Reifei'ringkto these drawings it iwill he seen that the base of the devic'eflconsists ofa. sheet-"oi thin metal designated to which 21 clip llriis' atcached by rivets or other suitablemeansfthis(clip being the ordinary clip su ch espis used forholdingpaper pads upon aboard; -The frame [of thefcover or shield isiorrned of metalaand consistsflof a longitiidinelly extending strip '12 whichis angularlyhent so as to forin an inwardly project.- }ingI flange 13; lkttachedtofthis strip 12 is an inwardly projecting lug ll of sheet metal, this l g being disposed at one end of the strip 12. Attached .to thestrip-dfl and .extending upwzfrdland leterzilly are the areh supporting strips "15 which arewniade of thin sheetin'etal and which maybe corrugated to stiffen thesestrips. There are twoof ,these striped 5 disposed one at each end of the :sltrip 12L, i Y f f Extnding from one end of the strip .16 of thin SlI'BGt'TnGt-Ql which, at its-ends, extendswupwzird and outward, zisat 17,-and
' is thereizittached to a longitudinally extending 'st-rip'lS which is corrugated or folded o 'er upon its edges to render it relatively rigid. Thisstrip in turn is-attached 'hy sol 'dering. or other means 'to the st-rips 15. It wilhbe seen lthatlthe supporting brace 17 is Widerthanthe-transversestrip 16 and that thestrip .l6 is set 'in ward frOm the e1:- trenlity of the "longitudinally extending strip 12. Prefe'rzihly the inner margin of t'hestrip' 16 is ifianged at :19 end when-the tablet supportinglfplete 10 is disposed with- Zinc the shield cover, the spring clamp '11 is fengziged over-the transverse strip 16 with this edgewithin thefiange-lth w'vhileione'end of the plate; 10 is engaged between the lug 14 and theflange 13. Thus, the pad or tab- "let isfirinly si'ippo'irteclin place end theen- 'tirejmargin of Zthet'ablet 'on one side isdisf'p'osed hel ow't'he flange 13 whileone end of the 'tei'hlet disposedbelow the cross bar or v'str'ipl-l. 'Thlis',fthe leaves of the tabletere held very; firmlyngainstnny tendency to fliitterin the wind Ortoroll up.
Adapted to be disposed over the frame which has been described is a cover which preferably of leather and celluloid. This cover so formed as to support a celluloid pane or sheet entirely surrounded by the leather binding 21. it one margin the leather binding; is adapted to be disposed against the strip 12 and held in place by means of the metallic angle strip and hree or more bolts 23 having thumb nuts ii. The opposite margin of the cover beyond the celluloid ill) termed of a relatively wide. sheet oil leather The strips 15, it will be seen, extend beyond the longitudinal strip 18 and the inner taco ot' the portion 25 of the cover is termed with pockets 26 into which. the projecting ends of the strips 15 extend. The projecting ends of the strips iii are angularly bent downward and outward and thus this marginal portion is held in a downwardly and outwardly inclined position. One end of the cover is termed with a hood 9. 7 which extends down to the level of the plate 10 and extends beyond the brace 17, this extension being formed by a substantially trio ular tlap having the head 29 ot a snap iastener element mounted thereon, the brace 17 being formed with the post of such a snap fastener element. Thus, when this :[lap 28 engaged with the post, the hood 27 is held firmly in place, preventing any rain from driving: in onto the pad while, at the same time. permitting air to pass upward between this hood 2? and the plate 10. .l;'relerably the inner face ot this hood is lined with celluloid designated 31. It itbe desired to remove the cover for any reason, this is easily done by releasing the three thumb nuts or heads ill: and removing the angle iron :22. The margin of the cover may then be detached and the entire cover drawn oil of the frame alter the snap fastener members 29 and 30 have been dis engaged.
In the use of this device, as tor instance, it it he desired to take down upon the paper tablet car numbers, etc.. which work must be done in the open and under all sorts of weather conditions, the tablet; is disposed upon the sheet 10 and clamped as desired. The left arm may then support the tablet and the shield while the right arm is passed through the lateral opening in the shield for writing. The trans iarent or translucent cover gives ample light but at the same time rain or snow is lcept oil of the tablet. The device may be readily held in one hand when no writing is being done, thus leaving the other hand tree to use a lantern at night. The advantages over my original rainy day shield as illustrated in my pending application are that the present shield has a slot or channel into which the clip board 10 may be placed and which also engages the margin oi the pad or tablet and complete sup port is given to the tablet. Constructed as described, only two supporting rods or strips 15 are necessary in place of three or more as are required with my original construction. My present construction has the downwardly depending, protective portion 25 which is not present in my original con struetion and this protective portion is formed with pockets for the reception oil. the extremities of the strips or supports 15 in stead of havin the cover attached thereto by snap fasteners.
In my original (JODSbl'lltjtlOll, the hood was made ot' metal which rendered this end of the tablet shield relatii 'ely heavy. This is done away with by forming the hood of leather. ll ith this construction, the operator is protected From the rain when puttin up the sheets and it the hand. is wet, the drops will not tall on the paper under the cover. Furthermore, there a particularly good circulation of air, thereby preventing the hood or shield from becoming misty.
