodied or impressed in said record disk, the envelope having alined holes therein and the booklet having a hole therethrough capable of registration with the holes in said envelope for the disposition of the record disk and the booklet and envelope in correlation about the spindle of tlie'turntable of a phonograph; and with these and other objects in view the invention resides in the use, application and functions of the parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a phonograph sound record disk and a booklet containing in readable form the complete translation of the record disk contents; the booklet being applied to the disk.
Figure 2 is a sectional view illustrating the parts shown in Figure [assembled for use in the playing of the record disk.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the envelope,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the booklet opened.
The present invention contemplates the association of an instructive booklet 10 or the like with a sound reproducing means such as a sound record disk 11, and suitable means for effectin the association such as a disk shaped enve ope 12.
The sound record disk 11 is of the usual type and therefore has a spiral record groove 13 therein as an impression for reproduction of a musical or speech composition or both; the disk being used in conjuction with a sound reproducm instrument such as a phonograph. The dis 11 has a spindlehole 14 centrally thereof.
In order that a person may be fully familiar or conversant with the matter contained by the record disk 11 there is provided the mentioned booklet 10' which contains in readable form the matter aforesaid. The booklet 10 has a hole 15 therethrough, that is tosay, a hole through the covers and pages thereof substantially equal in diameter to the hole 14.
In order that the booklet 10 may be associated with the record disk 11 there is provided the mentioned envelope 12 which in the present instance consists of twoflpieces of the same material connected to each other by virtue of the tabs 16 cut out of one piece of material and pasted to the marginal edge of the other piece of material thus providing sides 17 each of which has a hole 18 therein. The holes 18 are alined and each is substantially equal to the diameters of the holes 14 and 15. The envelope is attached to the disk 11 centrally thereof by virtue of glue or the like 19 on one of the sides 17 the holes 15 being alined with the hole 14. It will now be manifest that the booklet 10 may be readily inserted in the pocket of the envelope 12 or be removed therefrom..
1n playing a particular record disk, it is possible in accordance with the present invention, to keep a booklet with words and music of the composition recorded on the record disk so that the booklet is available for perusal in self instruction in the contents of the record disk, leading to fuller understanding of such contents. The booklet may be kept in the envelope attached to the record disk even in the playing of the latter without in any way interfering with the positioning of 'the recorddisk on the turn-table'of a phonograph about the s indie thereof by reason of the holes 15 an 18 which may be brought into alinement with 5 the hole 14 of the record disk.
While the preferred embodiment of the I invention has been shown it is to be understood that the right is reserved to make changes, alterations and modifications with- 1 in the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
What is claimed is:
A sound reproducing disk record having a pocket centrally fixed thereto, said pocket being in the nature of an envelope comprising two substantially disk shapedflpiece's l I of like material, and tabs formed on the edge of one piece and secured to the marginal edge of the other piece for securing said pieces together. 7
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my 20 signature. 1
