Ships Furniture toPrevent Sea-Sickness. No. 164,240, I Patentedlune8,1875- E GRAPHIC C0.PHOTO -L|TH.39&4I PARK PLACLNLY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WERTHEIM, OF FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN, PRUSSIA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,240, dated June 8, 1 876; application filed April 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH WERTHEIM, of Frankfort-on-the-Main, in Prussia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ships Furniture for'Preventing Seasickness, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved ships chair for preventing seasickness; and Fig. 2, a top view of the socket-frame, showing the universal joint for the seat.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide for ocean vessels improved chairs and similar furniture, by the use of which the attacks of sea sickness may be avoided or diminished. The invention consists oi a chair with supportil'lg-legs, carrying a universal joint, to which the weighted stem or supporting-rod of the seat is connected, to retain the level position of the same during the movements of the vessel, the said parts being so constructed and arranged that the legs may be folded for storage.
In the drawing, A represents the supportin g-frarne of my ships chair or similar furniture, which is preferably made of legs B, spreading out to suit-able width from a socketband, C, at their upper ends. The lower ends of the supporting-legs may be capable of being fastened to the floor by screws for stationary seats, or used in the ordinary manner.
The front legs are spread out at greater distance than the hind legs, for giving greater play to the foot-board of the seat. The socket.
ring or band C carries a ball or socket joint, or a double-pivoted ring-joint, D, to which the supporting stem or pillar E of the seat F is attached, for swinging freely therein by means of the joint. The stem E is extended below the universal joint D, and weighted by weights E attached thereto, theweight being greater than the average weight of persons using the chair. The seat F is provided with a back and with a foot-board, F that is connected thereto by supporting-rods F The person seated on the chair remains, by the action of the weights, continually in horizontal position, and is therefore not liable to the attacks of seasickness, as the rolling and rocking motion of the vessel is not perceptible when seated thereon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of legs B and socket-band O with rod E, having seat F at the top, Weight E at the bottom, and intermediate ring D, all
constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH WERTHEIM.
