RAIL JOINT.
Application led June 8, 1926.
The present invention relates to improvements in rail joints embodied in my specification, Serial No. 688,364, filed January 25th, 1924.
The improvements embodied in the present specification make the operation of the rail joint covered by prior specification absolutely safe and efficient under all conditions of operation.
1U In the prior invention, the splice bar bolts, the splice bars and the wedge formed by the angular under slope of the rail head, prevent any outward pressure of the angular cut surfaces of the joint, should these said angular cut surfaces come together, from expansion or rail creeping, thereby forcing the inner surface of the rail head out of alignment.
Expansion and contraction of the rail are due to changes of temperature; rail creep- Y ing is due in part to brakes applied in 'stopping trains, the weight of which skids along the track, carrying the rail with it.
Rail creeping can be eliminated by spiking 4the rail base flange to the ties, with spikes in tightly fitting slots in the said rail base flange, allowing every tie to exert its proportional share in checking the rail creeping force.
The present invention relates to a simpler method of counteracting the said rail creeping, and at the same time take the spreading force oif the splice bar bolts, resulting in railroads of exceptionally great mileage,
f wherein the track bolts or the splice bar bolt-s are not kept tightly secured, as is the case in railroads of short extent, on account of the greater cost of maintenance of way occasioned in the former.
40 To accomplish the desired safe conditions of operation herein enumerated, I spike the splice bar base flanges to the corresponding ties under the joint to give the said splice bars a fixed position. y
A bracket on each side of the rail web, the
three (plates) united together, takes the outline of the rail sides, i. e., the angular slope of the under part 0f the rail head, the outline of the web side, and the rail base Harige.
The said bracket also in greater part takes the outline of the end of the splice bar, against which it abuts, in case of rail expansion or rail creeping.
Inasmuch as the under head slope, the

rail web contour and the flange of the rail are not symmetrical, I make the said bracket interchangeable, so that one drop forging will do for four brackets per joint.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Fig. l represents a plan view of my improved rail joint, showing the endsk of two railroad rails, A and A1, angularly cut in surfaces a and a?, and carrying as fixed parts of the rail ends, brackets a? and a? fastened by rivets a* and t5 to the rail webs LG and a7, rail end splice bars B and B1, being secured .or clamped on either' side of the rail ends A and A1, by means of bolts b and b1 which pass through openings as and a9 inv rail webs a and a7 and b2 and b3 in splice bars B and B1, splice bar bolts carrying nuts b4 and b5 and lock washers 6G and 297. Splice bars Band B1 have openings bg and b9 for spikes or other means of fastening to ties C, C1 and C2 in a fixed position.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of my improved rail joint, showing rail ends A and A1, angularly cut surfaces a and al, brackets a2 and 0,3, fastened by rivets a4 and a5, splice bar B, bolts b and b1, nut b4 and lock washer bs, bolt openings b2 and a9, spike openings 68 and ties C, C1 and C2, to which the said splice bars B and B1 are spiked in fixed position.

The operation of my improved joint is as follbws:
The rail creeping is checked by the rail fiange brackets abutting against the ends of thesplice bars. The said splice bars are in a fixed position, the rail is free to expand SoY 2 Lef-10,985

Having thus described by invention what claim new is:
l'. in combination with a rail joint, a bracket attached to the rail vweb t0 abut against the ends of the rail joint splice bar, for the purpose described. Y
2. ln combination with a rail joint, a bracket attached to the rail Web, the said bracket forming a surface to abut against the ends of the rail joint splice bar, the said bracket being interchangeable for the purpose described.
3. ln combination with a rail joint, splice bars spiked or fastened in fixed position on ties, a rail bracket with surface for abutting against the end surface of the .said splice bars, for the purpose described.
a. iin combination, a pair oi? abutting rail ends, splice bars for joining the rail ends, an anti-creeping means located upon each of the rails at opposite ends of the splice bars and positioned to engage the splice bars, said..
anti-creeping means comprising each pair of members having portions lying against the Webs of the rails7 upper parts engaging beneath the ball of the rail and lower parts engaging the flange of the rail, and end flange portions extending at substantially right angles outwardly trom'th'e webs of the rails, and means for securing said anti-creeping means to the rails.
