My invention relates to a wire grip or come-along for use by linemen in pulling wires, particularly hot wires. It has for its object the provision of a device of the above character which, while being capable of being easily and quickly positioned upon the wires, will when in its operative position, be securely held against accidental displacement.
Heretofore in the use of wire grips or come-alongs it has been customary to rely.
upon the friction between the wire and the tool to hold the same in its operatlv-e position and it frequently happens that due to the swinging of'the wire while being strung or from other causes the wire has slipped out between the jaws of the tool side ways, resulting in serious injury to the workers and it is the prime object of my invention to pro vide means for closing the side opening through Which the wire is positioned, after the wire has been positioned. The closing of the tool acting to close this side opening thereby preventing the wire from accidently coming loose.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter, and while I have shown and will describe the preferred form of my invent-ion, I wish it specifically understood that I do not limit myself to such preferred form, but that various changes and adaptations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Referring to thedrawings (Figs. 1, 2, .3, and 4:) my device. 10 in the rear end of which is provided a slot 11, extending longitudinally. The for- -ward end of body 10 tapers downwardly and forwardly at 12 and extending outwardly from one side of this tapered end is a stationary jaw 13. J aw 13 projects beyond the around stud 22 securedat its ends in links 17 comprises a body member tapered end of body 10 and pivotally mounted at one end upon one side of this projecting end by means of pivot, 14 and in alinement with the taper 12 is one end of a link 15. The other end of link 15 extends upno wardly at an angle and its upper end is pivotally mounted between the ends of links 17 and 18 by means of pivot 16. Links 17 and 18 extend downwardly and rearwardly and have their lower ends pivotally mounted upon a pintle 19passing transversely through slot 11 of body 10. A clevis 20 has its ends pivotally mounted upon pintle 19 at the outer sides of links 17 and 18. A spring 21 is coiled and 18 and has one of its ends held beneath a pin 23 projecting from the inner side of link 17. The other end of spring 21 bears against an abutment 2 1 in the side of the upper end oflink 15. A stud 25'is rig-idly mounted at one end in link 15 and pivotally mounted upon this stud 25 is a movable jaw 26 in register with the upper face of the stationary jaw 13. An arcuate slot 27 is pro vided in body 10 immediately in front of slot 11 and projecting through this slot is a stud 28 the other end of which is rigidly mounted in the inner end of jaw 26.
Rigidly mounted upon the ends of pivot 14 and stud 25 rotatable therewith are dogs 29 and 30 adapted to project across the open space between the jaws 13 and 26 when the device is positioned for use. V
Rigidly mounted in the free end of a movable jaw 25 to project from each side ,0 thereof are studs 31 and 32 the ends of which terminate in heads 33 and 34:E1I1Cl similar studs 35 and 36 are secured upon opposite ends of pintle 19.
The studs 31, 32, 35 and 36 are provided for use wit-h my come-along operating device which is being made the subject of a separate-application.
In the operation of my device the same will, first be brought to its open position (Fig. 3) by sliding pintle 19 in slot 11 towards the tapered end of body 10 causing links 17 and 18 to move the upper end or link 15 to a vertical position. This movement of link 15 will by means of slot 27 and stud 28, and stud 25 move movable jaw 26 upwardly away from jaw 13. During the movement oflink 15 dogs 29 and 30 will be rotated, relative to jaws 13 and 26 to be substantially parallel therewith. The de- 11s vice is positionedci or use by passing the wire between the jaws 13 and 26 from the open side thereof. The device is then released and the spring 21 will act to return the parts to their closed position during which the ends of the dogs 29 and 30 will be projected across the open side of the jaws thereby preventing displacement of the wire until the device is again operated to its open position.
In Figs. 5, 6, and 7 I have shown another form of a come-along equipment with my safety guards. This form comprises a. body member lO in one end of which is provided a longitudinal slot 41'. Pivot-ally mounted intermediate its ends near the front end of body 4:0 is a link 42 the upper end of which is pivotally mounted by, means of pivot l3, between the ends of links 44 and 4:5. The other ends of links l t and 15 are pivota 1y mounted upon opposite sides of body 40 upon a pintle 46 passing through slot l1. Rig-idly mounted at one, end in the lower end of link 42 is a pivot l3 which passes loosely through one end of the movable-j aw 4:7 and has rigidly secured upon its other end a dog 4L8. Pivotally connected at one end to the other end of jaw" 47 is a link 49 the other end of which is pivotally connected to body 40 by means of pintle 50. Pintle 50 is rig idly secured at one end in the end '01 link 19 so as to move therewith and has: rigidly secured upon its other end on the opposite side of body. 40 dog 51. The operation of this form is similar to the form already described.
Having, described my invention what I claim is: j
1. In a wire puller, a pair of parallel gripping jaws, a link pivoted to both of said jaws and adapted to move said jaws into gripping and releasing position, a pair of guards fixed to said links adjacent said jaws, said guards being constructed and arranged to move into operative position when said jaws are moved into gripping position.
,2. In, a wire puller, a pair of parallel gripping jaws, a link pivoted to both of 7 passing through-said jaws at right angles at the opposite ends thereof, said pins being provided wit-h heads and projecting beyond said jaws toprovide an operative connection! with a wire tensioni'ng device.
