BAFFLE PLATE FOR BOILER FIRE BOXES.

This invention relates to improvements 7 in boiler fire boxes and is more particularly directed to improvements in battle plate construction for boiler fire boxes.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved bafile plate con struction for boiler fire boxes which can be moved with respect to the tines of the boiler without any great effort so that easy access to the tines may be had for cleaning them.
A further object of the invention is to provide a generally improved construction of boiler fire box battle plate in the form oi a deflecting wall which completely covers the Forward, end of the tines adjacent the line sheet 01 the boiler and at the same time provides an outlet for unburned gases to be directed vertically downward through the batlle plates where it passes adjacent the bottom of the baflle plates into the flame oi fire coming up from below the batlle plates.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved pivoted battle plate for a boiler fire box which is provided with the usual arched construction that will permit the baffle plate to swing from its normal operative position to a position where the baffle plates are swung about their pivots parallel to the sides of the fire box without the necessity of removing any parts from the firebox so that easy access to the fines for cleaningcan be readily had.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved baffle plate construction which will. materially enhance the co mingling and aid-mixing of the fire box gases for the purpose of producing substantially perfect combustion in the fire box.
These and other objects are accomplished by providing a construction and an arrangement of the various parts in the manner hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention in the present instance is an improvement over my copending application Serial No. 735,099 filed August 30 1924.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view taken on a vertical plane passing through substantially the longitudinal center of the boiler fire box.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the boiler fire box taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the Fig. 3 is a detail cross sectional view taken on the lines 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective front elevational view showing the manner in which my improved pivoted bafile plates may be swung to the position in which easy access to the fines of the boilers may be readily had, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail cross sectional view showing the construction of the hinges of the baffle plates.
In connection with the efficient operation ol? a boiler it is essential at regular intervalsto clean the fiucs of the boiler and where refractory battles or deflecting walls are pern'ianently built in the fire box adjacent the fines of fire brick it is necessary in order to have access to the fines to completely knock down the fire brick and rebuild the deflecting wall on each occasion that the fines are cleaned. This method entails considerable expense in time and labor and each time it is necessary to completely extinguish the fire in the tire box in order that the brick wall may he removed from the fire box.
In the present invention I have overcome these difiiculties bv providing a construction of hinged battle plates which are pivoted adjacent the side walls of the fire box and are adapted to swing from the center toward the sides of the fire box without the necessity of entering the fire box or removing any parts therefrom so that easy access to the fines for cleaning; may be readily had and in addition thereto I have provided a construction in which passages are provided in the battle plates for conducting; the unburned combustible gases which accumulate in the top of the fire box and direct them into the flame of the fire adjacent the bottom of the bafiie plates.
In carrying out my invention I have shown the same in connection with a boiler 10 provided with the usual wall or sheet 11 and fire box as shown at 12. The fire box 12 is provided with the usual arched top or dome 13 and vertically extending side Walls l l. Secured to the front end of the sheet- 11 of the boiler 10 in a manner well known in the art is a front sheet 15. Se cured to the front end of the walls 13 and 14 of the fire box 12 and contacting with the front sheet 15 is a front forward fire box wall 16. The fire box wall 16 and the front wall 15 of the boiler are provided with a common opening 17 extending into the lire box through which the fuel is supplied to the boiler. Mounted in the rear end of the lire box 12 in a manner well known in the art is the usual flue sheet or partition wall 18. Secured in the flue sheet 18 at regular intervals are the usual lines 19 which extend into the boiler proper. Mounted in the bottom of the fire box 12 is the usual grate 20 of any well known construction. The above described boiler has been selected for the purpose of illustrating my invention, it being the conventional form of boiler now in use.
The essential feature of my invention is the provision of two improved baffle plates 21 and 22 which are pivoted on brackets 23 which are secured to the side walls 1 1 on the opposite sides of the fire box 12 by means of bolts 24. The baflle plates are preferably secured to the brackets 23 pins The baffle plates are preferably made of cast metal and are provided with vertically extending ribs 26 and horizontal. ribs 27 which are formed integrally with the baffle plates. The upper portion of each of the baille plates are curved inwardly as shown at 28 and the innermost portion, as shown at 29, is adapted to contact with the vertical portion of the flue sheet 18. The up or ends 29 of the curved portions 28 of the baffle plates are preferably curved to conform with the arch shaped top 13 of the tire box 12 and are arranged so as to form a space 30 between the curved end 29 of the baffle plate and the arch shaped top 18 of the fire box, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the baflle plates are swung to their opened or inoperative position or to the position in which access to the fines for cleaning may be readily had, there will be sufficient clearance between the top of the baffle plates and the arch shaped top 13 of the lire box to permit this swinging movement, as shown in Fig. 1. One of the baffle plates 21 is preferably provided with a laterally projecting overlapping flange 31 which is adapted to form a stop for align inn, the opposite baffle plate 22 with respect to the baflle plate 21 when they are in their normal operative position or the position shown in F 2.
Anotheressential feature of my improved baffle plate construction is the provision of passageways 32 extending vertically through the. battle plates adjacent their inner edges through which the gases which accumulate in the upper part of the fire box enter at points 3; adjacent the curved portions 28 of the baffle plates and pass vertically downwardly through exits 8st adjacent the lower end of the baffle plates. These conduits are preferably formed in the baffle plates by positioning cores in the molds when the ballle plates are being molded. By this arrangement it will be seen that when the hot coals and fuel of the fire are built up to their normal position where they reach a point relatively above the lower end of the battle plates, the baffle plates form a deflecting wall completely battling the lines from the tire box by reason of the curved portions 28 of the bal'ile plates contat-ting with the vertical portion of the flue sheet 18 and it will be further noted that all unburned combustible gases accumulat ing in the upper part of the the box will be directed through the passageway 32 in each of the baffle plates in a direction inclicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. These gases will then be discharged through the opening 34 adjacent the lower end of the baffle plates where they will come in contact with the intense heat of the fire box and be consumcd in the flame.
From the above description it will be seen that l have provided an improved baffle plate construction for a boiler fire box in which access to the lines of the boiler may be readily had by simply engaging; the inner or free ends of the battle plates and swing;- ing them about their respective pivots from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in l without the necessity of ex tinguishing the fire in the fire box.

I have provided a construction which will completely bafie the fire box from the flue regardless of the curved or domed construction of the fire boxand at the same time this particular construction permits these baffle plates to swing outwardly without interfering with or striking the top of the fire box.
iVhile in the above specification T have described one embociment which my inve v tion may assume in pra-r tice, it will of course be understood that the same is capable of modification and that modification may be made without departing from tne spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the following claims.
l Vhat T claim my invention andv desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a boiler, of a fire box therefor having arch-shaped top, a plurality of fines ext ndinp from said box through said boiler, a plurality of battle plates pivoted to the side walls of said fire box for baillinc; said fire box from said dues and means formed on the top of said ball'le plates and conforming to the a ch-slipped top of said lire box wl ereby said ballle plates may 7e swung: to a position parallel with the sides of said lire boxes.
2. ln combination with boiler, of a tire box therefor having an arclrshaped top, a plurality of flues extending from said fire box through said boiler, a plurality of bafile plates pivoted to the side walls of said fire box and extending into said arch-shaped top for baffling said fire box from said fiues and means formed on the top of said bafile plates and conforming to the arch-shaped top of said fire box whereby said baflie plates may be swung to a position parallel with the sides of said fire box.
3. In combination with a boiler, of a lire box therefor, a flue sheet forming a partition wall between said lire box and said boiler, flues extending from said flue sheet through said boiler, a balfle plate pivoted to the wall of said fire box and'spaced from said flue sheet for bathing the fire box' from said flues and a curved portion formed integral- 1y with said baffle .plate and conforming to the curvature of said arch-shaped top whereby said baffie plate may be swung unobstructively on its pivot.

In combination with a boiler, of a fire box therefor, a flue sheet forming a partition wall between said fire box and said boiler, fiues extending from said flue sheet through said boiler, and a plurality of bafile plates pivoted to the walls of said fire box and spaced from said flue sheet, each of said baflle plates having upper portions adapted to contact with said flue sheet for completely bafiling said fire box from said flues.
6. In combination with a boiler, of a fire box therefor, aflue sheet forming a partition wall between said fire box and said boiler, flues extending from said flue sheet through said boiler, and a plurality of baflle plates pivoted to the walls of said fire box and spaced from said flue sheet, each of said baflie plates having curved upper portions adapted to contact with said flue sheet for completely bafiling said fire box from said flues.
7. In combination with a boiler, of a fire box therefor, a flue sheet forming a partition wall between said fire box and said boiler, an arch-sha ed sheet forming the top of said fire box, ues extending from said flue sheet through said boiler, and a plurality of pivoted baflle plates mounted in said fire box and having curved portions extending into said arcl1shaped top in a manner whereby said bafiie plates may be swung from a position completely battling said flues to a position where easy access to said fiues'may be readily had.
8. In combination with a boiler, of a fire box therefor, a flue sheet forming a partition wall between said fire box and said. boiler, an arch-shaped sheet forming the top of said fire box, flues extending from said flue sheet through said boiler, and a plurality of battle plates pivoted to the opposite sides of said fire box and having upwardly extending portions thereof extending into said arch-shaped top, each of said baflle plates being so constructed as to completely bafiie the fire box from said boiler when in their normally closed position and to permit easy access to the lines when in their opened position.
9. In combination with a boiler, of a fire box therefor, a flue sheet forming a partition wall between said fire box and said boiler, an arch-shaped sheet forming the top of said fire box, flues extending from said flue sheet through said boiler, and two battle plates pivoted on the opposite sides of said fire box, each of said baifle plates having upper portions adapted to contact with said flue sheet and spaced from said arched top when in their normally closed position.
10. In combination with a boiler, of a fire box therefor, aflue sheet forming a partition between said fire box andsaid boiler, an arch-shaped sheet forming the top of said fire box, flues extending from said flue sheet through said boiler, pivoted baffle plates mounted in said fire box, and means formed integrally with and extending out of the plane of said bafile plates and into said arch-shaped top whereby said baflle plates may be swung from a position completely bafiiing said fire box from said boiler to a position where the baflie plates extend parallel to the sides of said fire box.
11. In combination with a boiler, of a fire box therefor, a flue sheet forming a parti' tion between said fire box and said boiler, an arch-shaped sheet forming the top of said fire box, flues extending from said flue sheet through said boiler, pivoted baffle plates mounted in said fire box, and curved upper portions formed integrally with said battle plates whereby said baffle plates may be swung from a position completely bafiling said fire box from said boiler to a position where the bafile plates extend parallel to the sides of said fire box.
12.
